DD13 only has pimples around the hairline and temples. So I started looking into shampoos that might help. She is using a Garnier dandruff shampoo that has some salicylic acid in it, but I saw that ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfates can cause breakouts. My MIL mentioned Loreal has sulfate free and they seem to be the most "budget" sulfate free. But I don't know which version to pick.

Has anyone else noticed a difference in a teen's breakouts after switching to sulfate-free?

Have you checked out Whole Foods or Trader Joe's? Both make their own sodium lauryl sulfate free shampoos. I buy the large 32 oz bottles from Whole Foods for $6 a piece which I think is a decent price.

I may be wrong but did you check into the baby shampoo's? I believe quite a few of them are sulfate free.

I had no idea!!!

Check out ulta.com and search sulfate free shampoos. They have quite a few and they are resaonable.

So many options, I am a little overwhelmed! I may look into the baby shampoos.

She has curly long hair, tends to have an oily scalp, and may have sensitive skin. We could use something that reduces frizz, but I don't want it to make the oilyness worse.

Our pediatrition suggested tea tree oil shampoo or head & shoulders a couple of times a week. I bought trader joes tea tree shampoo, conditioner & body wash for my DD - said its helping (I see a difference too).

Please ignore bad spelling, ect I am typing one handed as I hold a sickbaby in the other

I don't think it is the shampoo that is causing the breakout, it is probably the actual oil from her hair that is causing the breakout. I would work with her on her skin care routine. Such as:

Pull hair back away from back and face as soon as she gets home (ponytail, headbands, etc)
Wash makeup off as soon as possible
Use an astringent on parts that break out regularly
use an oil free moisturizer on clean dry skin
Sleep with hair away from face
Change pillow case every other night (it is where the most dirt is that irritates skin at night.)

I had this problem. I found out it was the conditioner residue left on my skin after my shower.

I started making sure the last thing I did before getting out of the shower was wash my face, paying special attention to the hairline, and it stopped within a week.

On a side note though. I've been using L'Oreal sulfate free products, and it has made all the difference in my hair. I was using it when I had the breakouts, so I don't think switching would help. But for great hair, yes :goodvibes

I think this is good advice and some of this had come to my mind last night. I did wonder if she should get her hair off her face at home. She doesn't wear makeup. She uses Mary Kay #2 freshner for an astringent, I might move her up to #3 which is for acne.

This is all new to me, I didn't have much trouble with this as a teen but she has her dad's skin.

We might try it - great hair is a good thing!

I use a number of different sulfate free shampoos and conditioners. My favorite are the Organix line. I usually get mine at Walgreens as they go on sale all the time as buy one get one free. I've never liked the L'Oreal ones.

My daughter has the same issues.. We use Nature's Gate brand the tea tree one for flaky scalp / oily hair.. It usually runs around 7.49 a bottle at Target.

I will keep the Trader Joes brand in mind looks like a better price :)

I wash my hair with baking soda! I have a big plastic bowl, I add maybe 1/4C b s and warm water, I place the bowl on a chair, kneel down and scrub my scalp/wash my hair, then I move to the tub *leaning over* rinse that out and then condition *just the lower part of my hair - no conditioner on my scalp* I use Aveda Rosemary Mint conditioner.

I use sulfite free shampoo--but I avoid companies that do animal testing, which loreal does.

I like the Trader Joes brand the best of the inexpensive/animal cruelty free brands.

Like this. do you use the BS due to breakouts or sulfite issues?

I wouldn't move her up to a harsher strength without first looking into if she is washing properly.

Another culprit may be hairspray. Now granted I grew up in the 80's with big hair bangs with tons of spray, it doesn't mean that teenagers aren't still reaching for the hairspray. Hairspray clogs pores and can cause skin irritation, since many teens shoot it near the hairline to keep it in place.

Now as an adult the first thing I do when I get home is take a small barrette and pull my hair away from my face. It does work.

How many times is she washing her face? Is she working the lather right near the hairline or is she skipping that area in favor of not mussing her hair?

I've used the Loreal sulfate free for colored hair--shampoo with sulfates strips the color right out of my hair. It worked just fine except I have fine hair and it didn't fluff it up as much as the shampoo with sulfates, even though it was the volume kind. I wasn't that fond of the scent, it is piney and seemed pretty strong. I switched over to Pureology which is pricer but I like the scent better and the bottle is bigger so it has lasted quite a while. I got both kinds at Ulta. Get on their mailing list and they will send you coupons every so often which helps with the cost of non-sulfate shampoos. My scalp is dry so I can't speak to their oil control properties.
