Magic Christmas Cruise 2010 (Dec 18th - 29th) - PART II

No flames here.
My ds 13 agreed to a tie with a polo shirt so I could have a christmas photo but he will not be dressing up either and sometimes he will go to dinner and sometimes he wont. The other 2 ds's go when they want also. We are open minded too and look at it that its their cruise/christmas also and what we enjoy is very different from a teens point of view. All I ask is that they are there for christmas dinner to say merry christmas to the servers and open our crackers and they are happy to do this then go off on their own.I still dress formal because I love my dresses and my ds 3 is too young to care!

No flames here, either. I really don't know what my DH is going to do. I am not exaggerating when I say ALL (with one exception, see below) he owns is grey Fruit of the Loom t-shirts and blue jeans. He works seven days a week and this is his "uniform." To him--again, not an exaggeration--dressing up is the BLACK FotL tee shirt he bought at Walmart. ONE black tee shirt. (I guess that is what he will wear for pirate night). He bought a suit four years ago for a funeral/last cruise (double duty!) and hasn't had it on since, not even sure if he moved it out of his closet when we moved last year. He does NOT want to dress for dinner. I told him NO jeans in the dining rooms, so I hope he will at least go get some khakis or dress slacks and maybe a nice shirt or two before we go. I can pretty much guarantee you he won't be in a tie or a suit coat. He works much harder than me and probably harder than anyone I know, so I'm not gonna begrudge him if he doesn't want to get all doodied up on his once-every-four-years vacation. I'm just happy he's willing to go at all.

He won't look like a bum but he won't be uncomfortably constricted, either.

*puts fire breathing dragon back in his cave* FLAMES you say!?
WHERE!?

No, on a more serious note..no need to worry about it. Dress how ya'll wanna dress, imo. As for me and my family we are dressing up for the formal nights, that doesn't mean EVERYONE has to. Everyone does their vacations differently, Some, like your DH, work work work work, and don't really know what a life is, cause their jobs treat them like peons. So if he wants to show up in a black t-shirt and khakis..who cares..he's comfy. And I'm happy for him.

I did forget to mention that aspect of our decision - my DH also works very hard and has to be well dressed at work. So for him, to wear a suit etc on vacation, makes him feel like he is wearing work clothes. I feel like when I see him he is on work clothes on a cruise. My kids wear a uniform to school - so I can see their point of view too.

Maybe one day they will say - if you don't want to dress up, eat in this half of the dining room.

Its not like we are slobs - i would say resort style is more what we have in mind.

I bet you will look great. Possibly a little pale from living so close to the Arctic Circle, but dressed just fine. :thumbsup2

IMO, this is vacation and should be set up for maximum enjoyment and relaxation. Some people like to get dressed up, some don't - for lots of different reasons. I, for one, may not be dressing up on the first formal night b/c my dress might not fit :rotfl:. And I might just be too relaxed to deal with the Spanx!

But since Caryn brought up being pale...does anyone get a spray tan pre cruise?

Looked at the Spanx. Looked at the Yummie Tummie. I'll never get to leave the cabin just trying to get those things pulled up.
Caftans-R-Us, here I come.

I got a caftan!!! I think it's now called a "maxi dress", but when you are 60" tall like me, it's definitely a caftan! Not sure what I was thinking when I got it...but the cruise is ther perfect time to "rock" it.:woohoo:

I work in a gym where there is also a sunbed so I am going on just before my shift once a week for the next few weeks. Would love a spray tan but cant beat havingsomething for nothing.:rolleyes1

I will be sporting what is left of my Farmer's Tan. What is pale is shockingly so.

I  the maxi dress.

Personally, I don't care what other people are wearing. It's vacation. I'd be happy to wear shorts 24 x 7. That being said...I have my mix and match cruise wardrobe I pull out every cruise. I stopped worrying about clothes about 3 cruises ago.

I realize that some folks are more into clothes...go for it. Have fun. Whatever makes you happy! Me...I'll be wearing the same outfit I wore last cruise!

I know when I mention cruising to my Mom the first thing she does is start stressing about what she is going to wear. It's a waste of time and energy.

I dress to blend in. I won't be the most dressed up guest at the party and likewise, I won't be the most casual.

However, if you have cruised with me before, you will probably recognize my outfit!

We will be pale - you are right. But - its been sunny and gorgeous up here for the last week. Almost 70 yesterday!

Does anyone know who is the cruise director on the Magic now?

The first is "The Last Days of St Pierre" by Ernest Zebrowski. I really enjoyed that one a lot - talked a lot about what the islands were like at the turn of the century. The other book is La Catastophe by Alwyn Scarth. trying to read it now, might not be as good.

I also read a book by Carrolly Erickson (I think about Josephine Bonaparte.) It talked a lot about her early life on Martinique...and what a pill she was!!

I just bought the Last Days of St Pierre and the Carrolly Erickson book on Josephine on my Kindle! What a great idea and thanks so much!

Anyone else have good books on our islands they recommend?

So flame away! We really like to be relaxed on vacation.

It is more important to be happy and comfortable and it is not hard to dress up a bit and still not wear a coat and tie.

It is nice to see everyone dressed up for special occasions like formal night. We have more fun in an elegant setting when we are appropriately decked out and that's what we will do, but I don't begrudge anyone who isn't into that.

Note: My avatar pic was taken at Palo on our first Disney Cruise, and as you see, I did not have a tie on that cruise and that was just fine.

I was just watching a video on youtube (yes, I need to be changing the cat litter, among other things, but this cruise is consuming me. Why do you ask?) about a family that upgraded at port to the Roy suite, surpising his kids. Not that I will be doing that, but I was just wondering if anybody knows if the Roy and Walt suites are booked for this trip?

Yep, they are! We are in a category three and have been on the waitlist for a one or two since day one of booking! I'm guessing that those are nearly always booked for Christmas cruises. We normally don't cruise concierge-level but decided to splurge with it being Christmas (and because we had two years to save up). :goodvibes
