Majority of adult Americans don't want H1N1 shot

Since I am not in a high risk group, and therefor not worried about dying if I catch the H1N1, I will not be getting the vaccine. Since it will most likely not kill me if I catch it, I would rather build my own immunity then inject myself with mercury and formaldehyde to save the inconvenience of being sick.

I will however, be proactive in trying NOT to catch it, and if I do, will use natural remedies to make myself get better quicker. Go ahead, call me a hippie lol.:hippie:

me too!

My DD has never had a flu shot, and never had the flu. She is almost 11.

Also, no one I know is seeking it out.

I'm waiting to see what side effects will be that'll start showing up about five years from now. Unless we don't make it through 2012 in which case I'll be bummed because I'll die without knowing how this story ended. :)

All kidding aside, DH says we're both immune because we likely had the Swine flu in the 70's when I was a child and he was a teen. Neither one of us want anything to do with that shot.

At first we weren't going to get the shot because it was new and I wanted to wait and see if there were many negative reactions. Then a few children in our city died and my husband said he didn't want to take any chances with our son, so we all got the shot.

Also, several of my relatives got the H1N1 and ran high fevers and were downright miserable for a week. It just didn't make sense to me to risk it when there is a vaccine available. I don't feel like being sick for a week or more when I don't have to. Also, since healthy kids were dying, it just wasn't worth the risk with our son, with something that is preventable.

None of us had any type of reaction from the shot and now we don't have to worry about H1N1. I travel a lot, so I took that into consideration also. I feel like we made the right decision for our family.

This is our feeling too.

Nobody had any reaction in our home from our shots yesterday. DH will get his tonight.

You DH is wrong. That strain was not like this one. If you were born 25 years earlier and had the 1956 strain they he would be right.

I plan on getting it but right now in my area the demand for high risk groups is still higher than the supply. When those who need it most have had their chance I will get it. My first concern was my kids and they got theirs a couple weeks ago. Our ped has always recommended everyone in our house get the (seasonal)flu shot, this one is no different to us.

Every adult I know is trying to get it - as well as trying to get it for their children.. It's just not readily available..

Why are they trying to get it? Because no one wants to waste their time, money, and energy being sick if there is a way of possibly preventing it.. No one wants to end up with hospital bills if they should become ill enough to require hospitalization.. It's a nasty virus that can not only kill, but cause suffering that may not be necessary.. Some who have had the H1N1 virus and "recovered" are still facing weeks and weeks of lingering fatigue and racking coughs.. It just doesn't sound like "fun"..Parents don't want to chance their children being one of the children that die - regardless of what the odds are.. No further explanation necessary on that one..

If in fact this article is correct, then why is there still such a shortage of the vaccine? :confused3

This is so true! I came down with H1N1 on November 6th, and I'm still tired, and I'm still coughing.

I'll be getting the vaccine when it's available. My doctor advised it, and explained that it may help if a mutated strain comes around next season and give a little extra immunity. My kids have gotten the first dose, we're waiting on the second.

Next season they will be including H1N1 in the seasonal vax.

I will not get it and have no concerns at all about contracting H1N1. Truthfully, I think this whole thing has been blown HUGELY out of proportion by the media and everyone else. H1N1 flu has been around since the 70's.

I don't know why people keep saying this :confused3 This strain has not been around since the 70's.

Nope, not true. Swine/H1N1 was not here in the 70's. But it was here in the mid-50's, which is why I didn't get the vaccine. I was born in '49, so most likely have resistence to it. Of course, it could have been a mild case of it when I got sick 3 weeks ago...aches, temp (which I very seldom get), sore throat, etc. But, I did get the seasonal flu shot. I've had full blown flu, and I don't want it again. And I had it in the early 70's!! I have never been so sick as I was then. And 4 days after I got sick with it, dh got it. We had a 4 month old in the house...thank God my mom lived in the same town...she literally moved in with us until I got better. Never, ever want to feel like that again!!! Ever.
But, my dd, 16, did get the H1N1 vaccine last week. I'm off to WDW for two weeks, right after Thanksgiving. It would be just my luck that she would get sick when I had been gone for 4 days....with just her dad around. Not a pretty picture. Better safe than sorry I figured.

Then why is it acting so differently? :confused3

The 5 yr. old son of my Dson-in-law's friend is currently in the hospital in the Pediatric ICU.. He came down with the swine flu (confirmed upon admission)and in less than 24 hours was hospitalized.. No underlying medical issues, yet he's in very critical condition.. I've been through many, many flu seasons in my 60 years and don't ever remember otherwise healthy young adults, teens, pregnant women, and children dying from the flu.. There has to be something that is different - or more deadly - than the regular flu, or basically we would just be seeing the very young (infants) and the elderly dying - what you normally see during the "regular" seasonal flu..:confused3

Then those of us who do need or want it would greatly appreciate it if you would send all of those readily available shots up here to us who can't find it anywhere.. Thanks! :thumbsup2

Can't send it but you could move up to my area in Canada.

The score in my family

me - received seasonal flu vaccine, currently searching for H1N1 vaccine.
my son - received both seasonal and H1N1 vaccine.

My feling is that if I can increase the odds of my son not getting sick or dying, I will do so. It's all about the numbers and statistics with me.

My 2 kids and I all had the H1N1 flu mist 3 weeks ago. We never felt any side effects from it. The kids need to go back for a 2nd dose soon.

A lot of people I know are getting it, but when I went to the health dept. there was only one other family there at the time. Also our health dept. still has vaccine available which means there are a lot of people in the priority groups who aren't getting it. I think its time they offer it to the rest of the people. The priority people have had 4 weeks to get it.

The Canadian H1N1 shot IS different though. ;) They put adjuvants in most, though not all, of the Canadian ones. Not sure if there are other differences.

My kids had the mist a month ago. No problem.

I would get one except in most areas of FL (maybe all) it is only for the folks on the priority list. Even those offered at Walgreens and CVS in other parts of FL are going by the priority list. Walgreens here has none. My Dr is only giving to those on the list. Our health Dept is only going by the list and has stopped right now as they are starting to give in the schools here. They had it and offered to the priority groups since the day it came out. Enough time I think.

I have seen the lists of deaths in FL and there were lots of 30-50 year olds on it!

How about if we just drive up there? We're only a few hours away.. Are there drugstores and clinics open to anyone - or would you have to be a resident of Canada?

It's ridiculous that my DD, Dson-in-law, and DGD can't get it here - yet other areas and states have back logs of it just sitting there waiting for people to come in and get it..:headache:

Nope. I'm pregnant and I'm not getting it. Why? Because I'm one of the lucky ones who got GBS (well a variant called CIDP) from a seasonal flu shot in 2004. I will tell you this it took me TEN WEEKS from injection to onset of symptoms. How do I know then that it is flu shot related? Because the Gov't paid out my claim.

My DD7 will not be getting the shot either. This particular variant of the flu isn't all that deadly. The problem is with secondary infections. If your kid (or you) gets better and then gets really ill again, then it's time to take them to the hospital ASAP. That's a sign of a secondary infection. The virus itself isn't all that deadly, the secondary infections are.

Believe me, I agonized over getting the shot for DD for a long time. I've read everything I can get my hands on. Nothing is leading me to believe that the shot is worth ANY amount of risk for a healthy child. Besides, I haven't heard of any new cases in our area in weeks (knock wood).

You have to show proof of residency and then it is free.

It isn't available in drugstores but it is available at open H1N1 clinics and at many family doctors. There may come a time though when it is available to anyone who wants it no matter if they are Canadian or not. If I hear of that, I will let you know.

I won't be getting it. I'm not comfortable with it.
That being said, my opinion of it doesn't really matter. NH still doesn't have enough for more than the highest risk groups. At some point I'll be considered "high risk", as a 23 year old, but for the moment, I'm not high enough risk. And at this point, I've been exposed numerous times over by classmates that I spend a significant amount of time with. I'm a couple weeks past exposure and have had nothing more in the last couple weeks than a sinus infection.
