Major Blackout

The power was out in Philly yesterday. Due to some kind of underground water main breaking.

Thats OK, The 80's are a blur for a lot folks who were born earlier than you too ;).

Does anybody besides me remember that blackout?

First I've heard of it, nothing happening where I am (Houston area). But try not to panic. *hugs*

Sending P&PD (hey, PD glows, right? There's some light anyway... ;) ) to all those who are having trouble with the power.

from CNN:

Major power outage hits New York, other large cities
Thursday, August 14, 2003 Posted: 4:58 PM EDT (2058 GMT)

People crowd into the streets of Manhattan during the power outage.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW YORK (CNN) -- A major power outage simultaneously struck dozens of cities in the United States and Canada late Thursday afternoon.

Cities affected include New York; Boston, Massachusetts; Cleveland, Ohio; Detroit, Michigan; Toronto, Ontario; and Ottawa, Ontario. The power outage occurred shortly after 4 p.m.

State officials said the Niagara-Mohawk power grid was overloaded. The grid provides power for New York and stretches into Canada. The officials said the outage is a natural occurrence and not related to terrorism.

Much of Midtown Manhattan and Wall Street were shut down. All area airports and the Long Island Railroad were also affected. The airports were operating on back-up power and operations were reported to be normal, officials said.

The New York City Police Department said they were trying to determine what happened.

Thousands of people could be seen leaving buildings and walking into the streets. New York subways were reported stopped and people were trapped in the cars.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There's about 3 hours of daylight left.... Let's hope they get people out of the subways.

I live in suburbs of Akron, in Ne OH. and the place where I work lost power just as I was leaving at 4pm.
I thought it was just a prob at work because everything else around was running(traffic lights, other places of business)
When I got out to my car I called my gf who lives on the edge of Detroit. She was at a tire place and getting her tires checked she said they just lost power there as well. We both thought it was just coincidence, that is until I got home and turned on the tv. I tried to call her but like the tv has said all cell systems are overloaded. Fortunately her car wasnt up on the rack yet. So she'll be able to leave.
Even though it is not terror related, watching the masses leave the cities on tv is bringing back the memories of 9/11.
Hopefully my honey makes it home okay.

We lost power here for a brief minute TWICE. The weird thing is that we have our own electric division in Wallingford, CT and at first I thought it was because I had the washer on and the central a/c is running, the pool is running and so is our pond pump.

But then DH switched on the tv and saw the major outage that was/is affecting the Northeast. So I dunno why we would of been affected.

Also, I am not worried. It is VERY HOT out and lots of people are running electricity and there are millions of people in NY, etc. I don't believe it is any type of sabotage, so I wouldn't be concerned.

Massachusetts is sitting pretty with power but we are bordering this grid and our New England grid has been affected so we'll see.

See, I wish news people would think before speaking. Our news anchor was like, "Earlier today a top al Qaeda operative was captured and now there are major blackouts all across the Northeast."

Now you know why I was getting scared.

We've lost power twice this afternoon but luckily just for a few moments.

I'm sorry for my intense title on the thread. It's just the way our news was reporting it. I mean, we're way over here in Dallas and they break in with a special report telling us all about the major blackout. Sorry if I freaked anyone out, I just got a little scared there for a minute. They are now reporting that it is only a blackout.

I agree with you totally regarding how the news media was reporting this because about a half hour ago my husband called me at work (I'm in Flower Mound) frantic saying "have you seen the news" and then said "look at the news" and hung up on me, he sounded freaked out, guess we all are nowadays with all the crazies running around, never know what's going to happen.

We're still OK in NH too "for the time being" they are saying.

WDWHound...I remember that blackout...and I remember one waaaaaaaay back when I was little, 60's I think??

Checking in from Ashley, OH/ Delaware, OH. We have power. Marion, Oh roughly 20 min north of us is sportic some have power some don't and stated they lost it around 4p. To me it seems as if it's a overload of a transformer since we are suffering 90+ degree heat running A/c etc.

imho, when the news reports things like this sensationally, they are just furthering the terrorist agenda. they make people afraid for no reason.

the media should report the facts. whatever happened to that concept in journalism.

Watching all the people trying to board the ferry reminds me of disney at closing time. What a mess out there. Let's hope the power is back on soon!

My dad's in Manhattan today and he said that it was crazy to have the power go out but the people themselves were pretty calm, just filing out of buildings, etc. He himself walked back to our apt. and filled the bathtub with water and called us to say he's okay.

bumcat, the footage I saw reminded me of Disney too, LOL.
