In the Meijer store next to the customer service desk.:scared:
I was in the store in line to make a return and this lady in line says "that man is peeing in the trash can." Well, everyone looked and yes he was. No one knew how to handle this. The young people at the desk had no idea what to say to the man, so the customer went and got a manager. By the time she got to the desk the man was finished and was back up to the counter to turn in his lottery tickets.
The manager said she had no idea how to deal with this and she would just change out the trash can. She thinks the man has dementia and did not want to say anything.
Would you have said anything? Most of us just stood there with our mouths open. I had never seen that before, outside yes-inside no!!

If he were an elderly man who might have dementia, then the manager should ahve called the police. Not to be punative, but if this same man had driven to the store, he is likely putting his own life, plus that of others at risk.

If he did not have dementia, then he might have otherwise been mentally ill and again, the police should ahve been called to assess the situation.

If he was perfectly sane and jsut a pig, the police should have been called to haul him off to jail--that's disgusting.

I agree, the police should have been called. Not to mention the can he peed in now has hazardous waste since you don't know if he did or did not have anything that might be transmitted through contact with the urine... UGH... It's all just disgusting...

What you stated makes a lot of sense. It was just so weird at the time.
My sister kept saying that the police should be called and the customer who was so insistant said that also, but the manager said no. I think most of us just didnt know what to say or do. I now know in the future, but I am hoping that I never see that again.

Whats a "Meijer" store, is that part of WDW? If so, that manager sounds like a typical Disney trained manager. "Don't interfere with the customer, because we want his repeat business"

If not, OF COURSE you should call the cops, Indecent exposure. Was there kids present, etc, etc.

Meijer - a chain based in Michigan where the stores are very similar to Super Target, Super Walmart, etc. - food plus merchandise in one huge building - but they were first I knew about of this type.

You say, "Hey! You can't pee in that! I'm sorry, but you're going to have to leave the store."

If it turns out there is some kind of mental impairment, you have to make a judgement call. If you are unable to make those kind of calls, a call to the cops is probably the best thing. Cops, for the most part, are pretty good about being able to make those kind of calls.

Almost as bad as the Homeless People Brushing thier teeth in the water fountain at my Publix store!:sad2: No-one said a word to them, and I have NEVER drank out of the Fountain since than.

I guess I would be grateful he just had to pee:)

And the OP said he went over to turn in his lotto tickets...which means his hands touched them after he was peeing in the can....gag!:scared: :scared: :scared:

I don't know about calling the police but I think that the manager should have actually spoken to him to first assess the situation. Then she could have kindly (or not so kindly depending on the situation) asked him to leave. Does the store not have its own security?

The manager of a department store is not trained to assess a posible medical condition, nor are they trained to deal with a mental condition. If this elderly man is just ushered out of the store you could have just taken someones parent that walked out of the home unknown to them and lost them back on the street. You could have put a mental patient that could be a harm to himself or others out on the street or caused him to become confrontational to the store employees or patrons.

This is a job for police and ems not a store manager, a man peeing in a store is not a normal occurance that should be just sluffed off nor judged by retail workers.

I didn't mean that the employee should assess his medical condition. I meant that the manager could at least see if it was an elderly man or what the basic facts of the situation were. Of course, she should call the police if necessary. I'm just saying, that's not necessarily the automatic first reaction.

What would not be neccesary about calling the police over a man peeing in a garbage can in a retail store, what reason would there be?

Well, for instance, it might be someone who has dementia who has strayed away from their loved one. If they wait like two minutes, their caregiver might reappear.

Or they may get frightened and leave the store and lost, my point being, this is for sure a reason to call the police and have them on the way, if it is say the case of a person that wandered too far from there caregiver than the police can help them get back to that person. if they already have been reunited, than the police can go on their way.

People should never be aprehensive to call the police in a strange kind of situation such as this, thats what they are there for. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for your input NYBlue, although I still am not convinced that I would automatically call the police. An ambulance might be a better solution. To me, it depends.

Also, can anyone tell me if this store has security?
