Low Carb Diet

Just checking in to see how you fellow low carbers are doing :)

I have always bounced between Sugar Busters and Atkins. Love them both. I always felt that South Beach plagerized Sugar Busters.

It is impossible. NO diet is NO carbs. Practically everything has carbs in it. Other than meat, some vegtables (broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce) are very low in carbs. But you have to be careful, some are high in carbs (corn, carrots, etc.) Even the strictest of low carb diets have you eating at least 20 carbs a day. You need some "good" carbs to be healthy :)

If you want to eat low carb, the best thing to do is get yourself a book (most libraries even have them) and really read up on the way of eating before you start. I prefer Atkins but many others also like South Beach. We can provide lots of helpful hints but to really understand this way of eating you really should understand more about why you eat this way and how different foods have different effects :)

The "good carbs" thing is a myth, actually, if you read the research of Steffanson (sp?) or the writings of Owsley "Bear" Stanley.

Here's a good place to find out about No Carbing: (tough, but MAN does it work!): http://activenocarber.myfreeforum.org/

Carbs taste good and are bad for you. Heroin feels good and is bad for you. Both are addictive to the point of being deadly, they just kill you two different ways.

I am on day 4 and doing great! I am doing induction (atkins) am staying as close to 0 carbs as possible. I am betting I have less than 8 a day and some of those come from whipped cream on my sugar free jello and some half and half for my coffee. :thumbsup2

I have 10-15lbs to lose, and I'm hoping I can have most of it gone in a month. I am staying on induction for the 2 weeks and will then start to add a few good carbs back in...but I am definitely staying away from all sugars.

Oh...and happy to report that I have had NO cravings and haven't felt hungry. I have been drinking one diet A&W root beer a day for a treat. It's nice for something a little sweet.

I agree...I tried to do South Beach once and actually find Atkins to be easier for me to follow.

You want good Atkins? Get a copy of his ORIGINAL diet, from 1972.

After he got bought out, suddenly frankenfoods, grains and plants are good? Um, I don't think so.

For those having a hard time finding breakfast goodies that are low-carb:

I like to use ground flax in place of oatmeal or cream of wheat. Low carb, has fiber and full of omega-3 fatty acids.

I found a recipe on a website that I adapted to my own tastes. Take 1/4 cup of ground flax and mix with 1/2 cup hot water. Add a tablespoon or two of peanut butter and mix well. Add 1/2 cup or fresh blackberries or blueberries if you're in the right phase of your low-carb regimen. I love it. Tastes like a peanut butter and jelly treat!

I like celery and peanut butter for breakfast. I know it is weird but it tastes good.
Down from 187.5 to 179 and insulin is down by 50%. Still have a long way to go but I've been obese for many years so I know it will take time to get down to 100 pounds or less.

That was me to. I tried SBD, but found that Atkins was much easier to follow. It's nice to see so many low-carbers around. And they say low carb is dead...............

Another low carb question.............I'm going to start this on Tuesday (have a birthday party for a friend Monday night ;) ) and decided to do Atkins....just seems easier to me. Now, I'm allowed 20 carbs a day, right---does it matter when or where they come from?? I'm not a big meat eater, so I'm not really looking forward to it. And I like my wine at might, and that'll be really tough..........
Anyway, if I find milk with 5 grams per cup, I can have a cup of that, along with my 15 other carbs a day?? I just don't want to be stuck with steak and broccoli for 2 weeks.

Also, is 20 carbs a day the only way to go?? Has anyone lost weight by just cutting back carbs or is the key to loosing weight the 20 carb maximum? I need to loose about 10 pounds by the end of June...........thanks all so much!

ETA--is low carb bread allowed?? I read "Bread is Bad"---what about low carb bread??

I'm so glad to find this thread! :)

I've been on S.B. since Mar.. I've lost 11 pounds and would like to continue. I stopped being strict with it for a few days when I visited a very good cook. So I'm going back on restriction.

I love the South Beach cereal! Love it. Has a slightly sweet flavor and lots of texture. It's expensive, but worth it. Low carb, low sugar, tastes great. It was really hard to find for awhile (for me anyway). Lately it hasn't been a problem. I eat the cereal for any meal if I have a craving for it.

For breakfast, I usually eat the S.B. cereal or hard boiled eggs, with about a palm full of cashews, and some cheese cubes. Then I'm set till lunch. Lunch- I like the S.B. wraps, or a wrap I make, salads, chili, tacos. Dinner- grilled meats, veggies or a salad, or a wrap.

Have you guys tried Carb Smart ice cream? Oh my goodness. It is sooo good! Love it. I also like the individual containers of no fat, no sugar added pudding and I like to add about a palm full of semi-sweet chocolate chips. It tastes like you are really eating something! Great for those days you have a craving for sweets. That's my big weakness. Another weakness I have is potatoes & bread. I love ff, but I've been off the stuff since Mar. and don't really miss it. I'll grab a ff from family or a friend now and then, but that's it. Nuts have pretty much taken their place. Bread, I'll eat one slice with a meal now and then.

I have a suggestion. How about a thread about, "What's for Dinner- Low Carb?"! I think it'd be fun and inspirational. :)

ETA- Thanks for all of the links! I can't wait to look through them all!

In the beginning I was very strict. Probably for a couple of months. Lots of meat, fish and good veggies. Lots of eggs and bacon. Lots of salads with chicken or tuna. Water and coffee with Splenda and diet iced tea. I tried to avoid the low carb sweets back then. I tried to avoid the lunch meats.

Then I started adding low carb sweets, low carb breads, diet sodas, low carb pasta. I've even had alcohol drinks at parties. They can be low carb so you won't gain but alcohol does slow down weight loss. I didn't start splurging on drinks till about 4 months into it.

I just try to avoid high carb foods and eat low carb foods as best I can without counting. I don't think I ever counted, not even in the beginning.

Good luck!

Giving us a bump so we can check in! :thumbsup2

I am down 5lbs in one week and the cravings are gone! Sugar free jello is my new best friend.

I had left over chicken for breakfast, after I got back from the gym. I stopped at McDonalds and had my lunch of a double cheese burger, no bun. They were very nice a put it on a lettuce leaf in a plastic dish. Dinner was steak, asparagus and salad, with 1 glass of red wine. I am not hungry and I am going to bed. Nighty night!

I did my own modified lower fat version of Atkins for a long time and I felt really good on it. The only reason I stopped was due to cost and because I became burned out on salads. At the time, the low fat side of it was of more importance so I had to start eating carbs again.

I'd like to get back into Atkins and stay there. I would eat some eggs occasionally, lean meat usually sliced over salads with all kinds of veggies and minimal salad dressing. I ate a lot of steamed veggies and stir fries too.

My treat of choice was a few pecans now and then and a slice of really good cheese. I was really sorry to stop this lifestyle. :(

:surfweb:

I knew I had turned a corner when I had made a cake for a family member and didn't want to lick the leftover frosting or have a peice later. :)

I really like the S.B. wrap lunches. It's a lot of food! I usually only want one wrap and I'm satisfied.

Low carb is a great way to lose weight. We have been on low carb here since just after the first of the year. DH has been "better" about it than I have. Much better. He has lost 35#. I have only lost 12.
I eat more than he does ;)

We did south beach a couple of years ago. But it is just too hard for us to stick to.

I started back on low carbing yesterday. So far so good.
