LOVED BLT - BCV was a bad experience

We just came back from 6 nights in a 2 bdrm and a 1 bdrm. We brought down our family and 8 others for a grand total of 13 of us over the 2 units.

The units were both clean, functional, had tons of storage, and a pleasure to stay in. Our guests were open-jawed about the space and amenities. The rooms were very large and open with tons of light. The bathrooms off the bedrooms were spacious. The only damage at all was:

1 stain on the arm of the couch.
2 areas of water damage near the edge of the shower that appeared to have been repainted.

That's it. All the furnishings were in good order, and clean.

We had pool views (very pretty) and a lake view (stunning view of the marina).

While busses picked up other resorts after us, we were the first drop-off on the way home. Unfortunately, on the ME bus we were last drop-off and the first to be picked-up, adding about 30-45 minutes to the experience each way.

The Electric Water Pageant was loud - other than that no sound penetrated the unit at all. We couldn't hear toilets flushing or noise in the hallways.

Overall, it felt comfortable, spacious and well-appointed. Loved the location!!!!

On the other hand, we were expecting to be wowed by the Beach Club Villas and had intended to buy points there after our stay. I can't comment on Stormalong Bay as we didn't swim and I know that is a major draw for the resort, but the room was awful.

Walking down the hallway the carpet was dirty and dingy. Our room (1 bdrm) carpet was also dirty, with red stains on the carpet (spaghetti sauce?!) and a large brown smudge of ?food on the wall- both obvious. The room looked tired. It reminded me of a Florida economy apartment. I missed the extra bathroom of BLT and the sleeper chair.

As we are new to DVC we didn't know that the room only sleeps 4 comfortably. When we booked the room through member services we asked if it slept 5 and was told yes. I didn't know that the room allowance was 5 yet there wasn't actually beds for 5 people. It wasn't explained to me and we had three very tired children so sorting out who didn't get a bed was stressful. I will take some of the blame for that for not knowing, but it would have been great if MS had told me the configuration of the room, especially since we are new and explained why we were staying only one night (as we were unfamiliar with the rooms at BCV and wanted to buy points there). We aren't well-versed enough to have known that the amenities are very different among 1 bdrm units. We assumed, wrongly, that they were standardized. It wasn't a huge deal, and if the room was otherwise great, it could be ok.

When the couch was pulled out it was tight in the room. They layout was less thought-out. The kids, unprompted, said they didn't want to stay there the minute we were in the room. That is unusual for our kids as they are easy going and have traveled a fair amount, including to economy motels without complaint. It really was that dingy and unappealing to us.

When we called down to the desk to give feedback about the room we were told we were SOL as there was no DVC person available after 9pm and that the front desk was unable to help us as "DVC booked the room". They offered us a $15/night air mattress.

We put our heads down for the night, and left as soon as possible in the morning.

I was soooo disappointed as we knew how great Stormalong Bay is and wanted points there, but the room was so unappealing that my DH and I agreed that we would not want to stay in the room, even with SAB in the equation.

(Just fwiw, it isn't a style thing: we don't care for modern furnishings, and tend towards more family-style items for our house. BLT won us over with spaciousness, light, cleanliness and function.)

Anyway, that is our experience: we were expecting to be let down by BLT and wowed by BCV. Funny how it was the inverse!

Hope this is helpful.

Just for future trips, while MS allows 5 in one br, you are expected to provide bedding for the fifth person. Many people bring an air mattress for this. The only resorts with the sleeper chair are AKV (but not values), BLT, and OKW. The others are too small for the sleeper chair.

it's great that you stayed at BCV before you bought!

WOW, i am surprised to hear that they basically said not their problem and that you needed to go through MS. We've always contacted the front desk if there was a problem and been switched rooms ect.

I would not have been happy to hear that "DVC booked the room, so there is nothing we can do." There is no one to talk to? Is the resort completely booked?

BCV is a DVC resort. I'm pretty easy going about things, but this just would not have been an acceptable answer, unless the resort was 100% filled. They can't create a room if one doesn't exist, but moving to another resort could be an option.

Thank you for your review of BCV. We have stayed at BLT (as non-DVC owners - I WISH I could've persuaded my DH to become DVC members, but that's for another post!) and totally loved it there. We still want to stay there this year on a cash reservation, but without a discount, cannot afford to do it! I have been looking at other BWV or BCV as alternatives because of possibly a better discount. I am still not convinced to book there (yet).

Glad you liked BLT but sorry you didn't enjoy BCV. Here is my opinion.......even though you didn't much care for the room at BCV, I don't think you got to experience all the great things about actually staying at BCV. Stormalong Bay is super fun for kids! And, being able to walk out your door and easily head over to EPCOT and the Boardwalk area is truly wonderful. The ease of staying at BCV is what we especially loved.

Have you thought about trying Kidani next time? Our friends and their large family just stayed there and LOVED it. Sounds like they may have the space you desire in your villa.

Thanks for sharing about your trip!

...As we are new to DVC we didn't know that the room only sleeps 4 comfortably. When we booked the room through member services we asked if it slept 5 and was told yes. ...

And that is the problem with allowing five in a villa that only sleeps four. Should never have been allowed.

My family had the same reaction, and sounds like we did the same order too - went from a HUGE, great vibe 2 bedroom at kidani to a one bedroom at BCV that just felt cramped and worn. Makes me wonder if we would have enjoyed it more if we started at BCV first, so our bar wasn't set so high for space and amenities.... just a thought. Was nice to walk to Epcot and HS though.

I can see that, BLT blew us away as well. We cant really compare the room at BCV to BLT even if super clean. But we still enjoy SAB and the location to EPCOT too much to choose our entire stay at BLT-so we split between them and its alway awesome. Thanks for the review.

We are BCV owners, but my last stay was at BLT 16 months ago, and my trip next month is also at BLT. We love BLT! A big draw for us is walking into MK. Driving there from another resort is annoying, and taking the bus almost impossible for me when it is only me and DS (special needs adult, had a heavy large collapsible Convaid chair).

As long time BCV owners, we have always loved BCV. It is so pretty, close to Epcot and all the Boardwalk amenities. The gift shop, all the sitting areas in the lobby. We like SAB but it is not a huge draw for us like it is for most others (we like the clown slide at BWV better :rotfl:) That said, I am sad to hear of the conditions at BCV you witnessed. I agree with others, that 5+ should only stay in the 1BR units that have the 2 bathrooms and the sleeper chair..... just my opinion. (Kidani and BLT?)

I always think when I use my BCV points elsewhere, it opens up BCV for others who want to stay there so much.

I hate to hear that you were so unhappy there. We just love Beach Club. I have stayed in all three categories. I do know that on one trip we started in a One Bedroom at BCV's to a Studio at BWV then had a cash stay at Wilderness Lodge. I can't tell you how bad the room at Wilderness Lodge was, and I use to love the hotel portion of this property. I think it had something to do with going big to small. We were only two people. I would not put 5 in a one bedroom, but I know many do.
We have put 9 in a two bedroom at Kidani and it is a lot. But we make it doable.

That's what happens when you move from one of the newest resorts to an older DVC resort. I'm not making excuses, however, they are making them better these days. Certainly in regards to space and layout, the newer resorts are better. We love BCV. It's location helps us overlook some of the aesthetic deficiencies it has. I would love to stay at BLT sometime, though!

Our recent stay at BCV was pretty much the same. The carpet was stained and dirty, the furniture damaged, to the point the chest in the Master Bedroom kept falling apart when you tried to sit anything on it and the couch was stained.

I actually took a cloth and cleaned up a good bit of the stains on the couch which makes me wonder why housekeeping can't do the same. :confused3

Also I will never ever understand guests that spill things and leave it. :sad2:

Since DVC villas do not get daily housekeeping you would hope that everyone would clean up after themselves but obviously not.

I agree with you, Sammie. Accidents can happen, but how difficult is it to clean up a mess your family makes or at least call Housekeeping to get something to clean it up with? The people who allow their small children to write on the furniture or walls with crayons and pens are a puzzle to me, too.

I have unfortunately been reading some bad reviews about BCV. We are making our first trip there in March and are very excited. We are BLT owners and actually have only stayed there once (going again in May). We love BLT, but are very excited about trying BCV.

Here's what I'm expecting. We have stayed at Boardwalk, OKW and SSR. From the pics, the rooms appear to be pretty much the same. So as long as the room is not dirty, I think we will just be excited about SAB and access to BW and Epcot and HS!!

We love both BLT and BCV, the rooms are sooo much nicer at BLT. Overall, taking the whole resort and the room into account, we prefer BCV any day. I agree with the previous poster that it's too bad that you really didn't get a chance to experience the resort as a whole, but I am glad you liked BLT. To us it feels like we are staying in an airport, a really nice airport, but as a whole it really doesn't feel like a resort, unlike BCV, which we thought was so fun and more like a resort.

Instead of spending money on Dee Vee Cee, maybe they need a public service cartoon on the DVC channel in the rooms showing a good DVC member, versus a bad one. One that cleans up after themselves, does not allow marking of the furniture, jumping on the beds, etc. Use the Disney characters. :thumbsup2

Like those old cartoons Goofy used to do about driving. :rotfl2:
