Majority of adult Americans don't want H1N1 shot

Not planning on getting it because I'm not in a high risk group and very rarely get sick. I'd rather some elderly person or a kid get it (especially if there does end up being a shortage). I don't do the seasonal flu shot (even though I could get it for free) because I just don't believe it's effective in the way its distributed.

I got my shot two weeks ago. We are having a clinic in my high school next week. Response seems low and I have heard several students tell me their parents told them horror stories. There is some video on youtube going around school showing a girl supposedly paralyzed from her shot. It scared most of the kids.

I may be incorrect but I remember reading that the two shots (H1 and seasonal flu ) should be given at least two weeks apart. It has something to do with the immune system response.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. This could mean that neither shot took fully if given together? :surfweb:

From what I was told (I got both at the same time).....the shot is a dead virus and so can be given at the same time. The mist is live and if you get that, you need to wait between.
They did give the shots to me in different arms.

I would love for my 16 year old to get one but forget about finding any in this area. I doubt that I would bother though.

I am a teacher with many students out with the flu. I am not in the high risk group and was told by a nurse who was working dispensing shots at the county services clinics that those of us born between the 50's thru the late 70's (I won't say which decade is mine:rotfl2:) and in good health were already exposed to swine flu and didn't need the shot.

That is correct information, apparently there was indeed H1N1 outbreak around 1957 or so..........it's not a military biological experiment gone haywire....like I actually heard in My emergency department the other evening.........seriously, i'm not kidding, I told the family member that I saw a black helicopter flying oiverhead just a few minutes ago and asked him if he has any of that new currency with the tracking strip imbedded.......he ran out....I was kidding with that however a family member did indeed express his concerns that H1N1 was a military experiment, he also thought 9/11 was staged......that's another thread

We're not getting it here as we're not high risk. We believe DS already had the swine flu (since they're not testing for it, and are considering all cases to be swine) so he should now be immune to it. Neither dh nor I caught it when ds had it. We both work in high public contact fields at this time and are just taking the regular precautions.

I feel confident about the shot's safety. Even if there is a miniscule risk of complications from getting the shot, I believe that the risks associated with H1N1 are greater.

Myself, DH, and our DD (2 years old) have gotten vaccinated. As soon as our youngest DD is 6 months old, I will look for a place to get her vaccinated as well.

I got my vaccination almost 2 weeks ago. No reactions, I feel fine. I am glad that I got it. I don't have kids, but if I did I would want them to be vaccinated. They have just opened clinics up here to the general public and I know many people who have gotten the shot as well as many who are choosing not to. Obviously it's a personal decision but I am very glad to have received one so early!:goodvibes

I'm not getting the regular flu shot this year either.
The H1N1, I would not get for the simple fact that they have not had extended periods of time to find out if there are side effects. I don't trust new drugs/vaccines. I'll take my chances this year.

My experience is the opposite...I do not want the shot & am not planning to give it to my child. Same with everyone I know -- I do not know anyone who got it or who wants it.

The shot is available to all where I live but I don't know anyone rushing out to get it.

Then those of us who do need or want it would greatly appreciate it if you would send all of those readily available shots up here to us who can't find it anywhere.. Thanks! :thumbsup2

I have never had a flu shot of any kind, and haven't had flu in 30+ years. This is what I told the nurse at my doc's office when she asked if I was getting the shot(s). I asked her if SHE was getting the shot and she said no-basically for the same reason. And she's exposed to sick people all the time!:confused3

I assist a pediatrition and have had children all around me coughing and sneezing with the flu. I have no desire to have the vaccine. Nor do any of the other approx 20 employees. And, it was available to us!!

I am healthy, not high risk, and would rather have one of "my kids" that are high risk take my vaccine. If I should get the flu, I will deal with it then. Until that time comes, IF it comes, I will continue taking all the normal precautionary measures. It has worked for me for over a decade.

For everyone that wants one, keep looking. I really hope you can find it!!!

I found a place that got some in. The kids and I went today, I got out of work early. DH will get our early tomorrow and get his.

Since I am not in a high risk group, and therefor not worried about dying if I catch the H1N1, I will not be getting the vaccine. Since it will most likely not kill me if I catch it, I would rather build my own immunity then inject myself with mercury and formaldehyde to save the inconvenience of being sick.

I will however, be proactive in trying NOT to catch it, and if I do, will use natural remedies to make myself get better quicker. Go ahead, call me a hippie lol.:hippie:

At first we weren't going to get the shot because it was new and I wanted to wait and see if there were many negative reactions. Then a few children in our city died and my husband said he didn't want to take any chances with our son, so we all got the shot.

Also, several of my relatives got the H1N1 and ran high fevers and were downright miserable for a week. It just didn't make sense to me to risk it when there is a vaccine available. I don't feel like being sick for a week or more when I don't have to. Also, since healthy kids were dying, it just wasn't worth the risk with our son, with something that is preventable.

None of us had any type of reaction from the shot and now we don't have to worry about H1N1. I travel a lot, so I took that into consideration also. I feel like we made the right decision for our family.

I didn't get the shot, but my 4 year old nephew did Tuesday. Well, I went and stayed with him yesterday morning because he had a temp. of 101. And, my BF said her nephew was also home after getting the shot on Tuesday.

I'm not getting it.

My babysitter (who is in my house 2x weekly) was diagnosed with it last week. My mom and dad were diagnosed with it yesterday. My dad was in my house, subbing for my babysitter last week.

A few weeks back DH and I got something we'd never had before. We now suspect it was the swine flu... we were miserable.
We monitor kidlet's temperature but figure that since almost everyone we spend a lot of time with has come down with it ( actually diagnosed) that it's too late for the vaccine to even have a purpose for us.

we aren't planning on it - dd's elem school will have the spray after Thanksgiving - we have to send in the permission slip by tomorrow. I was adament no then on the fence when I read mist - then I read LIVE virus...so I'm back to being a NO!

Indecicive(sp!) enough for ya?

Since I believe everyone in my family has already had H1N1, I don't have any plans of getting the vaccine for anyone in my family.

I've never taken the yearly flu shot either. I figure, once you get it, you're immune from there on out. If anyone in our family were to become high risk, I'd definitely rethink getting it.

I have no plans on getting the vaccine and in fact have never gotten a seasonal flu shot in my 24 years. I asked my dr if I should and he saw no reason since I was healthy and not in the high risk group.

I do however think I have already had it. About a week after returning from Disney I ran a high fever for a few days along with a cough and sore throat. I still have a cough occassionally but it has gone down significantly in the past week.

I am still being cautious though. I always wash my hands and have been carrying around anti-bacterial wipes and hand gel to use.
