Los Angeles just hit by earthquake

So we are to arrive at Disneyland exactly one week from today. I know they build buildings to withstand earthquakes. Do they build rides (esp. roller coasters) to withstand earthquakes?

Landers/Big Bear was brutal. I was in Redlands (U of R), and the main quakes plus all the aftershocks - I felt like I had a hangover that would never end. Lived in Anaheim Hills area during Northridge, and I actually had to crawl to the closet to take cover (and I am not a take cover kind of girl).

They are showing some damage in Pomona (older brick buildings), and a water main break in LA. I definitely felt it in Fallbrook, but just another day of rock-n-roll in SoCal. Better than fires...

Finally DH called! He was out to lunch, and felt the car shake and roll while at a stop sign! He thought he had a flat tire until he realized what it was.

I'm in Anaheim and all is well. Spoke with a friend who works at DLR and the rides are closed (except the Tea Cups) while they check them over, but sounds like everyone is okay.

We had to evacuate our building, but no real damage and we're back at work.

LOL

That's just what I said on my last post on page 3. That earthquake really changed things for me. For a lot of people.

I remember driving to the Motherhood Maternity store where I was a manager of in the Sherman Oaks Mall and it appeared as though someone had picked up the store, shaken it like a snow globe and then set it down again. Everything was trashed. Including a floor to ceiling mirror that just crashed down from the wall. It took weeks to get that store ready to re-open, as it did with many in that mall.

Had the quake happened later in the day, while I'd been at work, well.....honestly who knows what would have happened to me. It's a sobering thought.

Maybe this will be a reminder to everyone to be prepared and have emergency kits with them in the house and car.

And just the thought of that apartment building in Northridge that just pancaked and collapsed on itself is SO scary because that could be any apartment building at the epicenter of a quake. That was a terrible experience for everyone here in SoCal - and we were so vulnerable because it just happened in the wee hours of the morning. Half of the people were not awake, and the other half were not dressed (like me!). You don't even have time to get your wits about you and figure out what to do, and remember to get your shoes on so you don't step on your snowglobes that just broke!

Good thing you were not in the shop - you are right about that!

Just slightly felt it over here in LAS. Having a cup of coffee at a favorite spot in SW Las Vegas. Just felt a slightshaking and coffee cup dance slightly on "table" Didn't think nothing of it until seeing it pop up on the internet news. Just stopped by my grandfather's house. They never felt a thing. His housekeeper has a home near La Puente(sp?) Her husband is there now and definitely got jolted. Son is working in Chinohills and is OK. Her daughter in law is on the phone now and a little shaken.

Yeah, we felt it here too. Only part of my building shook and the lights swayed. We are right by Fremont Street in Downtown Las Vegas.

All attractions at Disneyland were evacuated. They then each have to be "ok'd" one by one before they can be up and running again with guests allowed in.

This is a process that takes quite some time, but is done clearly with guest safety in mind most importantly.

Los Angeles just hit by earthquake

Btw, the earthquake was not in Los Angeles. It was in Riverside county, close to the Orange County line. Sorry, but as a born raised local, not everything out here is LA. I can't stand the Angels are the Los Angeles Angels!!

I was on the phone with Disneyland Reservations when it hit. I just heard sceaming and banging, I was so scared for them! It sounded like someone violent person came in and took the place over... :scared1: I did not know what to think... I stayed on the line and the gal came back and said they had just had a big earthquake! I asked if everyone was OK, and she said "Yes, I'm going to put you on hold, OK?" I said OK, but then the line went dead... I just called back and eveyone is OK...I said I would call back later with my questions... I feel like I bonded with them!

5.4 quake shakes Southern California
Tuesday, July 29, 2008
CHINO HILLS, Calif. (KABC) -- A magnitude 5.4 earthquake hit late Tuesday morning two miles southwest of Chino Hills in San Bernardino County.
The jolt was felt from Los Angeles to San Diego, and slightly in Las Vegas. It caused buildings to sway and triggered some precautionary evacuations.
The quake was initially estimated at 5.6, then revised to 5.8, but has been since has been downgraded to a magnitude-5.4 by the U.S. Geological Survey. Twenty-seven aftershocks quickly followed, according to USGS seismologist Kate Hutton from Caltech. The largest were magnitude-3.6.
There have been no reports of any injuries or major damage in Los Angeles, San Bernardino, or San Diego counties.
There is a report of a water main break near Cal State L.A. that has lifted the roadway. Eastern Avenue and City Terrace Drive in City Terrace have reportedly buckled. There's been reported a gap on the northbound 241 connector to the eastbound 91 Freeway. The freeway has not been shut down.
The quake struck at 11:42 a.m. PDT. Buildings swayed in downtown Los Angeles and San Diego for several seconds. Some workers evacuated buildings.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power has not received any reports of earthquake-related power outages or impacts to the water system. A Southern California Edison spokeswoman says some electrical outages have been reported in Chino, Chino Hills, Diamond Bar and Pomona.
All rides at Disneyland were evacuated. Visitors remain in the theme park in outdoor open spaces.
All Amtrak trains have been stopped for inspections. Metrolink trains have also been delayed in the wake of the quake

I hope all of our buddies on the West Coast are doing ok today. :grouphug:

I was born and raised here in Northern CA and have felt a handful at most. Last big one out here being Loma Prieta (I know I jacked up that spelling ;) )
if I remember right.

...Hoping all our Southern Cal friends are safe...jc

Wow we were out and just heard about this. My daughter's best friend is there for the very first time ever. Arrived yesterday and her mom spent YEARS saving for this trip. I feel just sick for them, and everyone that is affected by this.

My brother lives in LA near the La Brea tar pits. I got a text that all was OK.
:grouphug:
Stay safe everyone!

well my heart goes out to those not from California and going crazy about this. Especially the younger kids.. I can't image how scary this is for those who are not used to eartquakes like some of us are.. Those after shocks are not helping... that is a pretty good number of them.. Be safe you guys and be aware of your surrroundings. Know your exits in the hotels you are at and have a plan with your family.

tongue-in-cheek suggestion

You could always take the kids to Universal Studios first, so they can experience an earthquake in the tram tour.

You can then tell them that an earthquake isn't as nearly as bad as this:
