I just heard all airlines are going to add an $80 fuel surcharge to all roundtrip tickets!
As for the garbage can story. Back in 1999, 5 days after we moved into our first house, Jeff's mom called me freaking out telling me that FIL was having a stroke. Jeff got home a couple minutes later and we raced over to their house. He was laying on the ground in the backyard, and the neighbors were there (one a nurse, the other used to be a paramedic). The ambulance arrived right when we did.
What happened was that he was trying to get the garbage can cleaned out because we were supposed to get bad storms from the remnants of Hurricane Floyd. So he was rinsing out the garbage can and was running behind it, with the lid open, to dump it down the hill in their backyard. His foot caught on the lid, stopped the can, but he kept going into the can. He head apparently caught on the side, bent it as far as possible without snapping his neck, and he ended up laying inside the garbage can.
MIL came outside to see what he was doing, and she thought he was just messing around, so she's yelling at him. Until he told her he couldn't feel his arms or legs. So she called the neighbors first (this woman does NOT know how to dial 911) who came over right away. She told them he was having a stroke so they pulled him out of the garbage can. If she would have called 911 first, they probably would have been more careful moving him. Actually, when the medics got there, she was still telling them he had a stroke so they rolled him onto his back. FINALLY someone listened to Jeff's dad when he told them what happened.
Anyway, he was in a neck brace for a long time, and had to have those vertebrae fused. But yes, he was literally laying head first in a dirty garbage can for who knows how long!!! He's lucky he's not in a wheelchair right now.
