Marathon training check in thread

Thanks Monica and Karebear for the welcome.

I will keep my eyes peeled for more information regarding accommodations. Thank you for the encouragement!

As for the nipple issue, my husband tells me that when a man's shirt gets sweaty, the friction and moisture combined can really irritate his nipples, thus the reason for the bandaids! Go figure!

Hi everyone, things have been really busy this week. But I still managed to get my runs in before heading off to school each day! Today, I'm home on a personal day(I had to leave early to go to a Mother's day event at my son's school and in the end decided that since I've only been out once this year, I was "cutting"!)

I ended up running 6.25 miles last Sat. and it felt great! Hopefully tomorrow will go as well. My goal is to run the whole thing in January. Unfortunately, even running I'm painfully slow.

I found the marathon ad a few months ago in both Runner's World and Running Times. It was in one in Jan,I think and then in the other the next month. They must rotate through both mags. The woman in the ad looks similar to me (if you squint really hard ;) ) so it has been a motivator.

Melanie: I think I'm going to run the Phila. Distance Run in sept. A friend mentioned she was interested, so we may rough it together. I went through the debate about disney being the first, but I like the idea of trying it out on "home territory". Plus, this is becoming less about disney and more about me, if that makes sense. I thought it was cool to run at WDW, now I just think that it's cool that I run, period.

I just came back from Kmart. They had shorts and sports bras lined with coolmax, cheap. Target also sells stuff with dri-fit ( I think that's the brand). Because of Mother's Day, a lot of the sporting goods stores have women's gear on sale. Who would have guessed I'd ask for "performance gear" for a gift!
For chafing, there's a great product called bodyglide. It helps with seams rubbing and esp. "chub-rub". I don't ever think my thighs will stop rubbing!

Take care everyone, esp. you Cheryl! I'll try to check in more frequently!

Colleen

WOW Pixiechick- 6+miles? That is impressive. Good going girly! I like what you had to say about this marathon being less about Disney and more about you. I'm hoping that at some point that is exactly the spot that I will be in. You are developing a sense of pride in yourself- and accomplishing goals you've set for yourself. that is so wonderful! Thanks for the headsup on ther clothes and the chub rub..... do they sell that by the gallon!??!??!

I did my walking early today- 30 minutes down and I feel good. Hopefully my pedometer will come in the mail really soon and I will be able to record the distances and speed I am going. I love keeing records because it shows improvement. And that helps me stick with it!

Monica- it sounds like you had a really good day yesterday. Aren't you just impressed withh yourself? YOU SHOULD BE! Keep up the GREAT work!

What are everyone's plans for the weekend?

GOOD LUCK TO THE DOYLESTOWN, PA WALKERS THIS WEEKEND!!!

Wow Colleen 6 miles you go girl:moped: I think my thighs will always rub so where do I get that stuff?

I contacted running times and the response was that Barnes & Noble carries their magazine. Mine did not:mad: So she is checking other store in my area. I really want that picture!

I did a little over 3 miles today and am looking forward to the doylestown walk tomorrow, I have to find out about rain plans. Plus I may only do 1/2 since I have a wedding to attend Saturday night, reception is at La Veranda in Philly - ohhlala. I got my nails dones today and will redo my toes tonight, still contemplating between 2 dresses, will ask dh which looks better. Mothers day will be out to brunch and then maybe a special dinner- let's hope for sunshine so we can add a walk:wave:

A shameless post here...

I am too cool. :smooth: I ran 7 miles miles this morning!!! The best/worst part was I didn't want to stop! Hopefully my legs will be okay tomorrow.

Auntmeme: I got bodyglide at Haddonfield Running co. in NJ. My magazines I get either there or at the Barnes and Noble in Deptford. Do you have any running stores near you?

Melanie: Did you ever find the title 9 website? if not... Title 9 sports

ibouncetoo: I got both "the Courage to Start" and "No Need for Speed" from Amazon. They were both a nice inspirational read.

Doylestown walkers: Have a great day tomorrow!!
And.. Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there!

Hi everyone!!

I'm back from PA.....weather held out soo nicely, and it was GREAT to meet some of my fellow WISHers!

We ended up walking 3.58 miles - there was the option of doing more, but I opted out to drive home - what should have taken me last night about 3 hrs to drive, took me almost 5 so I was anxious to get back on the road in case it was going to take me that long on the way back.

So my pedometer says I walked 13501 steps so far today....not sure if that's even close any more. This morning at the hotel it only counted 6 steps when I actually had taken 10. Go figure?! I guess I'd still prefer that it count less than what I actually do, and not more.

Last night was a rest day (except for walking a few blocks from the hotel to the restaurant and back).

Will see if I'm sore tomorrow or not.

Karen - how does this week's schedule look?

Monica- I'm glad you had such a great time. I really wish I didn't live so far away- I would've been there for sure!

I see deep increase for us next week! We actually walk 4 days and our times increase some! Woooohoooo! I guess this means there is progress for us! YEAH!!!!!

So- here's how it goes:
Sunday- REST.... Happy Mother's Day!
Monday- 15:00 minutes (this is our extra added day!)
Tuesday- 30:00 (Oh boy! walking assigned 2 days in a row.... PROGRESS!)
Wednesday- REST
Thursday- 30:00
Friday- REST
Saturday- 50 minutes... that's 10 miniutes shy of 1 hour.... I see progress... very excting! 50 minutes!!!! Watch- next Sunday I'll be saying- 50 minutes! I almost didn't make it! :p

I got my pedometer in the mail and I think I'll try it out tonight on our walk.

Auntmeme- that was nice of you to contact Running Times for us! I ahven't been to our B&N yet, but if they have them there, I'm willing to piock up a few extra if they have the ad in them... anyone interested?

Pixiechick- YOU ARE TOO COOL! I woiuld be saying a few thigns in this board if it were me doing the 7 miles! CONGRATS TO YOU!Q That is such an accomplishment! How long did that take you and how are you feeling today? Are you feeling sore or tired- 0or are you still pumped from you death defying feat?!??!?

I'd be interested in the Running Times, I am going to check out my B&N tomorrow I think...been busy with Mother's Day at the flower shop... And prom. ("I try to take one day at a time, but lately it seems several days have attacked me at once." - Ashleigh Brilliant)

I went on what will one day be my LSD run (long, slow distance), of 3 miles today. This is shorter than my regular workouts of 45 min have been taking me, but it felt good and I concentrated mainly on form. Then I went to the bar. Does this deplete the purpose of a workout? I only had one, a bloody mary, which is essentially a salad in a cup... and my first drink in over a month. I think it is safe to do!

How is everybody else's training going? Doesn't it feel good as these days get nicer?! Keep up the good work, everybody! If anybody wants the training plan I'm on, I will share it with you, just let me know on here or PM me!

Only eight months as of tomorrow!!! WOW!

I have to say PixieChick I am impressed 7 miles. I am really just starting out. So I do a little walking a little jogging. I have to learn to breath correctly. ;)
Anyway - Happy Mom's Day tp everyone.
I will be with my MOm and Grandma.

Krista

MOnica it was great to meet you in Doylestown:wave:

Karebear I would love a copy if they have the ad, I don't know of any running stores in this area to check.

Wow Pixie chick 7 miles, fabu, how long was that?

Ashley is your training schedule different? I may be interested. And I never hear of a bloodmary being a salad in a bowl:p Wish I liked them but have tried several over the years and still can't finish one, I'll stick with my cosmo.

Taking the day off, walked 3 days in a row:bounce:

Love that thinking! So...a couple of glasses of wine equals fruit cup? ::yes::

Thanks for the support everyone! I am still able to walk! My right shin is a little sore, but that is a common weakness for me. 7 miles took me a little over 1 hour 25 minutes. I am a very slow runner! But that's okay as long as I finish!

Keep up the walking and running everyone! :sunny:

Hey PixieChick -
Will you be in Disney In June? I'll be there with my husband and his mother and my parents.
Have a great time! Maybe we'll be "walking" or running right past each other. :)

Anyone have any suggestions for shin splints? They aren't too bad - I just want to make sure I continue my training.

:earsboy: :earsboy: :earboy2: :cool1:

Well- I used my pedometer for the first time yesterday- if it's right- I AM VERY SLOW! Iwalked 1.64 miles in 45 minutes... that's
2.2 mph S-L-O-W ! BUT- the good news is- I wasn't tired at all after I was done (BUT WHO WOULD BE GOING 2.2?!?!?!) and I really want to do lots more. I won't feel too bad about the time though- I just started about a month ago and I have over 100 lbs to lose. I expect once the weight starts coming down, my times and distances will get better. I really liked using the pedometer, but like I said, I don't know how accurate it is. My DH and I will go to the track at the HS tomorrow and see how accurate it is. The other GREAT thing about doing so bad ios that there's only UP to go! RIGHT?!?!?!

I'll go to B&N tomorrow and see if they have the magazines.

How was everyone's Mother's Day?

Hi Everybody!
I just got back from my weekend at Disneyland! It was HOT, nearly as hot as here in Phoenix!
But I did get to ride Tower of Terror three times! This was the official opening week there, if you didn't know.

So I put in a lot of walking the last two days. I'm going to have a nice long soak before bed tonight. I fell down in Frontier land today....stumpled over my own feet... kind of did a drop and roll and jumped right back up. A man stopped to see if I was all right and said, "I haven't seen a move like that since the movies!" And I thought....yeah, and you have NEVER seen a 200 pound 50 year old woman do it, I bet! Just got a small scrape on my elbow...didn't even get my white pants dirty. So, there is something to be said for exercise improving your flexability!

I'll do the 15 min walk tomorrow....after the last two days it will feel like a rest!

***I also would like a copy of the marathon add..though I haven't looked here yet....book store shopping scheduled for later this week***

HEY>>>>anybody going to join in WISH CHAT on Monday nights? I've been away the last couple of weeks, and with the recent time change it's 6PM for me...sometimes I'm not home from work yet....but I'm shooting for tomorrow night....hope to see some of you there.

I am feeling inspired this morning. I went to Curves this morning at 6:30 for a tour and signed up. I am going Wednesday morning for my first session. I have been in a real exercise slump and felt that I needed to try something different to get me going again. When I'm paying the $, it is an incentive to get moving.

ibouncetoo-I am glad that you weren't hurt too badly from your fall.

Keep up the great work everyone!

Hi everyone

I haven't posted in a few days, things have been hectic here with Mothers Day and Sat. we had my DD's birthday party. She is 10 today and so excited! :bounce: Where does the time go??

ibouncetoo, I'm glad you didn't hurt yourself when you fell!!! I twisted my ankle and fell last week too. It must have been the week for falls LOL. It sounds like you had a great time at Disneyland! Welcome back!

My ankle is feeling much better today but it did put a little cramp in my training. I haven't jogged on it again yet and am still a little nervous too because it is still a little sore at the end of the day after I'm on my feet alot and I don't awant to injure it worse so I'm easing back into it. I started doing Winsor Pilates last week and figure that is easy on the legs so I did the beginner workout on Fri. and Sat. Friday I also rode for 45 min. on my exercise bike (easier on the ankle than the treadmill). Sunday I did get back on the treadmill for the first time and I walked for 40 min at the 3.8mph speed, which I thought was pretty good with the ankle, it was a little stiff feeling afterwards but today feels good so I am planning on doing a "fast" walk on the treadmill again and also planning on doing Pilates today. I hope to be doing my jog/walks again by the end of the week!

I am going to try and get to Barnes & Noble today also and if I do I'll look for the magazines with the add too.

Have a good Monday everyone!!

Cheryl :sunny:

i'm still struggling a bit with this virus thing I picked up last weekend, but did make it out to start week 3 of my walk/jog program. These week I jog a totlal of 24 mins and we are still covering around 5 miles. I really dragged this morning, but only ran twice last week. I also hope to join up with the Relay for Life saturday morning and I'm telling myself I will walk/jog for two hours if I can there early enough!

i didn't have time to catch up on all the recent posts -- this is a very busy week for me ahead too. Know that I'm sending many positive vibes out there for us --

Well, I did my 15 minutes today. But, because it was a short walk, I decided to walk as quickly as I could. Unfortunately, I forgot my pedometer, but I walked around the mall faster then ever before! I felt fine, except at the end of the 15 mins. my ankle muscles bgan to hurt! So... I slowed down a little. Overall, I feel good that I did walk faster then usual- we'll see how my trainer feels about that little tidbit of info though!

I was able to find Runner's World and Running Times at Barnes and Noble's this morning. Unfortunately, Runner's World did not have the WDW marathon ad in it, so I onoy bought one, but Running Times had the ad! Unfortunately they only had 2 magazines (Had to really look to find those - they were in the way back almost completely covered by other magazines.) So- I bought both and because Auntmeme got on the phone to locate where they were sold, I'll send the extra to her. So- Auntmeme- if you want to pm me with your addy, I'll be happy to send it out to you. For the rest that asked- I will keep my eyes out for you and if I find more, I'll buy them and send them out too. Please just let me know if you have already found it for yourself!

Oh mom- I'm happy to hear that you are feeling bettre- but don't push yourself too hard. One ting I have really noticed about training schedules is taht they usually include running every other day. rarely does it have a run everyday pattern.

Cheryl- same goes for you! Are you wrapping your ankle? It will help with support. And Happy B-day to your DD! 10 is a great age!

Tammy- Congrtas on joining Curves- you'll like it! I ahve been a member before, and plan on joining again probably come summer. I loved Curves, but I wannt to be sure I'm gonna be home to use it- and from now until July I'm gonna be pretty busy. I'll join up again when I get back.

Ibounce- WELCOME HOME. we missed you! I'll bet your just tuckered out from that weekend of walking at DL- but whta a place to get tuckered out!

I'm still on antibiotics so I'm not rushing into anything, but today I went down to the track and did 2 miles. I didn't do my quickest pace because I am still not feeling 100%, but I felt good afterwards.

Days have been busy and not much time to post but I have been exercising and counting my WW pts too ::yes::

I did 4 miles Sunday and Monday each on TM and last night did Curves - hoping to get my 8 mile walk in this upcoming weekend - but it doesn't look promising at this point (time wise)

Curves has a sign posted that says a protein shake within 1 hour of excersing increases calorie burning by 20% - I am thinking that I may try one a day. Every pound gones is less that I am dragging with me on each of those miles between now and 2005!

Keep up the good work everyone - and Karebear - listen to the trainer - slowly build up ankles - we don't want you to have "more" injuries. Have you looked at any exercises that can strenghten them? (you may have said that - I have read this read but just don't remember) ;)
