Major Blackout

When I first heard this I freaked out! I started calling people in NY city, NJ, and PA. it sounds like a lot of confusion in NY! It seems that everyone I know is okay! I've heard that power is out in some parts of NJ and PA too, but I haven't heard where, if this is true.

I guess it's okay to breathe now!:D

I'm in RI...we're fine so far. :)

I was raised by a father who was always yelling "damn news media" at the TV...boy, was he right.

Any distruption in Michigan seem to be limited pretty much to the Detroit area. Grand Rapids TV reports that power flickered in most of western Michigan when the dominoes fell, but that was pretty much it.

Lots of April 04 babies coming I bet
It's too hot up here to generate more heat!;)

We had a power outtage here in Philly within the past day or so, but it was over a small part of the city. originally they thought a water main break caused it, but then they said it was something else, unspecified.

This blackout is being attributed to overloaded power grid 9per ABC news ticker, 6pm EST.

I remember the blackout of 1977, but nothing in the '80s. Still got the power here in Philly! Those who are effected ~ good luck & keep cool!

EDIT: the power outtage in Philly was on Tuesday.

My gf made it home(Detroit) okay!!!!!!!!!!!
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
She said there was no power to any of the traffic lights on her way home. She said there were lots of near accidents because people didnt know to treat the intersections as a 4-way stop:eek:

Glad she made it home okay. It's weird how people seem to forget their drivers ed. when things like this happen.

OK this one falls into the "Blame Canada"s (sorry I couldn't resist!) They're now reporting that it was a Canadian power plant that started the domino effect. I'm in NJ and have power for now, but areas close by have none.

Watching all the people trying to board the ferry reminds me of disney at closing time.

LOL.....thats sooooo true!

Thanks I needed that :D

Another thing that is amusing to me are what the television news people are telling people to do if they have lost power. Um if they have lost power how can they be watching the tv?

Well, I just lived through it, and I blame my husband for the power outage, lol. (see my reply on Shep's thread)

Reporting in from Cleveland.....

Please keep EpcotKilterFan (Debbie) in your thoughts and prayers as I imagine that she is going to be VERY busy tonight as she works for the Cleveland Red Cross.

Our company has a backup generator and it managed to keep our building powered up....for about 20 seconds. I left work at 4:30PM and my 20 minute drive home took over 90 minutes. When I called home, DW Sue told me that the power was still on. For some reason, our house is in a small island here in NE Ohio that did not lose power. According to the local news, there are apparently sections of the power grid in NE Ohio that can be powered by backup generators. So Macedonia (or at least part of Macedonia) has power.

I hope that the power companies rectify the problem soon. We get our water from the City of Cleveland and they are reporting that they only have a 2 hour reserve of fresh water. And the power has been off for 3 hours!!!

The news is reporting that some of the suburbs are getting power and that Toledo is supposed to have power. I wonder how many people got caught on roller coasters at Cedar Point???

I was 10 years old the last time that the Niagara grid brought down the Northeastern section of the United States. I thought that they had fixed that problem.

This is my first time posting here Sorry in advance for mistakes!
My sister and her husband are in Manhattan right now on a long weekend!! My mother and I have been watching the news all afternoon. We finally heard from them just a few minutes ago.
Take a wild quess as to where they were when the power went out!! The top of the Empire State Building:eek: They were told the elevator was not working, but if they walk down just six flights of stairs you can use that elevator. When they got there they were told that the electric was out in the whole building, a few minutes later is was the whole block. They where finally told is was the whole city and they should start walking! It was only 81 flights down to the street!:( When they finally made it out to the street in front of the Empire State Building they walked all the way back to their hotel in Times Square. They rested for a while in the lobby(their room is on the 43rd floor) now they are out walking around and looking for something to eat.
On a brighter note my sister did manage to do some shopping, she bought a purse for $5.00 while out walking on the street.:p
(only my sister would be shopping now)
Christine

lost power in outskirts of (Fenton)Michigan for about 1/2 hour. My DD works at the Hospital in Grand Blanc, she said she saw 4 firetrucks, She thinks one of the elevators got stuck with people in it. She said there were a couple power surges, but everything was fine when she left work. Susan

Ypsilanti michigan lost power. I live an hour NW from there, and the power at home was only out for a minute. The only good thing is I had just started work at 3:30, power went out not too long after that and they sent us home at 5:30

New York metro area now has POWER!!!!!!! The lights actually woke me up lol. 4:15 in the afternoon til 1:15 am on Friday and now its time for bed (without central air still, we're being good and trying not to use too much power right now...though the computer NEVER turns off ;) lol).

HAPPY POWER EVERYONEEEEEEE!!!

Glad the lights are starting to come back on! My dh is a master electrician and builds substations etc here in Maine. He said it could have been something as simple as a squirrel in a transformer! Somehow, I think it was something more!;)

Now I have that song running through my head.

We are getting reports here that it was lightening that hit a power plant in Syracuse NY so the domino effect started in The US. We are also hearing that smoke was seen coming from a plant in Niagara Falls, NY side and that is where it started. We haven't heard anything about it being a Canadian Born problem.

It is just too funny how, when something like this happens, no one will just say "It was our fault and we will make it right".

Thank goodness we have our power on now. We were out from 4:14pm until just before 6am.
Some area in Toronto (we are just west of the city) still don't have power.

Instead of "Blame Canada", we'll have to wait 9 months and see if the song "Love In An Elevator" might be the more appropriate anthem.

BTW - I got to work today (after a 30 minute drive) only to find the parking lot gates locked. It appears that our building didn't get power until 8AM and that we lost water pressure overnight. So today is an "optional" day. I'm not quite sure what that means.

ROFLMAO! Both DH and I were singing "Blame Canada" during the nightly news last night!!!
