Mad Men Discussion Thread

My take on Betty and the house isn't that she's doing it to stick it to Don. I think that she thinks that after all he put her through that she deserved that house, and the fact that Henry insisted on signing it away in the divorce settlement is almost immaterial IHO. (I'm thinking that she went along with a lot that Henry asked for so that she would be assured of an immediate soft landing, and I'm betting that she doesn't intend to follow through on half of it.)

The more I've thought about it since last night, I've come to the conclusion that I *totally* mis-judged Henry's motives last year. Now that I've seen his mother I'm inclined to believe that he's got one heck of an issue with a Madonna complex. The pretty-pregnant-lady-in-white-lace thing must have been like a bomb going off in his head.

I apologize. I asked a question about Betty and the house, then went back and read this and realized you had addressed it.

She did look incredibly beautiful in that white dress, and he did seem in absolute awe.

Oh, no offense taken -- I assumed that you were asking the question in general, to see what everyone else thought.:)

Do any of you remember last season when Don saw Sally's teacher for the first time and he took his hand and touched the ground under his chair? I always thought that would come back and they would explain what that meant. I remember him telling Betty to relax (I think) when she was pregnant and he told her to envision a scene where touching the ground or something similar was taking place. I never did know what that meant in regards to the teacher.

I love MM. This season should be fun with Henry's mother. If Betty wanted inlaws, she got them. Henry's mother has Betty's number. I love it when she said to Henry something to the effect of living with anothers man's dirt. Oh, boy she is something. I never heard that expression before. I also visit amc MM site, the have a really active talk forum & imbd MM is very good too. I guess I can't get enough. What happened to "MissFarrell" ? I am starting to like Pete this season. He was very respectful to the reporter interviewing Don, by thanking him for his sacrifice.

I love that Henry's mother immediately noticed Betty's children were 'terrified of her.' She's such a horrible mother. If Don wasn't so distant, I'd wish for him to take the kids but alas, that never happened back then.

Henry at age 50-ish, has a mommy complex. Do we even know what happened to Henry's first spouse? We know he has a grown daughter.

Loved how Peggy got very take charge. Watched the new episode yet again (3x now!) and love the new copyright/artist that is under her employ. I also noticed that Peggy is getting a more complete wardrobe while Harry Crane looked like an idiot! Loved Joans blue/white pleated dress.

I will say, there was no Trudy in this episode.. I do like her and the way she says "Peter" in a long drawn out affluent way..

Don is very defeated. I honestly don't think he feels anything-- hence the slapping with the paid "date". The fact that the slapping is his usual-speaks volumes about his despair and emptiness. Maybe he wanted the slap treatment fromm Betty and couldn't get it from his nice refined Main Line wife.

There was no Jane.. thank goodness.. she's an idiot.

Not exactly how to read Pete this season. I noticed he was kind to the Ad Age reporter while Roger was making invalid jokes. I also noticed he kept Roger to a schedule at the restaurant.. no drinks now type of thing. It was very telling when they said Lucky Strike is 71% of the revenue. We all know what Lucky Strike wants, Lucky Strike gets (the firing of Sal Ramono comes to mind)

I do miss Ken Cosgrove and Sal Romano characters. I would love to see Sal back.. he was so amazing!

Gosh-Dan is a cad-sleeping with his secretary and blowing it all over.

The head guy from Lucky Strike is a complete A S S !!:sad2:

A really dark episode

I wonder who had to clean up all of that mess throughout the Draper/Francis house.

Carla, I bet. I can't see Betty doing it. She'd make Sally do it before she started wiping eggs off the cabinets.

Not a smart move sleeping with the secretary you have to work with every day. I wonder if Allison is going to last as Don's secretary.

You *know* that Betty left it for Carla to clean up. I wonder how much more we're going to see of Sally's little hoodlum friend, Glen. Have we seen him before? I can't seem to place him, but he referenced his mom knowing (of) Betty.

Happy to see a clean-and-sober Freddy Rumson back...although I suspect that he'll fall off the wagon at some point. Did you see the looks he got every time he declined a drink?!

I'm hoping this thing with Don's drinking to excess is just related to the holidays. Drunken, pathetic Don isn't half as exciting as take-charge Don. I was kind of surprised at how drunk they portrayed him during the whole losing his keys/sex with his secretary thing because he seemed relatively fine towards the end of the office party, when he was talking to that consultant.

And hey...how 'bout that conga line?! Can't wait to try that out at my next company holiday party! :woohoo:

PS - also happy to see the show finally acknowledge the existence of the Beatles. Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Wasn't there an earlier episode with Glen and Betty, where Glen was acting all weird around her,a s if he had a crush on her? My memory is a little fuzzy.

Oh, it was way more than that. A couple of years back, Betty was treating Glen as if he were a male friend her own age, or rather, as if she were his age; like they were buddies. At one point he ran away from home, and Betty found him hiding in Sally's outdoor playhouse; he'd been living there for several days. She didn't tell anyone where she found him, and she let him hang out at the house all day, watching TV, eating, and wearing some of Don's clothes while she washed his. She finally took him home late in the afternoon, and his mother was absolutely LIVID -- she made it very clear that she was suspicious of their relationship, and Betty was warned to stay away from Glen.

I don't think that Betty really realized what a monster she had created (Among other things, Glen asked for a lock of Betty's hair, and she gave it to him), but Glen developed a serious obsession with her, and his mother (Helen Bishop) knew it. I'm guessing that he's furious that Betty married someone else when she got divorced, so now he's transferring the obsession to Sally, who looks so much like her mom. Whatever else, the one thing that you can bet is that this subplot is going to bring out Ugly Betty.

PS: I think that the return of Freddy is meant partly as contrast. Don is beginning to look very like Freddy did in the old days; passing out every night. I think that the situation with Allison is that he knows that he did something in regard to her that he should not have, but does not remember exactly what it was -- I don't think that he remembers the sex. He was buttoned up when he passed out on the couch, so he remembers the business of the keys, but not much beyond that. There was no trace of her in the flat when he woke up -- not like he found a brassiere on the floor or something like that.

Glen was in season 1, and he had a strange relationship with Betty! He used to run away from home and come over to Betty's house and watch tv with her while the kids were in school. He would hold her hand sometimes, too. I'm not saying it was inappropriate but she would talk to him about her life, etc. It was strange. It was a friendship type relationship. She called his mom after he ran away once and they haven't spoken since, I don't think. He was mad at her for doing that.

I LOVE your insight! :)

She called his mom after he ran away once and they haven't spoken since, I don't think. He was mad at her for doing that.

They spoke, briefly, in the Post Office parking lot sometime in Season 2. Glen was waiting in the car for his mom and Betty went up to the car window and said hello. He told her something like, "My mom says I'm not supposed to talk to you."

The idea of "gifts" was just so amazing here.. It opens with the idea of Christmas giving, with Alison reading the Santa letter aloud to Don.

Without sounding graphic, Peggy's idea of "saving the gift of herself" to her boyfriend in the beginning of the episode was just so strong. Early viewers know what Peggy really went through.. if you also remember on Season 1, Episode 1, Joan sends Peggy to an ob-gyn as part of the "work physical".. this "gift" was supposed or implied to be given out to the male executives.

Lee Garner Jr.. and his Polariod gift.. the party was just too much and so out of character for SCDP.. that type of party was a Sterling and Cooper old boys club party. The whole party was just a farce for the high end client. The gifts of cartons of Lucky Strikes to employees was just hysterical.
The "red dress" that Joan wore also implied a gift.. if you understood the history between Joan and Roger that was a HUGE moment.
Think about Alison and her "gift" to Don. That was just so awkward and very awkward on one hand and expected in the other.

Notice Glenn's gift (keychain) to Sally. Glenn has a history (since season 1) with Betty. This obsessive behavior has switched from Betty to Sally. Betty gave a lock of her hair to Glenn way back when.

Don's neighbor, phoebe tries to give the gift of friendship to Don.. however he refuses.

Flash to the end, when Peggy gives "herself" to the boyfriend.

Freddy has the gift of sobriety.. but he is still old fashioned Freddy.

Refresh my memory - who is Anna in California to Don "Dick"........

The mind is a fragile thing:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Anna was married to the real Don Draper. She looked him up after he returned from Korea and he has suported her all this time. She gave him a divorce when he met and wanted to marry Betty but he has always stayed in touch with her. She is the only one that knew exactly who he was.

It is so sad that she is ill. He is such a different guy around her.
