Major Blackout

Remember when we were all worried about Y2K and what was going to happen? THIS is what we worried about!

In our area of Toronto we had power restored around 5:00 this morning. DH was stuck in the subway last night for about an hour before being evacuated. Fortunately we live close enough to the downtown area that he could walk home in an hour from there. DMIL and DBIL, who live 10 minutes away from us, however, are both still without power. Everybody around here was very calm and matter-of-fact and took it in stride. The up side was the most beautiful night sky - something you never see in an urban area.

Since the available power today is well below normal levels we're using our electricity very sparingly - no AC, washer, dryer, dishwasher, stove. The only real loss is the AC, though - laundry can always wait another day!

Dutchess County, NY..our power came back at 4 in the am. My dh is in NYC, stayed at a university club last night. Grand Central is still out, but some trains are running.

My sister and niece are in from WA state and we're supposed to go see Movin' Out at 2 pm tomorrow...we'll see if that happens...;)

Had a great time last night...went to neighbors, swam in the pool, cooked on the grill, all three kids slept in my bed and I slept on an air mattress that was still up 'cause of my sis's visit. They were at the CT casinos at the time with my parents and luckily had power.

We got power back at my house at Midnight. Looks like for most of Long Island people got power back between 9:30p and 8am this morning.

My poor brother commutes to Manhatten every day via the Long Island Railroad. He spent the night sleeping in his darkened office building. They closed the bridges to incoming traffic, so we couldn't even drive in to get him. :(

Hopefully they will have the LIRR back up and running soon so he can come home and get a shower and some real sleep.

Cindy in a much brighter NY this morning. ;)

Oh boy, just woke up a little whle ago. It was miserable here yesterday. I was coming home from taking my mom and grandma food shopping (our bad luck) when we noticed traffic lights were out. We thought it was just one street but then every traffic light was out. Police cars had their sirens on, firetrucks were rushing by. I could not get any radio stations for about 10 minutes. It was very scary. I knew my boyfriend was supposed to be coming home from work so I tried my cell phone, no reception. When I got to my mom's house her house phone didn't even work. It was a very freaky feeling. We put on a radio and heard about this being a widespread problem. Back at my house, it was so hot. I spent a lot of the night outdoors. I couldn't sleep. I sat in the car for awhile to listen to the radio and have a little relief from the heat. I went to bed around 2 in the morning and woke up to power. I hear it came on in our area around 4:30. I hope everyone else who was affected is having a better day today.:D

Another thing that is amusing to me are what the television news people are telling people to do if they have lost power. Um if they have lost power how can they be watching the tv?

Ah, try a hand held that runs on batteries. I have one, but I usually use the adaptor instead.

My dad was in Albany, and I called over to his place last night to see if they heard from him, but he answered the phone. Luck for him, he got done his business earlier than expected and caught a 3:40 pm flight back to Philly!

I was surprised (and thankful!) that Philly wasn't hit. I didn't even know anything was wrong til I heard the radio at 6:30 or so!
