Los Angeles just hit by earthquake

I can never get used to quakes and I have lived here all my life. They make me so nervous. I think the Northridge quake really just sent me over the edge, but I definitely remember the Landers/Big Bear quakes too. Those were big! I get so scared during quakes because I am afraid they are going to get bigger and my darn building wouldn't stop shaking. I have to calm down now and wait for the news to tell me what fault it was on. San Andreas is the least of our worries now. There are so many unknown faults underground (like the Northridge one) we could get hit from anywhere and not know it!

I'm curious about which fault as well. I used to live in NorCal and was less than 10 miles from the epicenter of the 1989 quake in the Santa Cruz Mountains. With all the aftershocks of that one, it just really frazzles my nerves! Haven't felt any aftershocks today though.

Well, that just made for an interesting hour for me!
I am at work in Corona (which is about 10 miles from Chino). It felt very strong here. I am on the second floor and the windows sounded like they were going to cave in. We have 22 office personnel and 170 plant workers in the back. We evacuating the entire building. Management and myself (I am the HR person) accounted for everyone, while two maintenance guys checked our gas lines and whatnot. After 15 minutes standing in the sun, everyone settled down and we went back inside. I haven't heard of any injuries or even building damage, so hopefully everyone is fine. Like I said though, it sure broke up the monotony of the work day!:)

Great to hear everyone is OK. Wish you all the best over there.

I hope everyone near it is safe and ok! :grouphug:

I grew up in SoCal and well remember the Northridge quake. :sad2: I lived in Glendale at the time.

Here is some info on that for those of you who don't remember or know about it and are curious:
The Northridge earthquake occurred on January 17, 1994 at 4:31 AM Pacific Standard Time in Reseda, CA. The earthquake had a "strong" moment magnitude of 6.7, but the ground acceleration was the highest ever instrumentally recorded in an urban area in North America.
Seventy-two people died as a result of the earthquake with more than 12,000 injured. In addition, the earthquake caused an estimated $12.5 billion in damage, making it one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

That quake scared the crap outta me and while quakes never bothered me before, after that I was terrified of them. Hopefully the after shocks won't be too bad.

Those would be aftershocks.

Did you feel anything JadeStar? I didn't and I'm in Cave Creek. But, right before I heard about the quake, my daughter came in to tell me how clumsy she is. She was walking around and for no particular reason just lost her footing. We then heard about the quake and realized that she had fallen right about the time of the quake.

jlmarr: I know it's near the epicenter - it's the suggested ride that's irrelevant :rotfl:

I remember that 1989 quake - I didn't feel it but I recall it was big news in California. Yes, I have not heard specifically which fault either yet for the one today. Just Chino Hills epicenter. It IS frazzling to one's nerves. I knew a lot of people who used to say earthquakes were 'fun' until they experienced the Northridge quake. No one I knew had ever gone through anything as scary as that, and I think that was 'just' a 6.7 on an unknown fault! People were shell shocked after that. It was so jarring. Imagine when we have the 'Big One' or any 'Big One' - it will be bedlam and mayhem in the streets. As it is today, the cell phone lines were down for a while. Everything was jammed up. I can't fathom what would happen in a REALLY big quake. I know I will probably faint!

Is Bonita newer than the other towers? I think that building rollers started in the 1980's.

I used to work in 10 Universal City Plaza on the 37th floor. The building is on rollers. I used to get seasick on windy days.

Yes, Bonita was the newest tower at the time.

my friend is saying some news was saying all power went out in LA true or false

It didn't go out where I am in L.A. (Beverly Hills/Miracle Mile). It takes a lot to get our power off over in my specific area. But just a mile or two over, their power goes at out the slightest breeze or movement.

I work in Brea, close to being smack dab in the middle of the epicenter and Disneyland. We REALLY felt it here, but our building is on rollers so it was really moving. They evacuated our building, there is some slight damage (cracks here & there), but nothing major. We're back to work and keeping our fingers crossed that none of the aftershocks are bigger than the quake itself. Some people are pretty shaken up, but luckily no reports of any injuries here or with loved ones.

well i felt something and i get head acks after earthquakes i just wasnt sure what it was.

That would be me. I was pretty brazen until the Northridge quake. I lived in Brentwood and it scared the you know what out of me. I don't know anybody who found that one fun. Landers/Big Bear was pretty frightening, too. I thought well at least it was over, started getting my nerves back and then, boom, we had another big quake.

I'm about 30 miles away.

There was a huge jolt, felt like my house was hit by a giant truck. Then complete stillness. Then shaking... and shaking... and shaking.

Standing in the doorway, watching our wedding champagne glasses shaking on the memory shelf mounted to the wall can make 30 seconds feel like forever.

We are ok (nerves aside). I have to say that may be the fastest my little dog has ever responded to me when I called him!!! Little guy never listens, but wow did he come running quick this time.

Phone service seems to be very unstable. Calls go through but can't talk. Calls not going through. And so on.....

According to ABC News, Disneyland evacuated all attractions. The center of the quake was about 15 miles from DLR.

LOL

That's just what I said on my last post on page 3. That earthquake really changed things for me. For a lot of people.

I remember driving to the Motherhood Maternity store where I was a manager of in the Sherman Oaks Mall and it appeared as though someone had picked up the store, shaken it like a snow globe and then set it down again. Everything was trashed. Including a floor to ceiling mirror that just crashed down from the wall. It took weeks to get that store ready to re-open, as it did with many in that mall.

Had the quake happened later in the day, while I'd been at work, well.....honestly who knows what would have happened to me. It's a sobering thought.

Maybe this will be a reminder to everyone to be prepared and have emergency kits with them in the house and car.

Felt it in Irvine. This is my first earthquake (and probably not my last) since I moved here. Was at work. And I am definitely still a little freaked out. Nothing like a little Dis to make me feel a little better.

while at lunch it came on CNN about the quake! we were just out there for our vacation this past june. didn't sound like a too bad one. that's what so scary about those things, you never know when there going to strike. at least we have a warning for the hurricanes here. i remember my sister living in san francisco when they had the one in 1989 and she worked downtown and it happened like @ 5:05. it was so scary cause we couldn't talk to her till later that night.

Yes, that Landers/Big Bear combo was very frightening too because they were two different types of quakes, and the BB quake was a direct result of the Landers one, so it gives us an idea of how vulnerable the ground is when one quake can tirgger another one. I had just gotten my nerves settled from Landers, and was learning that it was a 7.6 or whatever, and then all of a sudden - BOOM! Big Bear quake hits and also scared me half to death. But that Northridge quake made me afraid to go to sleep at night or to go in the house. EVerything broke into pieces. And when I DID clean everything that had broken in the house up and finally get back to sleep, I felt like I had to stay dressed for about a month afterwards. I couldn't wear pajamas at night. I ahd to wear street clothes. I just remember being terrifed when the quake started before dawn, running through the house in a towel, telling my grnadmother to stay calm, but meanwhile I was the one freaking out! Then, I got the door open and saw all of my neighbors running out to their cars. It was horrible and frightening, and the thought of a larger one is the ONE thing that makes me want to get out of California sometimes!
