LOST SEASON 3 **Official** Discussion/Speculation Thread (No Spoilers)

Did it also seem to you that Ben knew that Locke was going to blow up the sub and didn't object? That's the sense that I got.

I want to rewatch that episode. I should rewatch them all, especially if Ben is involved. I'm pretty good at reading people (all those comm classes finally come in handy - especially nonverbal - college degree so I can analyze characters on a TV show, LOL!) but there's SO much going on in any given show that I can't really focus on behavior and the way they speak like I need to. Rewatching that little scene, it honestly seemed like Ben didn't want the sub blown up. Ben doesn't really falter his words and the "no" he squeaked out definitely sounded like he was caught off guard and trying to cover. I need to see the rest of the episode and how his behavior changes. After seeing that part again I almost want to say that he didn't want Locke to blow the sub up but when he realized Locke was going to do just that regardless, he decided to turn the situation around and if Locke wants to think Ben has that kind of control on him, then great, he'll use it to his advantage and make him believe it was part of the plan all along.

Is Kate's last name Austin? When Juliet was talking to Ben about handcuffing herself to "Austin", I was a little confused.

Austen, I believe. Closed Captioning has its advantages.

In "The Man from Tallahasse Ben specifically says, "I was born on this island."

Edited to add: I have the dvd in my recorder at the moment so I went back to doublecheck just to make sure I did remember that correctly. Ben's little monologue goes, "I was born on this island. Not many of my people can say that. Most of them were recruited and brought here. And as much as they love this place, as much as they would do anything to defend it, they need to know they can leave if they want to. The sub maintains that illusion."

I stand corrected. I was remembering in "The Glass Ballerina", when Ben first revealed his real name to Jack and then told him he has lived his whole life on the island. I really don't remember the exchange in "The Man from Tallahassee".

Interesting. I was just reading a post elsewhere that someone played around with the letters from the wall when Alpert gave Juliet the sedative. Herarat Aviation, with a little jumbling could be "Earhart" Aviation . . . as in Amelia Earhart? On theory says she crashed in the Phoenix Island in the Pacific. . . Hmmm . . ?

I had a different take on the name of the company and thought it was referring to Juliet's role in this episode....

Herarat = Her A Rat

Ok so we all agree he was born on the island. How old do you think he is? Who are his parents. They must have been from the Darma Initiative. If he is 40 we are talking the 60s which puts us in the hatches.

Now remember Julia saying everyone was dying from sickness do you think this is part of it?

According to Juliet, every pregnant woman on the island dies. But, she also said that she thinks "it"(whatever kills them) happens at conception. So, it seems that Rosseau and Claire were safe, because conception took place off the island. Sun is a different story, because it is unclear as to when or where she conceived.

Claire was implanted with something when she was kidnapped by the Others. Is it possible that the Losties, that have been in the Others custody, may have been implanted as well? That would include Kate, Jack, Sawyer, Sayid, Charlie and Locke.

I saw people saying the same thing in the thread where I was reading the Amelia Earhart connection. It's certainly plausible that both were intentional. It's just the sort of subtle double entendre that the writers love.

I don't know about everyone else, but it does make you think twice about the "fake out" with Sawyer, when Ben said his heart would explode if the heart rate went up too high.

And I'm guessing that if Sun gets sick (or doesn't get sick) that's how we'll get our answer as to who the father is? Juliet didn't say when they start being symptomatic did she?

There are some unconfirmed rumors/spoilers that say who his parents are . . . but they're very unconfirmed and I won't post it in this thread.

But I think the timeline has Dharma coming to the island in the 70's. One of the big debates on one of the boards I lurk is if Ben's lying because he's too old to be Dharma or if there were people (may or may not be related to Dharma) on the island before Dharma actually came over for all this research. We know that the island was previously inhabited (4 toed statue), but was it continuously previously inhabited. . . that's the real question I guess.

I had forgotten about the statue. Wouldn't it be cool if Ben had four toes? That would start a whole new mystery. Jack would likely have noticed it in surgery though.

I'm off these boards for about a week now--going to WDW!

I cant wait to watch this episode...it is Tivo'd...hate all the commercials.
I have caugt up on all your posts from today and yesterday so tomorrow night my family will sit down and watch it. I will see what we can catch after reading all that happened.:thumbsup2

I meant the French woman I forget her name. She said everyone was dying season 1 right?

Sun may have been pregnant before she got on the island.

Do we know how old Ben is?

I'm not sure "the sickness" Rousseau was referring to was the same . . . this seems to only effect women. Unless you go by the new theory that she was the one effected and it made her a lil crazy, suspicious and thought the men were sick so killed them

Hopefully we'll find out more about Sun's pregnancy during her and Jin's upcoming flashback!

And not officially. We've never been given an estimate of Ben's age - but he certainly looks older than the 34 years Dharma's been on the island. I think most people are assuming he's in his 40s.

Thought this was interesting - I've heard people who have been frustrated this season say no one's watching anymore pointing to ratings that are seemingly down. In reality, they're up this season by 4 million.

LOST Finds Missing Viewers

April 13, 2007

It's no secret that LOST's move to 10pm est cost the show viewers, every muckraker with a zeal for bad news was all over LOST's sharp decline after the show returned to the new time slot. Since that time, however, new research has shown that those mysterious disappearing viewers didn't stop watching the show at all, they just changed when they watched it. In the end it would appear most of LOST's audience is intact.

The slight of hand comes into play when you look at how Nielsen Media Research tallies DVR viewers. Essentially, in their formula if you don't watch the show by 3:00am the following day, you do not count as a viewer. Since Thursday is arguably 'Must See TV' night, and there are plenty of high powered shows on Tuesday and Wednesday to fill up DVR hard drives across the country, LOST viewers who can't - or won't - stay up beyond the 10:00pm thresh hold are probably getting caught up on the weekend.

Indeed when LOST is re-examined in 'live plus 7' model, which counts you as a viewer by either watching live or at any point a week after, LOST reemerges with the ratings strength that made it a legend to begin with, picking up as many as four million additional viewers since the third season began and completely owning this demographic across the board. LOST sees an average 24% growth in this category versus its closest competitor Heroes, which picks up a still substantial 18%.

Of course this data isn't much good for anything other than thumbing your nose, if you're ABC; LOST has already driven the value of ABC's Wednesday 10:00pm time slot through the roof by actually bringing a record increase in viewers which fit the desirable 18-49 year old demographic bracket. The additional DVR viewers do restore some dignity to those who have defended the shows popularity, but remember: DVR's have fast forward buttons, and the TV biz is all about selling advertising.
