Marathon training check in thread

Good morning everyone!!!

I get into 80's music, ABBA music, musicals, and Christian music.

A friend of mine said she walks to books on tape - I don't think I could do that....I would get too into the book to pay attention to the walk.

Karen - did you walk your 25min yesterday? I did 20 (after working out at Curves). 40 tomorrow!! Is it a big deal if you end up doing more?

My friend Colette and I are planning to arrive in Orlando about 1-2pm (still haven't purchased air tickets yet) on Thursday the 6th, and staying through the 12th. Staying at CBR, and while we have some things planned for ourselves, can't wait to see what is going to be planned for us WISH walkers.

I'm looking forward to meeting everyone!!

hey ;) lots going on here :)

today was my last day of week two of MF/Hers transition to running program -- my neighbor and I meet in the mornings and she has a fast stride! it's ok -- it challenges me but not overdoing it. This week we trekked close to 5 miles each day

AEG-- did you hear that comment on knee injury?? how is yours? thinking about visiting a sports med doc? don't be a hero this is what you pay for insurance for

Mel--you MUST hang with us!! are you staying at the CBR? Our group (AEG, Evansmom and myself) are arriving saturday and leaving tues. well evansmom has to leave monday even!

i have NEVER been to jellyrolls!!! count me in!!!!!!!!!!!!! sunday night of course. annieT and I are secretly meeting monday morning at the boardwalk bakery too :smooth:

i'm not committing to either walking or running until the fall. i may do a little of each

great job ladies!

Thanks for this thread everyone. I have been out of my exercise mode for a while and have walked 3 times this week on the TM although not for very long. I am ready to get back into my exercise mind set and eating healthy mind set. I know that January is going to be here before we all know it.

The comments on all the different training, shoes, etc. is inspiring. I am going to continue to come here for the inspiring stories because I have got to get myself in gear.

My family is also staying at CBR from Friday until? (we haven't decided if we want to checkout on Sunday or wait until Monday) to move to our DVC resort.

Thanks again for this great thread.

Tammy- I REALLY think you'll be too tired to leave on Sunday.... you'd better wait until Monday! :p

Mom- You walk an avergae of 5 miles those days! WOWEEEEE!!! I am so impressed. One day (hopefully soon) I'll be able to write that too- and when I do, I'll be dancin' as well! It gets my adrenaline going when I read this stuff and think that I will be doing it before I know it! Count me in on the secret trip to BW bakery on Monday am... ok? Anniet and I tried to meet up when we were there in January, but hse was celebrating her wedding... and I didn't want to interfere with that!

MIshoe- LOVE musicals! And speaking of music- yesterday I ordered 3 cd's. One is specifically a wakling cd, with music from the 60's- it has a good speed for beginner walkers., Then I ordered Elton's john's hits from like 1972- 2002, and the BeeGees greatest hits- both 2 cd sets- with music at the speed or a little faster , that I need to walk to. I'm really excited to get them! As for walking yesterday- I was as sick as a dog yesterday- but I will walk it today though. this new medication I'm taking is making me so sick, but in the long run will help control the diabetes and supposedly help with the weight loss too. Where are you gona walk tomorrow?

Tammy- I'm happy you joined us here. We're all hoping to inspire each other as we begin to seriously get ourselves prepared for this adventure. WELCOME!

I asked my coach for a recommendation of a pedometer and when she sends that info, I'll pass it along. Tommorrow I get my new tennies....uhmmm- MARATHON FOOTWEAR, I mean!

I'm so glad you all are posting to this thread. It is really pushing me along and keeping me in the right frame of mind! THANKS EVERYONE!!!

Karen, Thanks for starting this thread!

I started walking on my treadmill in Feb. and then in March I started the Couch-to-5K Running Program. Today I started week 5 of the program (but I had done an extra week in between week 3 and 4 to keep me easing into things). Today I was on the treadmill for 45minutes and 19.5 of those minutes were actully jogging! When I first started walking going 3.5 mph was hard to maintain but now that seems almost slow. Now when I do the walking parts I am walking between 3.7-4mph and am able to maintain that speed, so if you keep with it you do get stronger and more stamina to keep going longer and faster too. I am really glad I started with this so early because there are many times when I too wonder what I got myself into and will I be able to make it in time. But I am just making sure I stick with it and I keep telling myself I started training early and still have a alot of time to keep building on the progress I have already made.

The music I listen too while on the treadmill is either Christian or my DD's Disney Mania 2 CD. I have also taped to the closet that is in front of my treadmill a picture of the WDW Marathon course that I printed and a picture from a Runners World magazine from an ad for the WDW marathon for 2005. All these things help keep me motivated ;) .

I am traveling with a friend from work and her 18 year old son (they are also Disney fanatics) and we are arriving in Orlando Jan. 5 and staying until the 12th. We are staying at the CBR.

I can't wait to meet all of the rest of you WISHers!

My tip for the week is to make sure you stretch after your walking or running. I have found that has really made a difference with how I feel afterwards.

Good luck everyone with your training!

Cheryl- We use to live in Milwaukee (Brookfield) WI- we love WI.! My DH was born and raised in a little tiny farming community up by Green Bay..... and we am coming for a wedding and extended trip in July! Will you be around from the 7- 15th? I would love to meet up with you for lunch or something. The last few days I am staying at a friends house in Horicon (between Milwaukee and Madison) She owns a B&B there ( go to www.honeybeeinn.com to see it!). She's also gonna walk with us at the marathon. Let me know what you think!
I love to read how long it took people to get from one phase to the next in their marathon training. It's amazing how fast you improve! Do you know how far you're going in that amount of time? Tommorrow, I have my first long walk- only 40 minutes, but that's almost twice as long as the other walks I've had. I want to do more and more, but my trainer says to take it slow. She doesn't want to see my hip go out... and neither do I!
Can you please tell me what month of runner's magazne you got the ad from? that's a great idea- putting it up on the wall.

Please keep posting so we can see your progress!

I am posting to say that since tomorrow is the 1st of May that I am going to do my best to become so very serious with my training. I begin...:teeth:

OK Tigerlily.... today is the first day of the rest of your marathon loving life! You can do this girly! Have a good walk and let us know how it felt!

karebear- That would be great if we could meet when you come to WI in July! I'll check my work schedule for that week and see what day I am off and maybe we could meet somewhere then. I'll PM you in the next few days.
I have been logging in a notebook how long I walk/jog, how many calories and the distance and yesterday when I did my 45 min. I made it 3 miles for the first time.
I think I found the the picture ad for the WDW Marathon in the Feb. or March issue of Runners World Magazine but I can't find the magazine when I just looked for it (my house is a mess
:( ). There is a picture add in the June issue of Running Times which I just picked up. I like this picture even better and am going to hang it too. It is a picture of a woman with "Tinkerbell wings" and it looks like she is coming through the Cinderella Castle with the Carousel in the backgroud! This picture is on page 5 if you find the magazine.
Good luck with your training! Take it slow and protect your hip. You're starting early and still have alot of time to keep building on your time and distance!

Keep up the great training everyone :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Simply Mahhhrrrvelous!
I did 2 miles outdoors in about 30 minutes. (11 more to go) It was a bit humid here and we have storm threat for the day, but I went out anyway and the sun came out as I was finishing up. I did just the right amount for me as it is not a totally flat trek. I think it was just right for me because it left me feeling that I could do more.
I am going to make time for some Pilates later and now off to do the weekend cleaning dance...

Hi everyone!!! Hope everyone is doing well, and having a great day!

MD is also under the threat of storms today, so I decided to do my workout for today early (well...early in the day, not early in the morning!). I did my 1/2 hr workout at Curves, then went back home for a quick pitstop before trekking outside for a walk. Karebear1 has been sharing her trainer's schedule with me, so I walked for 40 minutes - a couple of small hills, but mostly flat. I need to find good places to walk around my house.

I must say that I feel fabulous!! I think it's so funny that it's gotten to the point that I like to exercise (never thought I would get here again).

Need to start pricing out treadmills - was going to put that off for a while and try to walk outside as much as possible, but after a sneezing spell, threat of rain, and then knowing that it's going to get so oppressive to walk outside I may not put it off that long.

For those who have treadmills-- any recommendations on brands/types?

Take care!

Monica- I'm proud of you for doing your 40 minutes. I never thought I would EVER look forward to excercising, but it gets to be that way doesn't it? I went and bought my new running shoes today. OMGosh! I have REALLY REALLY REALLY wide feet! So- to start- I had to get men's shoes... even then, they weren't really wide enough- so the guy (who was about 22-23 and cute as a button!) had to go in search of the heavy duty, extra wide shoes. Well- her brings out this pair that were just plain butt ugly! Not only were they wide, but they we all gray and charcoal gray- not something I want to wear! I was just praying that they wouldn't fit..... but they did! It was awful! I'm trying so hard to be cool and mature about this, and telling myself that as long as they feel right, that's all that's important- but it just wasn't working ! So- I get up to walk in these beasts- and HALLELUJAH! My heels slipped out of the shoe! YIPPPPEEEEE! I don't have to wear the butt ugly shoes! So- the little cute guy goes back to the back of the store and finds a much more attractive pair..... I mean a much faster pair of shoes that he brings out and they fit just right and I get them! YEAH!!! Happy ending!

Standing O for Tigerlily for taking her walk today! You rule!

Karen---

I first must apologize to you for having a laugh reading about your shoe outing. I am VERY glad though that you didn't have to end up with the ugly shoes.:)

And....

What's next on the training schedule? Do I take tomorrow off?
I'm going to try to walk at least 40 min again tomorrow.

I'm worried - I'm supposed to do a leisurely 6.2 mile walk 1 week from now (the walk in Doylestown PA), and don't know if I can do it!

MONICA!!! I can't believe that you would laugh at may PAIN!!! :p

Well, I'm glad you asked about next week schedule because I checked earlier today and there was nothing, but now there is! And this is the way it goes...
WE GET OFF UNTIL TUESDAY!!!!!!
then- on Tuesday it is walk 30 minutes
Weds.- rest
Thurs-walk- 30 minutes
Fri- rest
Sat- walk 45 minutes

The hardest thing for me right now is not to walk more then she has assigned me to walk. But she is really protecting my hip. If you want to walk tomorrow- I'm sure that's ok- you know your body and what it's limitations are- but if your knee begins to ache- STOP- that's what she told me about my hip anyway- so I'll pass what little knowledge I have accumulated to you.

As for PA- I think you'll figure it out as to whether or not you should do it! It sure sounds like fun!!

I did my 40 minute walk last night in downtown Portland. Didn't think about the stop lights and crosswalks though! I'll remember taht the next time. My new shoes were wonderful. they stop my feet from rolling in towards my knees- so I had a better supprt for this walk. It took about 1 minute to get use to them and then it was just plain great from there on in. Did you know that you can adjust the way your shoe fits according to the way you lace it? I didin't! But it is true- and the cute guy at the store yesterday showed me how to lace and tie my shoe so that my heel wouldn't slip out of the back of my shoe... it worked!
I'm a very thankfully down 2.2 lbs. from last week, making my total weight loss since I started this 6 weeks ago at 11 lbs. It is very slow weight loss- but it is weighth loss!
How was everyone else's weekend for walking?

just popping in here to share a little bit of inspiration :)

just got a phone call from my brother -- my dad who, AlreadExcitedGrammy's DH -- completed a full-marathon this morning in Cincinnati! He finished in 4 hr 13 mins.

Evansmom was relaying in the event as well, I didn't get a report on her team -- that will come later for us

i'm lying in bed today with the absolute worse sore throat I have had a long time. I'm 50/50 on my walk/jog tomorrow morning as the temp will be lower 30s as well. I may postpone until tuesday morning. lots of rain schedule here this week, but I plan to drag my walking feet to the treadmill at the Y when the weather doesn't cooperate

funny shoe story :)

So, can you share that, Karen? I have new shoes that I love, but I still think that I'm rolling in. And I think that that might have some bearing on my sore knee---that and the one machine at Curves, which I intend to avoid for the next while. I've done a lot of steps, but didn't get out to walk this weekend, due to family stuff. That (the time) is the hardest thing, isn't it?

OhMom- that is very inspirational! I can barely imagine me doing this let alone a grandpa doing it! That must've been so fun to see and so exciting for him. Was this the first marathon he's ever done?
I hope you're feeling better today. I ahte sore throats- they just make everything so hard! It's good to skip a couple days when you're training I think- too bad you had to be sick to get to that skip!
How did Evansmom do in the relay?

Debbie- I would love to share how to tie the shoes- but I just don't know how to tell you to do that! I will look to see if I can find a diagram of how to do it! It includes using the second hole at the top of the shoe (the one that is out of sequence with the other holes) See..... I told ya it'd be hard to explain!

Monica- did you decide to walk yesterday? How did it go????

Tigerlily and Cheryl- how was your weekend? Any walking for you?

I just returned home from my first OFFICIAL OFFICIAL day of Marthon training. Here's what I did...
5 min warm up
3 min run
2 min walk
Repeat sequence 7 times
5 min cool down

I really pushed hard on it, I wanted to give up after five repetitions, but motivated myself by thinking about how happy I will be that I trained for that half marathon! So, I finished it, and now I know that I can do it so I won't let those negative thoughts haunt me any more!

ohMom, I found this workout in the book that I bought, but it is a lot like the one you are doing! If you need it once you finish yours, I will definitely share!

Anyway, I must now be off to class! Talk to you all later! Keep it up!

Ashley

ashley -- glad you found something you like :) kudos to you for challenging yourself!

i haven't heard from evansmom yet, I hear my Dad is recoperating now :) this was his third marathon, but first one that he finished! it is exciting for him. I don't remember him running in the other two so must've been over 15 years ago?

anyhow -- i'm on the mend -- strep test neg today -- not sure if I'll run/walk tomorrow or just pick it back up on Wed. my DH says I should absolutely take another day off -- we'll see. once my appetite comes back to normal I will want some activity pts I know!
