Major Netflix Changes Underway

What's interesting to me is a fair number of Disney new releases are up for Netflix streaming.

Bob Iger is pretty forward thinking when it comes to distribution. As someone who follows tech news he is often times the only head of a major studio who is willing to embrace new avenues of distribution.

It is a combination of sad and frustrating to watch industries try to cling to old business models and resist change. The biggest examples of this, at least as far as the web goes, are the news, publishing, and entertainment industries. Stop trying to make rules that prolong dependence on the old models. Instead look for ways to adapt to new ones.

There will be a time when you can watch new releases at home or in a theater on the same day. Forcing you to go sit in a theater to see new movies is a perfect example of the old way. There will always be people who want that theater experience just like there will always be people who want to go see a live concert.

Not happy about the price change but we will keep our netflix. I had to cut cable a few months ago when DH was laid off and with the dvd's, over the air tv,and streaming we have not missed our cable. My plan is still under $20.00 a month. Much rather pay that then the $90.00 a month comcast bill.

Why do an $8 disc subscription when there is a Redbox or Blockbuster box at ever Gas Station, Drug Store, Grocery Store, and McDonalds?

Not exactly. My nearest Blockbuster is about 15 minutes away and the nearest Red Box is 10-13 minutes away. I'm not going to drive back and forth everyday for that.

We don't have many convenient Redbox locations for us, either, and what there is often only has crappy movies and very few Blurays. All but about 1 Blockbuster within 50 miles of here closed down within the last year and the one that is left is in a bad intersection that is not worth the hassle of getting in and out of 99% of the day.

One reason we have Netflix is because of the Bluray option, but here lately it seems they have almost stopped adding blurays - for example, all of the StarWars movies and Back to the Future that have been on bluray for over 6 months now? Only DVD in Netflix.

Their streaming quality is crappy and the selection is odd. So much old stuff that nobody under 40 years old would watch much, where most of their target audience is probably under 40 years old. When we do use the streaming it is rarely at the highest quality level, often changes to a lower quality level in the middle of the show, the HD selection is bad (when it even works).

So you are giving me fewer Bluray options, a crappy selection of poor quality non-HD streaming, and you want to raise my rate $5/month? Ummm, why?

Netflix started out as a good company and has now fallen victim to greed and power.

So long.

We'll probably cancel or severely cut back our subscription at the end of August.

More money for Disney, I guess.

Add us to the ones who have changed their plan. We did it when we got the e-mail with the new prices.

We dropped the discs because I never seem to have enough time to watch them to make it worth it. I only kept the streaming because the kids use it a lot.

I'm all for Eureka marathons. Just finished it myself.

As to eclectic, I don't recommend Twin Peaks marathons. Four episodes in a row and I was having a conversation with a log.

OMG, I love Twin Peaks! I've watched both seasons and the pilot about 5 times each.

Cooper: "Can I ask her about her log?"
Truman: "Many have."

Netflix was nice but we dropped it quite a while ago now. After paying so much per month for cable tv and there only being so many hours a day you can devote to watching movies etc its just not worth it for us.

$5 - $10 a month is something you pay without thinking too much about it, if your getting up around $20 it's a little different, you tend to think about what your really getting for your money.

I enjoyed Netflix and only viewed the streaming ability as a minor addon since their selection of streaming material was so limited and poor. As soon as they anounced the 60% price increase, they eliminated their value to our family so I cancelled last night. I may have to give Hulu Plus a go :)

I think this price increase was predicted late last year when everyone realized how popular the streaming was and that Netflix secured the rights a few years ago for just a song from the major studios. When renegotiations came up with the first studio, everyone predicted the cost would be much higher and that it would be passed on to the customers. Seems to be the case.

I'll probably just scale back the number of discs at home and keep both services. RedBox's selection is so limited and really only stocks the huge blockbusters, most of which I couldn't care less about. Netflix is still a bargain, for the most part.
