I don't know if this will interest anyone, but I thought it was cool!

As most of you know, I am a university student studying history. In the last year of university (which I scarily am in now!) almost all student have to do a research lead essay on a topic, usually between 8000 and 12000 words (luckily mine is only 8000)

Anyway my topic (about love and relationships in 1950's Britain) means I spend a lot of time in my University archives going through anything that might be relevant (and there is a lot! My university holds a lot of social surveys!)

Anyway I was reading through some old copies of 'Woman and Home' magazine from the 1950's, mostly the problem pages and seeing what was typical. Anyway whilst flicking through my eye caught the word 'Disney' as it usually does. Not only did I find a review of Cinderella from 1951, but I also found that Diane Disney Miller had written about 6 articles on her dad in 1957/58 under the title 'My Father, Walt Disney', all about his life, which was amazing coming from her perspective. Each article had a different focus, such as how her mother and father fell in love, what their home life was like, how her dad's business started. It was fascinating!

I am not sure if I will be able to make copies, as my university has very strict rules about what can and cannot be published, even online. However it was just so interesting that this sort of thing was written whilst Walt was alive, and a lot of her thoughts and memories of him.

I spend about an hour reading all the articles after I had finished with my research for the day! :rolleyes1

Those are the little things that made me say I want to be an archivist. You never knew what you were going to find.

Does anybody know if she actually wrote those articles? I could be totally wrong, but I thought they were written with help from a journalist who ultimately hoped to do a biography on Walt?

How neat! See....you find Disney in the oddest places :)

Your research topic sounds pretty interesting too! How did you decide to do it on that?

If you ever get a chance to come visit us on the west coast,
stop by the Disney Family Museum in San Francisco.

The love and care that brought the project together are in every room.

My DH and I are taking a little road trip down to San Francisco this summer and the Disney Family Museum is on the top of our "to do" list! We're excited to walk through it! :goodvibes

Kate - What a great find! :thumbsup2

I listened to the download of the Walt Disney museum from the Podcast yesterday.....makes me anxious to go to San Francisco! Maybe in a few years

I just emailed Woman and Home magazine making an inquiry on if they could possibly send me the articles electronically or otherwise. I will let you know if I get a response. :)

Ok, I have just realised I made a mistake! I am so embarrsed!! It is 'Women's Own' magazine, not Woman and Home! I am so sorry! I have been looking at both, but that was the magazine I got it from! I am sooo sorry!!

I am going in again on Monday, and I will ask if I can make digital copies. I can hope!

I don't *think* this is a U.S. publication at all. I have never heard of it. So hopefully I emailed the correct place. :) Hope to read it soon!

I've just returned to college and I've found myself asking about each paper assigned "How can I make this about Disney?" :)

That's awesome that you found that stuff. I'm going to try to make it to the museum in August. Maybe I'll post a mini trip report.
