i want to send a pecan pie to relatives in pa. will it be okay to just wrap it really well and secure it in a sturdy box? will it spoil? should i mark it as perishable? what do you think?

Pecan pie has eggs in it. I think it would spoil.

I think it would be ok as long as you mark it FRAGILE and send it ASAP after baking it first class so it gets there quickly. It is already pretty cold here so spoiling here isn't likely, outside is FREEZING. I've had a pecan pie on the counter since Thanksgiving we didn't get around to eating yet and it's still perfectly fine. Cooking denatures the proteins in the eggs.

A cousin once sent me pancakes from California to NY. They were mush when they got to me but not spoiled:rotfl:

You can mail it, but if you list it as perishable, they might ask you to mail it overnight. Although even with priority, it should get there within 2 days.

Get a disposable pie tin with a lid. Tape it up well. Saran wrap it well. And put plenty of packing peanuts around it. And label the box well.

I don't know if it will make it without getting tossed around. . . .but feel free to mail me one anyway. I'll just scrape it off the sides of the box. I love pecan pie!

If it were me, I would let my fingers do all the work and not worry about it.

Get on the net and find a good bakery in their area that would deliver a fresh pie to them instead. Call them, arrange and pay for the pie with your visa (or whichever) then sit back and enjoy all the praise for a perfectly delicious pie!

Best wishes.

thanks for the replies. i would overnight mail it if i decided to try this. they like my pie, so i won't be ordering a bakery pie. i'm going to talk to our postmaster and get her opinion.

i mailed them sweet potatoes earlier this year. (not cooked) they made it fine. obvioiusly, this is a different situation.

everyone needs a little something from their southern cousins once in a while.:)

When I was a kid, we used to leave out on the counter MANY things that today "have to be" refrigerated. Pecan pie is one of those things. Admittedly, with five kids in the family, pies didn't last as long as they do at my house today, so spoilage wasn't much of an issue; however, I know we'd have multiple pies on the counter, and they sat out at least 2-3 days.

If you decide to mail the pie, I'd suggest that you plan carefully. Have your mailing items ready, bake the pie in the morning and get it sent out that same day. Let them know that it's on the way and let them know what day it was prepared.

Alternately, you could go "safe" and mail them the main ingredients -- pecans and all the dry ingredients mixed up in a bag -- along with your recipe. Kind of a pecan pie kit.

My friend mailed a Molasses Crumb Cake to her son in college across the state...they double boxed it and wrapped it up really, really well so it wouldn't jiggle inside the box. It arrived in perfect condition.

Can pecan pie be kept un-refrigerated? If so, you should be fine. If it needs to be refrigerated, you should probably try shipping it in dry ice or something.

How about getting some ice packs & pack it around it. I would put it in a tupperware kind of container just to keep it all in one place.

Goode and Company Bar-b-que, you can find them on line. They send Brazos Bottem Pecan Pies anywhere you want. They ship in a wooden box with the quote "You might give some serious thought to thanking your lucky stars that your in Texas". Or you can get the limited edition CCA box.

I can attest that they are almost as good as the pies my Grandmother made.

I don't think it would travel well due to the consistency of the pie. This is not one that I eat so I could be wrong, but I was thinking it was sort of a gelatenous goo under the pecans. I think this would not be stable enough during transport and would be all over the container. But maybe it is more stable than I am thinking.

Not to mention when my DH worked for a major package delivery company, packages marked fragile were often drop kicked by others working there.:scared1:
