Major FLDS raid..51 girls removed

Some posters keep referring to FLDS as 'Mormons' this is not true. Mormons are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

"Polygamous groups and individuals in and around Utah often cause confusion for casual observers and for visiting news media. The polygamists and polygamist organizations in parts of the western United States and Canada have no affiliation whatsoever with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, despite the fact that the term "Mormon" — widely understood to be a nickname for Latter-day Saints — is sometimes misleadingly applied to them.
President Gordon B. Hinckley stated the following about polygamy in the Church's October 1998 general conference:
“I wish to state categorically that this Church has nothing whatever to do with those practicing polygamy. They are not members of this Church. Most of them have never been members. They are in violation of the civil law. They know they are in violation of the law. They are subject to its penalties. The Church, of course, has no jurisdiction whatever in this matter.

"If any of our members are found to be practicing plural marriage, they are excommunicated, the most serious penalty the Church can impose. Not only are those so involved in direct violation of the civil law, they are in violation of thelaw of this Church. An article of our faith is binding upon us. It states, 'We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law' (Articles of Faith 1:12).”

Nothing about us is similar. They are disturbed and abusive. The LDS-Mormon-church is totally against abuse. In fact in recent years many church articles have been written on treating woman with respect and as equals. The church denounces abuse. And our temples are nothing like theirs. I go to the temple often and I can assure you that all the services are full of respect and love not lovemaking.

These events make me sick and sad for the poor women and children who have been so demeaned and abused. I truly don't understand. :sad1:

I can promise you, I know these are not regular LDS members..I could never confuse the two..It's a shame if the two religions getted tarred with the same brush

eternaldisneyfan, well said. I was just getting ready to post but you took the words out of my mouth!

I know DFW news stated last night that half of the 16 year old girls taken out of the compound were pregnant.

What's really sad is that these girls are raised being taught these things. They know nothing else. Most of them don't know that what is being done to them is wrong because they have lived this for so long. And once they do get out it's hard to teach them otherwise because it has been the only thing they have ever known.

What happened in Utah in the 50s/60s? Educate me please.

Sorry, couldn't remember the exact date when I posted before. Jenny has also mentioned this incident: the Short Creek Raid of 1953. (Short Creek is the town now known as Colorado City, AZ and Hildale, UT; the name was changed about 40 years ago to try to dispel the notoriety of the 1953 raid.)

You can Google "Short Creek Raid" and find reams of information.
