Major Heat Wave for the Northeast'

I figure you can always pile on more layers in Winter.... after a certain point, you can't peel off more layers in Summer.

I hate when people wish the summer away--it's too short to begin with.;)

This always makes me laugh... people I work with say the same thing. We don't really have any say in the matter, so wishing it would go away doesn't really make it happen.

If it were up to me, it would never be here in the first place.

I live in Southern California where it is mostly an endless summer. We have been in our pool as late as november some years with slpikes in temps over 100 in december when the santa anas come. However right now it is downright chilly. I had to turn my fan off and am under a quilt. We get quite a few days over 100 degrees where I live but usually no or low humidity.

We're one of the few houses in my neighborhood that has central air (old Army housing built in the 50s). I would be dying right now if it wasn't for the AC. They've actually opened up parts of the base that would normally be closed today for the holiday because they have AC. I'm so glad I have no plans to be outside today.. I'm miserable as is at 39 weeks pregnant, I don't need to be any more miserable!

One thing about chilly weather is you can always add on clothes to keep warm - but in the heat you can only take off so much before you end up in jail - which locally is NOT air conditioned:lmao:
Amen! :thumbsup2 I'd rather be cold because you can add layers. But after you're nude, there's really not much else to do except suffer.

I'm currently a happy camper. Our central A/C will be repaired on Friday (knock wood), but when DH heard about this current heat wave coming up, he didn't want a repeat of what happened last time to me (heat exhaustion). Friday he surprised me with a brand new Danby portable A/C. I don't know how he got his hands on one, and I can't believe the low price he paid for it (we pay for everything with cash) but somehow he managed.

And all without me even asking for it. I DO LOVE that man!

It's not as good as central air (currently 80 degrees in the office right now with 60% humidity), but a heck of a lot better than sitting in stifling heat and suffering. I just roll it from room to room, depending on what room I'm going to be working in, stick the tubes in the window and turn it on. What bliss!

As much as DH loves my dropping all  'prudity' when it's hot, he gets that I'm not going to be in the mood just because I'm nude as a last resort. ;) I suspect this portable A/C is his idea of the best of both worlds. :rotfl: Well, that.....and he's working nights this week and has to sleep during the day.

I'll just be very happy when our central A/C is fixed. This summer has been brutal so far and I'm SO looking forward to fall.

I'm enjoying my time inside with air conditioning before it's time to turn it off.

No air conditioning in my house. It is rare that we would want it so we've never even bought a window unit. Although this week could make me re-think that! But it usually cools off at night so we just take it as easy as possible during the day. Try not to do too much and keep the fans running!

No central AC here, just units in our bedrooms and we only run those at night. I have window fans in each of our bedrooms(in the window that doesn't have the AC unit in it) that are set on High Exhaust and the door to the basement is open a little bit allowing the cool air from down there to be sucked up through the first floor and then on it's way up to the second. I have all the blinds, shades and curtains drawn and the ceiling fan in the living room is set on Medium. Thank goodness for the rather large shade tree that we have near our house. That helps keep the house cool too. I hope I don't have to go to far from home today.

Our central A/C will be repaired on Friday
This caught my attention because we often have discussions where folks don't believe that folks ever have to wait for A/C repair. Is this you-waiting-for-them, or for some reason are they-waiting-for-you?

I love the heat! Okay maybe not 100 degrees, my perfect day is more like 85.
But I still prefer that over the cold.

It is 95 degrees right now and I am sitting on my deck in the shade of the patio umbrella, comfy as can be-I am in a damp bathing suit and with a little breeze blowing it keeps me cool. We have a little Intex Easy Set pool(15'x36") that the kids are splashing around happily in right now-I jump in and out to cool off.
This do nothing day beats any winter day hands down in my book.
Oh and no central air here, but we have a big wall a/c in the living room that cools off the whole house in about 10 minutes, plus we have bedroom a/c.
None of them are on right now..

last night at 9 pm I checked our temp on weather.com and it was 89 here in Maine and Orlando it was 76....isnt this a wee bit backwards..

Hahaha, the same for me, my entire family is in New England, Maine, MA and CT and they are alllllll dying from the heat and the humidity. :headache:

I am in Southern California and it is a lovely 70 degrees and absolutely no humidity at all.

Hang in there to all on the East Coast going through that "Heat Wave" ... try to lay low, don't do allot of outside intense work, like the yard and limit your outside exercise; running etc. Drink plenty of water. It will soon pass.

Your heat wave was actually "Breaking News" for us last night on the 11pm late news here in San Diego.

At this moment, it is 19 degrees hotter here in central PA than in Orlando on a summer afternoon!

This weather is no fun if you have asthma. I so want to move to Maine (I know the Southern part is hot right now but Rocklan is 75 according to weather.com!). I feel like I spend all winter indoors and all summer too (I am sun sensitive also due to autoimmune disease). Bring on fall! :cool1:

I'm in Central NJ and at 3 pm when I went to pick up my DD from basketball camp it was 100  but I've been in the air conditioned house to air conditioned car so I haven't felt it as much :) and it's not that humid --- but unfortunately the humidity is coming just in time to get back to work :(

95 degrees is easy to handle at home. We have a small pool for the kids, window AC unit that is struggling, but not doing too bad. The problem with the AC is at night, it doesn't reach the bedrooms and to try to suck the cold air into the bedrooms, it must be cranked up while it's 70 outside or it won't kick on the compressor.

The real problem is at work. It can get up to 115 on the production floor. There is no escape, you just hang out, sweat, and suffer for 8-10-12 hours in 115 degrees, then crash your car on the way home because you are exhausted with a head that feels like it is going to explode.

Come to Maine...it's a wonderful place to live(even in the winter) It's days like these that we dream about in February;)Mid coast Maine is the coolest place to be they said on the news tonight. Humidity is supposed to be crazy high tomorrow...not really looking forward to that:sad2:But after all it is Maine and you don't have to wait too long for the weather to change.

I think it's the humidity that makes it miserable. My sister just moved from So Cal to NY last year to be closer to family. I think right about now they are missing your weather;)The one thing they don't miss is the wild fires. Right before they left they had to evacuate and the fire was about a mile away from their home...scary stuff:scared1:

I love our desert weather with very low humidity. Bring on the heat cuz it doesn't bother people in the southwest.

It was in the low 90s today and will be so all week -- as usual. Blue sunny skies and only 8% humidity. It also cools off nicely at night where the temps get down to the low 60s. So, in the mornings we just keep the windows open to let in the coolness and then turn on the swamp cooler around 11:00am.

I think we've had only 2 and a half inches of precipitation since January 1st. :sunny:

I know of a beautiful house with an inground pool that's for sale in Maine.:rolleyes1

No! No! No! No! Not in the winter!:scared1:

There is definitely a big difference between the heat in the southwest and the heat in the northeast. I lived for years in the Mid-Atlantic and New England, and when temps rise into the 90s, it is miserable. The humidity is horrible and the majority of people in New England do not have central air conditioning. Fortunately, most of the summer remains in the 70s and 80s.

We have been in Arizona for two years now and it is HOT in the summers, but 100+ temps here are much more tolerable than 100+ temps in New England. There is no humidity and, like you said, it does cool down at night. And every place has air conditioning. HOWEVER, the heat lasts A LOT longer here. No humidity, but the sun is relentless!

We are still adjusting to the southern Arizona summers.:scared: It's easy to pick out the native Tucsonans. They're the ones out jogging and riding bikes in the heat. Temps in the 100s is ho-hum to them.:rotfl:
