Some of y'all may know this.

We had a bit of a shock this week. Connor, our 10 DS, was diagnosed with type I (aka Juvenile aka insulin dependant) diabetes. He is currently in Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia aka CHOP.

CHOP is considered to be one of, if not the best, Children’s Hospitals in the US, so he is getting great care. He was in real bad shape for a few days but is responding great and is expected home Friday.

At this point, basically they are holding him hostage so we will come and learn how to take care of him. Three shots and 4 blood sugar test a day and he will be just fine. ( I can't beleive they are trusting ME with needles!)

He can eat anything just has to balance the carbs. vs. the insulin. So we get to trick or treat but will eat the stuff over time. That is cool, we can do that. I have a good friend and grade school classmate who's DD is very sick with very bad cancer, know she would be thrilled with 3 shots and blood test every day.

All in all we are fairly positive that we know what is going on, that it is fairly common and that it can be easily treated. Just one more thing to deal with. The good news is he can have Mickey Bars in WDW in December.

I just have to explain the needles getting on the plane.

CHOP has internet service so we can come check for Delswife's reports but I may be a little slow updating Mousterpiece Theater but fear not I will keep to it. (Linked 42 from CHOP) Keeping up with the important stuff in life is one of the things they stress in needle training.

We know you will have a special tought for him and we appreciate it.

He'll be fine.

We all will be.

He is a crazy little guy, here is his reaction to my writing D,RMD adventures: http://badshoe.com/connor drmd.wmv

Oh wow! What a rough time for you all. You have a terrific attitude.

Take care and your family and Conner are in my prayers!!!

Wow - Zurg! I don't know what to say - but it sounds as though all of you have very positive attitudes and I'm so happy to hear that your DS is feeling better and that he'll get to go trick-or-treating.

Prayers for all of you and just relax and take it easy.

Zurg,
Glad to hear things are looking up. My prayers are with you and yours. My DDad has type 2 and has never had a problem bringing his needles on a plane, I think you just have to bring a prescription with you. Ddad really worried that the needles would hurt, but they don't bother him at all, the old way of testing his sugar was much more unpleasant. Take care.

Zurg, prayer just sent up for you all. Thanks for all you do here on the DIS. :)

Zurg -

I'll be thinking good thoughts for you and your family. I've been a diabetic (Type 1) since I was 12 yrs old (I'm now 40 something) and can tell you that it has not limited me in the least. When I was diagnosed my parents took me to the Joslin Clinic in Boston where I learned all about the disease, how to monitor myself and made a lot of friends. I also spent several summers at Camp Cara Barton with other diabetics and made some lifelong friends there as well. I now have an insulin pump and it has really made a difference

As far as CHOP goes....it is indeed a wonderful place! My niece has CF and has been in a study @ CHOP for a couple of years now. Your son couldn't be going to a better place!

Take care and let us know how it goes.

You know, there are very few people I know who would describe this as 'a little bump in the road' in the Zurg's life. If any family can deal with difficulties, bumps, etc, methinks it is the Zurgs.

Of course you, ZW, all the Zurg Jrs, and especially Connor are in my thoughts tonight.

Please. (PLEASE) let me know if there is anything at all I can do for you guys. I do have some 'peeps' in Phila.

Hang in there guys!

Hugs to you.... Hope everything goes smoothly for the little guy! Being in a childrens hospitol is an experience. Just 10 minutes walking your little one around, and you are humbled by what some people have to endure. Its no fun what you are going through. And in NO way am I minimizing that. I have had 3 scares at Childrens in Boston. And every time I left there, all I could think of was but, for the grace of god goes I. you will get through it and most importantly so will he.

My prayers go out for your family and the wellness of your son and having to deal with diabetes at such a young age.

When your ready to travel, don't forget to get that letter that your going to need to carry those extra items onto the plane from your doctor. When we take family vacations, my grandmother who has many metal/plastic parts and is insulin dependant (recovered from Pancrease Cancer) has never had a problem yet flying. We not only have a letter from her doctor but we also have to carry x-rays to.

P.S. - there are a few dollar stores (ie. Dollar General, etc.. and maybe Walmart) that sell these really small square insulated bags (4 inches by 2 inches). They really work pretty good when carrying insulin and having to keep it cold on trips.

Zurgs, I have already sent my hugs to your dw, but here's one for you too....::yes::

It is just a little bump in the road of life, trust me. For all of the awful things that can happen to your child, trust me, this is one of the better.

They will not even blink twice at the syringes (which kind of surprised me). I took a note from my Dr the first trip and never bothered after that.

Take a big word of advice here though---- rotate those shots!!! For years I did them only in my thighs - now I have bruised dead tissue there after 20 years. Finally had the nerve to switch to my tummy a year or so ago. Boy is that comment off topic..........

Most hotels will not charge you extra to have a fridge for your insulin. However, I, in 20 years have RARELY refrigerated mine and it has not caused me troubles.

Give him a hug and a hi from me!!

Zurg...

Prayers and Pixie Dust to you and your DS from here.

Your positive attitude will take you a long way, and it will help you all conquer this 'bump'. You'll not only help your DS as a father now, with all this, but your outlook and view of life will not doubt be an inspiration to him for conquering any other challenges that life may throw his way.

'Big Hug' :grouphug: from our family to yours.

:grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

A hug from everyone in my crew.

You never stop amazing me.

Love ya, mean it.

:wave2: Hi Connor! Chris wants to ride Buzz with you guys!

Zurg my wife and I wish your family the best. Diabetes tends to run in my family an I think you all have a very good outlook on it.

None the less: :grouphug:

Zurg,

After so much delight from your post and seeing Conner's picture almost every day on ZW signature, all I can say is take care, and give him a big:grouphug: from all of us here at DIS.

Prayers and :wizard: PIXIE DUST :wizard:

Prayers and wishes to your family. I know you will be fine and your son will feel better. I have a daycare in my home and one of my little ones, she was 3 at the time, was diagnosed and also went to CHOP. They were wonderful with the family, it is a great place. She has adjusted very well and they have found loads of support. Take care.

Prayers and pixie dust coming your way for Connor and your family. CHOP is an excellent hospital, my daughter was there a couple of times and I understand what you're saying about a "bump in the Zurg's path". When you see all those children in the hospital suffering you realize things could be a lot worse.:grouphug:

Zurg and Mrs. Zurg,
Pixie dust and lots of prayers for your family and especially Connor.:wizard: Give him a big hug from all of us.:grouphug:

Good luck to your DS, Connor, and to the rest of your family. This is a trying time for you and we all wish you well.

Thanks again for the work on the Delswife trip reports. Let's keep up the good work.
