Lost opportunity to join

Some posts in this thread surprise me. In the past we've heard a number of stories about people missing out on the special financing due to being restricted to 30 days from tour. I don't recall hearing of DVC going back on their rules in that context previously. While it may sound silly, they have to have rules. This rule would be designed to pressure one into buying quickly rather than waiting and maybe not buying at all. Maybe a supervisor will let it go through. If you can get the actual names of someone who did get around this successfully and DVC can document it, they will likely let you slide as well. Good luck.

I would call and speak to someone at the DVC sales office. I bet they will somehow be able to get you SSR for the original price that the 72 hr offer was.
If you can still get the original price at SSR then, I would ask yourself 3 questions:
Are you young enough that you will realistically use the extra 12 years?
Would you plan your trips 8-11 months in advance where you would take advantage of the home resort booking window?
If you are young enough that you will use the extra 12 yrs but do not plan your trips 8-11 months in advance than go with SSR. The home resort booking advantage is useless unless you plan ahead, so you will have equal chances of getting into any DVC resort and you will get 12 more years of DVC use, which is a biggie.
If you are young enough and will plan trips ahead then you must ask yourself do you want SSR as your home resort?
If yes, then I would go with SSR just for the extra time in the membership, which is a biggie! If the answer is no, then I would look into a DVC resort that better fits your vacation tastes, wants and desires and start looking at resales.
Good luck!

You should really look into the resale market, Ive been a DVC Member since 97 First at OKW then at VB and HH. We just bought a resale for BWV and paid 67.00 a pt for 200 pts. there are so many resales out there I definately think that its the way to go. The ten extra years might be the only good thing about buying at SS, but take into cosideration your age and how much usage you will get out of those ten extra yrs.

P.S. On our recent resale purchase we also got a additional 150 pts that were banked from last year.:bounce:

Good Luck in whatever you decide

I have to be very honest here...something about this doesn't sound right to me. This guide Susan sounds like she might be "stretching" the truth a little. I'd call the DVC, ask to speak to a supervisor for the guides and tell that perosn your story. It is my understanding that the $79/point price is in effect until 10/31/03. If the supervisor of the guides concurs with Susan, then I think I'd buy resale.

I have to say, when we bought, there was absolutely no pressure, nothing even remotely underhanded or sneaky-sounding. It was very up front and absolutely no pressure. I am wondering if the problem is Susan rather than the DVC????

Dean...since I was the one who used the word "silly", I suppose you are referring to my post. If you look back at it, what I said was silly was the suggestion to just add someone's name to the deed who wasn't at the presentation. Evidently, this would circumvent the rules and give them until October 31 (presumably) to make their purchase.

And since both the husband and wife were at the presentation, there really isn't a viable solution.

That's what I thought was silly. And why I had quoted that specific from the post.

Actually, no. Silly was my word and I wasn't using it to refer to anyone, I didn't ever reallized it had been used in this thread. I was simply refering ot the idea that DVD makes rules and general sticks to them. My wording seems to be getting me in trouble with a few people lately with absolutely no intent on implying anything.

I really don't like this sales tactic. All I've heard over the years is how DVC isn't the hard sell like other timeshares. Having to make a decision in 3 days to get a good discount is hard sell in my opinion.

Have the rule but make is something like 2 weeks. That gives the prospective buyer the chance to do some research, check his finances, and come to a decision.

If it were two weeks I think the majority of the people who would have gone ahead and purchased in 3 days will continue to purchase. Maybe there will be some people who would have gone ahead and purchased in 3 days but given two weeks decide not to purchase due to one reason or another. If they were really considering purchasing they will probably come back and purchase at a later time, when it more fits into their budget.

I also think with 2 weeks to consider there will be some people who did not purchase in the 3 days who would after two weeks because they had the time to do the proper analysis.

This may be a stupid question, but if I called today, could I buy at $79.00 per point?? I already own, bought resale and a few points direct, never did a tour, just telephoned several times, poor Julie Hughes, I probably bugged her to death!! But I thought if I wanted to buy more and take advantage I could just call. What's the difference if they just call and say they want to buy, and since the special ends 10/31, why wouldn't they get it??

Dean...no harm, no foul. :)

As for the rules, I think that many of the posters are okay with the rules. It's just that they are not communicated to the guests before the tour starts.

Why can't they just start by saying "At the end of this tour I'm going to make you a great offer that will only be good for three days. Taking the tour will start the clock on that decision".

Obviously, they could word it better, but the general idea is to let people know that though Disney doesn't do a lot of pressure selling, there is a timeframe that they will have to decide in order to take advantage of the offer.

Otherwise, I'd suggest that they expand to two weeks for the offer. That would give people a decent chance to look into the decision.

I know when DW and I were considering purchasing at the end of '01, my guide told me that the price per point for BCV would be $75 until they opened. After that they were going to go up to $80. Unfortunately I him-hawed around until August of '02 before taking the plunge. Well...BCV opened in July and when I called in I asked my guide if there was any way that we could get in at the $75 price. He said unfortunately not, but he might be able to do better on the point buyback offer.

To make a long story short, we decided just to go in at $80 and bank our points. I think it was a good decision because now we are going to have enough points to take the grandparents down for a week next November.

Wow, what a discussion! Thanks for all your replies. It amazes me how many DVC members monitor this Web site. To find so many loyal to the DVC, is just one of the many reasons why we have decided to join! ::yes::

We are purchasing 255 points at Sarasota Springs. We were able to take advantage of the $79 per point offer, even though it is past the 72-hour time limit, because we added my mother's name to the contract as an associate member. An associate member is not a co-purchaser. They are not liable for the loan. They are not a co-owner or member but can make reservations using the points (which considering my mother is older and no longer travels, she won't be doing that). Because she did not tour with us, Susan was able to offer the $79 per point deal. After Nov. 1, points for Saratoga Springs will go for $84 each.

It's been a struggle but we are very excited to become DVC members. We plan to keep informed by using this Web site.

Thanks again for your input.:wave2:

I am glad it worked out to your liking!

Congratulations on your purchase!!!

and

Welcome Home :)

cjacobs...that's great news!!! You'll love that decision.

I still think that DVD creating ways to circumvent their own rules is kind of goofy (guess that fits), but the bottom line is you got a great price for a great vacation investment.

Let us know when you're "official" so we can welcome you home!!

I too am glad it worked out and WELCOME HOME!!!

Welcome home! Glad it worked out for you.

Hi, everyone can you help ?

I am now in the position to take the plunge with DVC and was interested in the $ 79 deal at SSR.

I didn't realise it ran out today. Is this deal only open if taking out finance ? I wanted to make a cash purchase.

I think you have until tomorrow - give a call, I bet they will allow it, especially if you are paying cash!!

Yup - signed up and paid the deposit - I'm in !!

Poor rep - they had to ring him at home - it was his day-off ! He took my sale driving back into the office - :D

But like I said to him - that's got tobe the easiest deal you've done !! I haven't even seen the SSR sales literature !

Woo Hoo
175 points at SSR - roll on our first visit "Home "
