Marathon training check in thread

I did something today I have NEVER done before. I got out of bed early to exerecise! :p I did TM for 2 miles at 3.8-4.0 mph and then I did 20 min Winsor Pilates as my cool down. Then I got ready and went to work.

Monica, I can't be much help on the TM pick. Ours is a Pro-Form 625 PT about 3 years old now so I am sure that there are different types now.

Karen, Loved the shoe story. Sorry, it made me smile too. ;) At least you are able to talk about it.

I run with powersteps orthotics in my shoes. It gives me better support and now my achilles tendon hasn't been giving me any problems. (Just my knee, but it's kind of a different problem. Doesn't hurt when I run, only when I kneel--So I haven't been kneeling when I pray.)
Molli, I admire your dad for doing the marathon. How cool! I hope he is happy too. Take care, that sore throat thing I would guess is the virus that was going around here. I hope you feel better soon.

Ashley, thanks for posting your workout. I may ease into something like that soon. I used that sort of method when I was prepping for my 5ks last year. It really does work.

Tigerlily.... is that you in the pic in your signature? Did you just add that? If it's you- then you are sooooo cute!

Good work on early rising ! It's so ahrd to do, but usually for me, if I don;'t do it first thing in the day, I just don't do it! I am proud of you for going the extra mile and getting onn the tm and doing tapes!

Just a quick question..

Did somebody mention having a map of the half marathon? I can't find one online...where did you find it?! I would like to include a copy in my "Road to Marathon" journal... Please let me know if you know hwere it might be! Thanks!

Ashley

Good morning everyone!!

Hope everyone is doing well.....

Ashley - I have seen a map - found it on this website - www.disney-deads.com - then click on links - 2002 Course Maps - I saw one for the 2004 race and it looks the same.

Karen - I didn't end up walking on Sunday, or yesterday - figured I'd keep to your trainers schedule and do my 1/2 hr tonight. Thanks also for that link to the story - I got choked up, and chuckled too (when she said her jaw hurt from smiling too much).

TigerLily - thanks for trying for the TM, and the posting for the orthotics - anything is better than nothing, right?

Molli-kudos for your dad!! Hope you're feeling better!!

Here's my treadmill update - I ended up buying one on Sunday. I bought a Reebok treadmill that includes iFit.com training, a Hawaii walking video (you see stuff in Hawaii, so it seems like you're walking there), a walking CD, hand weights, and free S&H. Will hopefully arrive by the 12th.

Have a great day!!!

Hey everyone,

Boy do I need to get busy on the treadmill. I do so good working out, but I never seem to find the time to get on the treadmill. I may have to subsitute the treadmill in the morning instead to get some time in.

I told my one boss yesterday that I was going to do the 1/2 marathon in January and now she asked if I want to do the 1/2 Philadelphia Marathon in September. Ok, I am scared enough to do the one in January, lol! So now I am contemplating doing the one here in September. I am not sure yet. I have so much to do, and what if I look like such a complete wimp in front of my boss???

mishoe01- Don't worry about the Dolylestown Pa walk. I went with Doreen and Erin in November when we did that walk and it was nice and not difficult at all. You will do great! Congrats on ordering your treadmill. I just got mine a little less than a month ago. It really helps with training.

Ashley- Here is the map http://psc.disney.go.com/dwws/media/MarathonCourseMap1.jpg

Tigerlily- I am so proud of you for getting out of bed early. I know how difficult that is. I am definately not an early person and I swore I could never do it. Now I do it everyday except for rest days. Way to go!:cheer2: :cheer2: I love how I feel so great after working out in the morning. I feel like a million bucks!

Molli- I sure hope you get to feeling better. I hear you on those activity points. I am resting yesterday and today because I overdid it on Sunday playing volleyball after doing a 69 minute Sculpting tape. Tell your dad congrats!! I can't wait to hear from Evansmom about her race!! By the way, I will be staying at the Caribbean Beach.

Everyone is doing such a great job. I hope to maybe try to do 30 minutes of treadmill even though today is a rest day. Its my second rest day in a row, so I think a little cardio will be ok. I mostly wanted to rest my upper body.

Yes Karen, that’s me just added the pic after returning from recent trip. (2 sizes smaller since last year I might add!) I did not get up early today to do anything, so I must do it later tonight.

I found it. WDW Marathon Map info

Monica, congrats on the TM purchase. Now, don’t use it as a clothes rack. (That is the standard joke around here from many who have purchased one and don’t use it that it makes a great clothes rack.) My TM also connects to iFit.com, but I’ve never connected it. We bought when it was just in the development stages and I haven’t gotten used to using their site.

Melanie, I have an opportunity to do a ½ marathon here in September too, but I have opted for my “first time” experience to be at WDW. I want to experience all the emotions that go with “first time” as I did when I did my first 5k in the Race for the Cure benefiting the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in honor of my Mother and in memory of my Grandmother. It was the emotional experience for sure and I enjoyed the whole experience too!

You gals all sound great! I'd love to start following your training regimen. How do you post it weekly/daily? I have yet to buy a tm, limited space but come the cold weather it will be a must. I have been walking outside about 3x/wk and did the ms walk this past sunday. I am also a little apprehensive about a 1/2 marathon but I know it will be thrilling. I've tried to talk my firends & family into joining but they think I'm nuts. My dh & ds may come to cheer me on, he's not a disney fanatic like me.

I'm wondering about the running shoes. What brand? I bought walking shoes for our disney trip back in October, guess I'll be buying some new ones soon. I hope to do the Doylestown walk on Sunday, debating about strolling a toddler for that distance.

Well...Today was supposed to be a 30 min. cross train day on my schedule, but I didn't know what to do to cross train! I don't have a pool accessible, and I am afraid to ride my bike in this city (we have a LOT of hills...the whole city is a hill!! And I live on the middle of it, and my car is not big enough to cart my bike elsewhere, and i don't have a helmet...enough excuses? So...I walked for a half hour, and that felt good, too.

Auntmeme-Welcome! It sounds like you are off on the right foot, too... I am so nervous I just keep reading my book! If you need a program to follow, let me know. The book I am reading has 8 different, ones, and they all seem very doable. I see you are also at one day cheat free...me too! Let's keep it up! And trust me, there are lots of us running/walking, you will not have a problem finding somebody to accompany you if nobody else chooses to.

I'm also curious about which brand of running shoes to purchase. I am thinking Nike Shox because they look so comfortable and I think the cushion would help me feel more comfortable running. Anybody had these before? Or is there another perfect one out htere? Let me know!

I'm going to make some running cds tonight, so please, continue ot post song ideas! I know one is going to be all of the fast paced Off Kilter Music, and one upbeat Disney songs, but I need other ideas, too, please!

Keep up the good owrk...with you guys around I don't know that I could ever feel unmotivated! Thanks! Oh, thanks for the map, too...I'm printing it off for my journal! Now, if only I could get a copy of my registration, too!

Ashley

Auntmeme- I can't really recommend a shoe, but I can tell you that my trainer sent me to a store that sells to runners specifically. they had all brands, but, because they knew what to watch for when I walked , they knew what kind of shoe to fit me in. Is there a local marathon support group in your area? Someone there could tell you where you should go to be fit for the right pair for you. Good luck!
I'm very apprehensive myself, but I have wanted to do this for sometime.... and even if I don't finish in the proper amount of time, I'm gonna finish and I am gonna revel in EVERY moment of it ! Put your fear aside and join us! We will all support you and be there for you when you cross that finish line..... with you face aching because you were smiling the whole way! ;)

Ashley- good for you for walking the whole 30 even though you were "supposed" to cross train. I'm afraid if it were me (at least the OLD me) I would've said to myself.... "Self, you can't cross train, because you don;t know what to cross train with, so.... just skip it 'til you find something to cross train with..." and then I would've forgotten to find something!!
About music- make sure you do "Go The Distance" from Hercules!
Now, here's a question for everyone.......

What are your first names???????

Mine's Karen ::yes::

Hello All!

I have been coming to this website for years - but have changed my e-mail a few times, and changed my DIS name too. However, I was hoping I can join you to train for the 1/2 marathon? I want to do it soooooo badly and I a pretty sure I can convince my husband to do it too. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi everyone!!! My name's Monica.

Don't have anything to add re: shoes, other than to agree with what Karebear1 said about going to a specialty store. I'm planning to devert to the experts when I get to the point of buying my "marathon" shoes.

Auntmeme---welcome!!! I hope you do the walk this weekend in Doylestown --- I'll be there!!! I would love to meet you!! I'm feeling a little nervous about it (haven't done that long of a walk yet), but I WILL DO IT!!!! I'm driving up from MD on Friday, and staying in Willow Grove.

KrisNoth -- welcome to you too!! The more the merrier!!

Ashley - way to go still walking on a cross training day!! WOOHOO! I'm proud of you!! I went to Target today, and bought 2 different CD's to help me move---Bon Jovi's Slippery when Wet, and a 2 CD set of 80's New Wave (I love 80's music!!). For something Disney - I've always thought Hakuna Matata has a good tempo.

Karen - did my 1/2 hr leisurely walk today - how about you? Walked a total of 8214 steps today.

Is my treadmill here yet????? (I want it NOW!!!:D )

TTFN

Monica- I haven't walked yet today- I may do it tomorrow because my hip is acting up and I want to see the chiropractor before I do. I may still do it today though....
What kind of pedometer do you use? I assume you didn't walk around all day counting your own steps! I just bought one online about 30 minutes ago. Interested to know what you use.

OH and more music ideas- the Lilo and Stitch CD is great walking music- some slower tunes and some faster ones- it's good for me because I need the slower ones right now.

WELCOME TO YOU KRISNOTH! Of course we would love to have you and your fam join us as well. have you registered for the marathon yet? If not, you really should- it's getting pretty full and will close to registration.

Well, I am currently a cd making machine! Unfortunately, I tried to find "Go the Distance" because it IS a great song, but the CD I have wiht it on it is at my parents' house! Darn! Oh well, I made a good Disney one anyway. I also made my Off Kilter one, titled "Sexy Legs in Skirts." If you know Off Kilter, you know what I'm talking about!! I WISH my legs looked that good in a skirt! ;)
Anyway, 3 more CDs to go for tonight, just some mixes of lots of rock stuff and the like. So, fun night...tomorrow is my rest day, but I WISH I could go out and enjoy my new tunes! Keep it up, and welcome KrisNoth!

And everybody, I am very glad to meet you... I'm ASHLEY!

Take Care!

Hi Karen,

Sorry your hip is acting up---bad hip .:sad2: !!! Smart move tho, waiting to see the Dr before doing anything. Take care of yourself!

About the pedometer - I bought a Sportline "talking" pedometer from Target - $11.99. You can "mute" it, so it only talks when you press the buttons (or you can set it to tell you each 1000 steps, xx miles, etc). It took a little bit of work to set it correctly - at first it was telling me I walked 16 steps, when I had just walked 10. Now it actually counts 9 when I walk 10 (I figured this was the better way to err).

I just bought myself a CD "fanny" pack - holds CD player plus 3 CDs to help me on my journey.

Hello WISHwalkers! I finally got over here to find you! I knew Karebear1 was going to start this thread and I'd been meaning to join in and got distracted.....just a distracted as I've been regarding exercise/training too!

Well, this morning I got out of bed and went for a walk
It was pretty painless actually. I did 30 minutes and then about 10 minutes of streches afterwards.
Karen, I'm at about the same place as you...touchy joints and a persnickety hip, and still a mess of weight to loose. So I'll be starting nice and easy, which is why I needed to get started NOW....got a long way to go. You mentioned ordering a walking CD of '60's music, will you share where you got that, please?

Anyone have pedometer recommendations, I'd like to get one. So far Mishoe01 mentioned the Sportline Talking one $12 at Target....any others?

Has anyone read/seen John Bingham's book "No Need for Speed"? Someone has recommended that to me and I haven't been able to find it, though I haven't been really SHOPPING for it yet ;)

I plan on a walk tomorrow and Thursday, then Friday off as I have to travel to LA for business....BUT.......Saturday and Sunday will be spent at DISNEYLAND :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: so there will be plenty of walking there, that's for sure.

I'll be doing the 1/2 Marathon with my friend, PixieMagic, and we'll probably be arriving Friday and staying through Sunday night at All Stars, then upgrading for three or four nights to a deluxe (as our reward!).

Well, it's 10:50P here and 5:30A seems to come awfully fast, so I'm off to bed. I'll check in here frequently and share any info/tips I get also. (Just printed the course map, thanks!)

My training so going good.......
I got my treadmill about 2 months ago and hav ebeen puttingit to good use.
I began a marathon thread ( Q's about the marathon" and someone there mentioned running a mile then walking for two minutes........
I have been doing that and it works beautifully!
I WAS jogging 2 miles in 20 minutes which was good but couldn;t go furhther but once I added the 2 minute walking, I amnow up to 5 miles in under anhour. I havent been able to exercise yet this week...just lots happening here, buur, I will catch up.

About shoes........I have these great nikes acs shoes that are so wore in I love em, I am trying to preserve them now till next january cause I cant find them anymore lol!
I know this wont work Ill have to find another pair but I di remember someone also posted not to wear new shoes on that day...........
anyway till next time
renee

Good morning everyone,

Well last night I jogged for 2 straight miles doing a 12.45 minute mile (4.7miles PH). I still am amazed that I jogged for 2 miles without stopping. I also did a walking 5 minute warm-up and a 5 minute cool down so I went a total of 2.5 miles. I felt such confidence afterwards. I had been doing some 5 min run/5 min walking intervals and this time the first 10-15 minutes were not that bad. The last 5 minutes were the most difficults. I amagine as you get better it gets easier to run.

The only problem is that my bra rubbed and I have a very sore spot on my lower rib cage. It was so raw this morning that I was afraid to do the FIRM that I had planned. I skipped it out of fears of not being able to wear a bra during the day to work. So far so good, its not bothering me but I feel guilty missing my workout.

Renee,
Ill have to try the 2 minute walk thing. That might be enough to help me add to the 2 mile run.

Ibouncetoo- I got a nice pedometer at Radio Shack. I had tried one I ordered off QVC and hated it. This one is so much better.

Hi Ashley-Nice to meet you too!

mishoe- Hope you get your treadmill soon! It must be torture waiting for it.

KrisNoth- Glad you will be joining us!!

Tigerlily- You know, thats a good thought about experiencing the marathon for the first time at WDW.

WELCOME Ibounce! I was wondering where you had disappeared to! I got the cd on Amazon.com- it's called "Shape Fitness Walk 1: 60's Hits and cost 11.21 plus 2.49 S&H= $13.70 It has some great music on it. If you go to Amazon and look it up- there will be sound bites to some songs on the cd and a list of all the songs on the cd. I did a slower tempo because my trainer said that with my hip problem, she wanted me to start out with slower pacing. She said 50's music would be good- but 60's, I think, is even better.

Monica- I've been looking for a cd fanny pack thing- where did you find it? It's good that it holds other cd's as well! Did you ever in your life think you would be begging for a TM to be delivered to your home so you could workout on it?!?!?!

I ordered a pedometer yesterday- it was a little on the pricey side, but it does LOTS! I found a site that outlined the top 10 pedometers (for reliabilty and accuracy) and this one was on this list. It not only tells you how far you've walked, calories and fat burned and number of steps you've taken, but also what speed you were walking at, and whether you are thirsty or not. Well.... maybe the thristy thing wasn't part of it.... but the rest was ! :teeth: I'll let you know how it works when I've done some experimenting with it.

Melanie- that is great news about jogging for 2 miles! WOW! It's amazing to me how fast your body can change. Now all you need to do is buy a sports bra and your life will be sooooo much easier! I like Tigerlily's idea about the WDW marathon being my very 1st marathon ever too- it's a nice thought isn't it?

Wiskband- 5 miles in under an hour! I'll bet you can see the light at the end of the half marathon tunnel can't you! That would be so exciting to me to know that in under an hour I am almost half way through the marathon course.! WOOOHOOOOOO for YOU!!!

I bought the Fanny pack thing at Target last night (along with too much other stuff!!)...I think it was $19.99 - it even has a built in outside thing to plug in your headphones (so you can close the case and not have the cord sticking out).

I did hear that we can't use headphones at the marathon, so this is strickly for training.

Am heading over to the gym to tackle the treadmill after work today.

Welcome ibounce!!

Have a great day!
