We're looking to buy into DVC & are trying to figure out how many pts we'll need. We will probably go every other yr & I think I understand about banking & borrowing pts. My question is if we need to buy transferred pts from another member can we bank all these pts until the next yr in addition to banking our own pts?

I think that is a pretty unusual question. When we purchased, we looked at the cost of a week in the time period we wanted to travel. That meant we needed at least 218 points annually, so we purchased 230. After just one year of planning, we realized we needed a few more, so we added on another 150 points. I guess what I am trying to say is that if you plan to rent (have points transfered) before you even buy, then maybe you are trying to buy too few points. Banking and borrowing should work such that most of the time you get by with your own points through banking and borrowing. I for one, do not want to let others have my points, and I also don't think it is necessary to own more than I intend to use. I think you need to plan a little more carefully teh amount of points you think you will be needing in the near future. You can always purchase more later if banking and borrowing proves not to be enough.

We bought 250 points over a year ago and find that to be a great number. IF we could afford more, we'd have bought more. We went for New Year's Eve adn got a great two bedroom at Saratoga Springs (our home resort). With the high demand night of New Year's Eve we were able to stay 4 more nights at cheap time (pus had 20 left over). What I think you should consider is how many bedrooms you would want, when you'd want to go and if you think your kids will want to take friends.
you can bank all of your points from one year and borrow from teh following year. So, if you have 250 points you can actually use 750 at one time (3 years worth) and could even go on a cruise. We are going to florida for a wedding in two weeks adn found it much cheaper to fly into orlando than fort meyers (on southwest) and decided to use a few points for 3 nights and use our annual pass we bought. All we are paying for is a rental car (@ $100 wk - bargain) and miscellaneous food, souveniers etc. It gives us the flexibility as a couple and family now and in the future. Plus, I have older stepkids - what better gift than to give them a vacation with their families one day. I just wish we had more points - I want to go on the Safari after the kids grow up! When we are old and grey, my husband and I will be able to go to Florida for a month (in the off season) and not have to worry about maintaining a yard, a pool etc, with the exception of annual dues - which at Saratoga Springs were only about $700 this year - cheapest of all resorts. I hope this helps.

Yes I agree that banking & borrowing will cover our situation 99% of the time. And if you don't want me to touch your pts fine for you but I'm looking for someone that can answer my initial question. The situation would be if we wanted to take family along & rent a grand villa in addition to our normal usage. I don't want to purchase more points for a 1 time situation. But all these answers figure into the UY & # of points we buy.

Sorry you took it as lecturing. No lecturing intended. I just meant that planning to rent points before you buy looks like putting the horse before the cart. If you rent points that are transferred into your account, they are yours to use how you want. It isn't always all that easy to find a large number of points to rent at one time though. I don't think it is something you should assume you are going to need to do prior to purchase. As annearchi indicated, it sometimes takes some creative banking and borrowing to make it all work out. There are quite a few members like myself who don't like the hassles of renting out or renting from another member. If this discusion board folded, it would be much more difficult to find members willing to do that. We have a realatively easy access to other members here, but if the DIS was not here, it would be a great deal more difficult. Because this is a privately owned board, it cannot be assumed that it will always be here or that we will always be allowed to advertise points.

I believe my advice to you is still very sound. ....Buy the points you expect to use and don't count on renting.

BTW, I believe transfered points CAN be banked.
