Major Netflix Changes Underway

I'm a DVD only user, since I have satellite internet and streaming would use up my download allowance, so this isn't a problem for me at this point. I had imagined that a few years down the road, my internet options would probably allow streaming, since they always seem to improve. Oh, well. Maybe the Netflix options will have changed by then too. I did notice that many comments noted that this was really just a pass through of updated studio fees. If that's the case, I don't think we can complain much.

Thanks for bring this to our attention. I will have to look more into this. I use both and I agree with some of the comments. If I could have the same selection to stream, I wouldn't have an issue with this. There is a significant difference in the numbers of movies and how recent the release of the movie.

I use both streaming and DVD-by mail option. It works really well for our family. I'm not going to pay double the amount I currently do to keep this situation though. If Netflix goes to this pricing scheme, I would need to see them work harder to improve their streaming selection (have more things available and not make things disappear on me in the middle of watching a series). Otherwise I will go to DVD only.

I can understand the factors at play that would instigate such a decision on their part, but I cannot justify the increase. I'll have to do some more research when it gets closer to decision time.

I am disappointed to see this, but not disappointed enough to cancel my service all together. At least in my area, Netflix still gives me the biggest bang for the buck. It's the reason we were able to cancel cable and not miss it at all.

I'm a streaming only user and that's worked out mostly well for me. The biggest frustration is the limited catalog they offer for steaming. And it's arranged in such a way as to be totally frustrating. I can watch the first two seasons of Parks and Rec via Netflix, but if I want to watch the third season I have to be a DVD subscriber. :headache:

I agree with most other people who said that if they offered the unlimited DVDs and the unlimited steaming together as a cheaper option ($12ish) I would just get both.

That's really a shame to do this....I have Red box here....it's cheaper anyway.

I agree. I am not a huge fan of their streaming content as it needs to get better. Much of what is available is outdated and just not of the popular interest. I am more than likely canceling my subscription altogether before September. I can use Red Box or Blockbuster Express for cheaper if I want a DVD.

We tried the streaming and it was horrible. I will be sure to mark the DVD only box. Netflix just needs another excuse to raise their prices, again.

I agree with the others - ok IF they offer more streaming movies & newer releases. Their selection can be baffling.

My plan doesn't look much different price wise - we get the 3 blurays at a time and have streaming and it's about the same as it currently is for us(about $28/mo). The streaming works ok for us, not the best quality but it's decent, especially for being in Alaska on a 1meg dsl line. The mailing turnaround is actually impressive, they get them back in 1-2 days and we get new in about 2-3 days. I forsee no changes for us right now.

I most likely will drop it now, as it will make more sense for me to buy À la carte via itunes and Amazon.

We will probably keep both. We don't stream very often, but we do get a lot of Blu-Rays and DVDs. And the price is still a major bargain, compared to anything else in Manhattan.

I think they would of done this a little better by maybe raising the price for 1 Dvd and unlimited streaming by 1$ or 2$ then making a dvd only plan for the same price as the unlimited streaming. Thus creating a "discount" plan for having both.

I think it's pretty ballsy for them to raise prices in such a dramatic way. However, it's making me realize that I don't make very good use of my 1-DVD-at-a-time plan (I've had the same unwatched DVD in the house for over 2 weeks) so I'll probably switch to just streaming. I like the ability to watch on my Wii, Roku and i-Devices. So my net result will be a $2/month savings! :thumbsup2

Yeah, I just got an email from Netflix about this change. If it were only a couple of bucks more, I would probably not gripe but this is about $5 more for me to do both. So I will likely stop the streaming and stick to the 1 DVD plan.

We'll be dropping the DVD portion. We stream almost every night, but only watch a couple of DVD's a month.

I have both Hulu Plus and Netflix streaming and DVD. I find Hulu to have a better selection of streaming TV. I started the DVD plan because I found the streaming movie selection wanting. My instant reaction is to drop Netflix altogether to send a message about the huge increase in prices. The email says I have until September to think about it, so I may see if the streaming movie selection improves.

I think we'll be changing our plan. Probably going to DVD-only.
We got the e-mail that it will be $7.99 for streaming only (1) or $7.99 for DVD only (1 at a time). And wow, $15.98 for both. I'm not paying an extra $6 a month (up from the $9.99 I was paying) for the limited amount of streaming content they offer. I actually used it most for children's programming. Why aren't they offering a bundle package? I know it's just a few dollars, but it amounts to a 60% increase in the price of my current plan. That's insane.

I also think it's lame they're not grandfathering in their currnet customers. Or at least doing something.

We're going to cancel DVD and keep streaming.

We stream all the time and we love that we can stream not only on tv through our Wii, but on our laptops and devices as well.
