Magic Christmas Cruise 2010 (Dec 18th - 29th) **** PART III ****

I had to substitute items on almost half of our FEs :sad1:since I was not able to complete 64 cross stitched bookmarks of the "MAGIC". I am still making them and would like to mail one to anyone that received my substitute FE. Please PM me if you would like a bookmark.:goodvibes

I am more than occasionally on Planet Caryn, but I only saw one bucket on the next to last day. Granted we did not do a lot of onboard activities. Can you believe I only stepped foot in the theater once to see DD6 in Friendship ROCKS!? I digress, but I am in a very happy place right now, rested and relaxed. Thank you DCL, and thank you DIS friends -- Friendship ROCKS indeed. :grouphug:

Caryn

(BTW - we smoked a beef brisket today and used crushed peppercorns, mustard and corriander seed from the Guadeloupe open market -- ZOWIE some strong spice. :scared1::laughing::thumbsup2)

The doll was made by my mom (craftygramma who doesn't make it onto the boards near enough) I will pass that on - she will get a kick out of that:thumbsup2:)

Oh, thanks for letting us know who made that adorable hand made doll! I asked everyone, and I never found out!

Thanks, craftygramma! you are tops with me!

we had a great time even with service not up to par, food hit and miss and getting off the boat (late) with a head cold or sinus infection...

We all know they can and will do better (just consider us a part of the training process)

amazing that even with the complaints i would get right back on and do it again... I think that has a lot to do with all of the great folks we met!

Thank you all! :thumbsup2

me too me too me too!

Our dining team was Alicia from Trinidad and Juan from Colombia. They were pleasant (Alicia was a huge talker, which kept us from getting out of the dining room until way after 10 o'clock - LOL!), but the timing of our service was off several nights. Food was okay, not bad but not great either - except for Palo of course!
Kimberly

We had the same serving team, and we were NOT too happy. I think Alicia was ok, but Juan seemed to still be in training; he never got the hang of bringing water, coffee, soda, etc. Also they didn't seem to like giving us butter for our bread.

I know it's not completely not the fault of the servers, but our food wasn't hot enough. Perhaps it sat around too much.

I am going to write a letter to DCL about the quality of the "Christmas dinner menu". It was terrible! I am not sure what country they got the choices from.......but I ordered the turkey, and it was ok, but the sides and accompaniments were terrible (and cold)

It was great meeting so many of you and I'm sorry I missed the dismeet. Apparently, I um, "celebrated" vacation a little too much the night before:lmao: But those I did meet on board and on shore - you all made it so much fun! Thank you. We didn't participate in the FE, but I understand that the FE really rocked! Great job!

My DD's (Emily & Rachael) had a great time with all their new friends and I'm listening to the older one video chat with someone in NC she met - they talk everyday! )

Dh & I had a good time too but we encountered many of the same service issues that have already been posted.

Our stateroom attendant, Shaka, was fantastic and we had great service in the Prom. Lounge, Sessions, and pretty good in Rockin Bar D. Room service rocked it too!

Our dining room service ranged from pretty bad the first few days to mediocre to oh my gosh this is so much better by the end of the cruise. Most of it was really just poor timing or training or I don't know - but the loss of so many staff to the Dream really, really showed. I'm not that picky - but I was thrilled to actually have silverware before or as my my meal arrived as being an "oh my gosh this is so much better". I gave up on the idea of ever having coffee WITH my dessert :) Our main waiter always made a recommendation of things not on the menu (he had obviously memorized the book but not the menus). Its hard to trust a recommentation of a dish thats not even being served:lmao:. It also seemed to annoy him if I would order an appetizer and a salad. At no time did either of them joke with us, do a magic trick, overindulge or even call one of our daughters princess or sweetie or any of the other things that previous servers have done to make my kids thoroughly enjoy the lengthy dining experience. At no time was there ever an offer to bring extra of something (or a replacement of something not liked) - it just wasn't that special feeling of truly having a magical dining experience.

Many of the things we encountered were small - but over 11 days it really added up - to a "whats going on" type feeling. For instance, the tube that holds the toilet paper in place was missing until that last night of the cruise. The tp just sat on the bathroom counter. Was I going to call gs and complain? no. But it was annoying for the price we paid.

The worst service we encountered was in Topsiders for dinner. We didn't get silverware or anything to drink, not even water - despite asking for it several times. Our dinner plates were never cleared, dessert or coffee were never offered , dh took silverware off another empty table after we sat for 5 mins so we could eat while the food was at least lukewarm. He left at 8:00 to go to tangled with DD and I sat and sat and sat - there were only 3 other tables with people - one of which was done as well and we waited and waited and finally at 8:30 we looked at each other and we got up and left. Several servers and so forth would walk by and cast long looks at our waiter who was still talking with one table but no one stepped in and said - let me take that for you or can I get you something to drink or even gave a little under hint to their buddy. But from that experience I actually complained to someone (this was on the 3rd night ) to our head waiter about the change in the "disney difference" - it made a difference for us in the dining room - our hw would at least stop by every night and make sure we had drinks, silverware and bread for the kids - that made a big difference in our experience. We can wait for a long time and eat cold food (which we did)-but I like the kids to be at least carb loaded :)

Location - we were on Deck 8 for the first time- near several other Diser's and I wouldn't stay on that part of the deck again. The location was great for getting around the ship but my oh my it was loud at times. Our noisy neighbors were certainly not Disney's fault (although I would have appreciated it if they would have taken care of the 3 am jumping off the beds and screaming that went on for over an hour) - but the ping pong tables were over head as was the outside movie nights which were pretty loud until late coupled with the dragging a scrapping sounds that happened with crew set up and cleanup = again no one's fault - but I like it to be quieter when I try to sleep

Dh was also on the Guadeloupe dive and echoed the same sentiments as above- it was completely unorganized and to go to the wrong dive shop and no one knew anything - well - I wish that Disney would have at least acknowledged an Oops!

We love the magic of Disney but I felt like we got a bucket of cold water thrown on us - sort of a "wake up" and take off those rose colored Disney glasses. Its not that we won't travel on DCL again - but this was my 4th DCL holiday cruise and most disappointing. I want to give Disney a chance with the new ships and I do believe with faith, trust and pixie dust, that the Magic of the experience we've always felt onboard will find its way back.

Hi Lisa......Just wanted to introduce myself....I'm Eve, my son Zack is the friend in NC that Emily's talking to. I wish we could have met on the cruise. Your daughter seems very sweet. Anyway just wanted to say Hello!! :goodvibes

I was constinently using the "wave-phone" to check where Justin was.... Not saying that he wasn't loitering in the halls but I don't think he was one that was being loud or obnoxious.. I still think I have the fear of God in in him... :rolleyes1

I have read previous threads about the longer cruises being like that... kids get to know others and start running in packs.. getting a little more rowdy. I reported some several times to DCL folks.. If mine was doing something I would have wanted the same.. :upsidedow

I didn't have an issue with the tweens running in packs---I anticipated a lot of kids would be on the cruise being the holidays and all. My main issue was the type of behavior in addition to the constant running, bumping, and yelling that occured on our floor there were other incidents e.g. one night a bunch of tweens decided to have a dessert buffet on the stairs near our stateroom. Of course they left no room to actually walk up the stairs and just left the dirty dishes right on the stiars when they left. Or the hiding under the BVT table and scaring passengers at midnight. Also, there were a more than a few nights when they were running through the halls at 2am---eeek. It was always tweens and not the teens--at least that we encountered in these siutations.

however, I am pretty sure that Justin was one of the kids I was refering to when I said there were positives like a very nice tween who held open a door when Malia and I were coming back from the mickey pool and was loaded with tons of crap-towels, sunscreen, googles, a toy submarine and the like. So it wasn't all bad-I almost asked him his stateroom so I could tell his parents what a nice young man he was but I thought that might seem odd to a kid that someone wants to know there stateroom and all.

If it makes anyone feel better, I didn't notice the tweens as much on this cruise as we did on the Baltic and we were on Deck 2 down the hall from the tween club on both cruises.

This adds weight to my theory that they didn't have enough fun stuff in their clubs. I think DCL needs to work on this--amongst everything else we have noted.

Yikes-I don't envy their jobs anymore and I agree with many of the comments that the Magic was just not as magical this cruise.

Oh, we had a BAD experience at Topsiders, too. Christmas eve we went to dinner at 6:30, right when they opened. The plan was to be out by 7:45 so we could see the kids carolling.:santa:
We ordered, and didn't get any salads/appetizers. No explanation either, just the server saying: " We are going right to the main course". By this time it was 7:20-7:25 and we were ready to eat something! It was also the same time they brought out the chicken fingers & mac/cheese for the kids. Really?
45 min.s for chicken fingers? There were 3 other tables in there, so I have no idea what was going on in the kitchen, and we never got an answer.
We left at 8, no dessert, missed the singing & walked right into the mayhem of the lobby. Also missed pics with the charactors that night, as it was way to crazy to expect the kids to wait in line after that fiasco dinner.
Lesson learned....

Since my son is 12, he spent a tremendous amount of time in the Edge.
I did not let him carry the wave phone, for fear of damage to it! I did give him times to meet us for movies/shows/dinner, and called the edge a few times to remind him to come back to the cabin. I do not believe he was one of the "roaming tweens", but I am sorry for those cruisers that had a bad experience with them. We were on the 6th floor, and I would see some of them in the elevator area, hanging out.
Joey told me that the counselors had several "talks" with the group about their behavior, and I saw one when I went down to check on him one day.

I agree with the comments about Peter. He wasn't bad by any means but he was just "there." CD's should be a lot more charismatic and, with so very few ships, one would think that the "cream of the crop" would rise to that position.

I don't necessarily agree that we should consider ourselves part of the DCL training process. I've been a trainer for FedEx for 26 years and we don't charge our customers to be part of our training process. If I wanted to help DCL train new staff, they should pay me - it shouldn't be the other way around.

WOW! We've never eaten at Topsiders for dinner and I don't think we'll chance it after your report. Im sorry they gave you such poor service on XMAS eve :(

Yep - saw that one! Wonder how that would compare - a cruise FULL of 7-8-9-10 year old girls! I think that might be too much drama even for me!:scared1:

As the new father to a lil princess: I am just checking onto the entire American Girl Doll stuff....We currently have a Bitty Baby...

I think their stuff makes the Disney stuff look cheap...

As I pack away my Christmas tree, I have to thank all those Diser's that gave us ornaments~I think I will do a "cruise" themed tree next year. :santa:
Love our Christmas "elf" baby, we named him Buddy.
Listening to the cd's yesterday when I wore my DOTD t-shirt did not bring anyone by to offer me a drink, though. (darn!)
Still have candy to eat(thank you, Rump family) and chocolates from our steward.
Has it only been a week since we stepped off the Magic?
Reality starts tomorrow when I go back to work....:sad1:

Wow, that is slow. I never dined at Topsiders and now glad I didn't. I don't like the chaotic atmosphere.

Our main dining servers were really great - Cornwall and Danielo. They chatted and did the magic tricks and the whole thing. Our host was Kapoor and he came over every dinner to ask if anything could be improved. We suggested a few things. He was almost too attentive, but I shouldn't complain about that. One downer was that we were Table #2, which is right at the entrance and as far away from the kitchen as it is possible to be. No way food can stay hot on that long trip!

Thanks again, Dave, for sending me that missing Navigator!

Just did my DCL online survey. I hope they will rapidly correct the areas that need attention. Still, can't wait for my next opportunity to get back on board. My boss is on Castaway Cay today, then is getting on the Dream for his Jan 21 preview cruise!

I agree with most of the observations of others.

1. Peter the CD is a dud! He certainly did nothing to enhance the enjoyment of the cruise

2. The "magic" was missing from our normal DCL experiences. The crew was inexperienced and not able to creat the magic moments that we have come to expect. Our dining experience was OK but not what we have had in the past.

3. Topsiders was horrible. We were told there would be a 30 minute wait and the majority of tables were empty. When I was a little more demanding to the manager we were seated and served but watched as many people were turned away. I asked the manager why they were turning people away and he told me it was his discretion as to how many people should be served. I told him that if there was an empty table and a guest wanted to eat there they should be seated and served immediately. He became quite rude and huffed off.....but didn't seat anyone else.

4. The tween age kids were brats and slobs. Leaving food and dishes everywhere, running around and makin noise. Parents should be in control but DCL should bring it to their attention.

5. We were on deck 2 with the loud banging every night (for the first 4 nights) and it took guest services 4 days to acknowledge the problem only after all the poeple in the hall complained.

6. We enjoyed the cruise and had a great time but as I put on my comment card, it was a "very average" cruise and I expect more from DCL. (this was our 4th DCL cruise)

Although venting on the Disboard is helpful, I wish we had confirmation the DCL hears what is being said here and on the comment cards. I would expect a call or email based on a comment that the manager of Topsiders was rude but I have to believe that DCL looks at the comments and just dismisses them as long as you checked the box that you would consider sailing with DCL again. We will sail with them again but I hope Peter is not the CD (we've had hime twice) and I just hope this was an exception to normal experience that we should expect.

Funny story....we were walking by the table outside the theater when the kids underneath starting making smart a$$ comments. I grabbed the table and shook it and scared the kids underneath. It was pretty funny to see their faces and then they ran away.

Just my thoughts.......

We only ate at Topsiders once, and it was a couple years ago, when we had.....um......REALLY 'different' table mates :rolleyes1:eek: with whom we were not interested in sitting alone with (the other part of our party was going to be at Palo). ANYWAY.....we had a fabulous meal, and as far as I recall, wonderful service. I remember being very surprised that it was sit down, tablecloths, menus, the whole sha-bang! I'm sorry to hear it was not handled as well this cruise. Add it to the list of growing pains, I guess. :sad2:

Bravo! All I could manage was a few expletives.
