Just wondering if you lip has ever swelled up for no reason at all?

It's happened to me twice in the past couple of weeks. First my bottom lip and now my top lip. Granted, it's not the whole lip but still. I have no idea why this is happening. It has happened a few times over the years but I never really thought anything of it. I didn't bite my lip, didn't hit it with anything, nothing!

Any thoughts?

Did you get any new cosmetics? Maybe some spice or seasoning is bothering it?

Sounds like an allergic reaction. As someone with allergies -- and the parent of kids with severe food allergies -- I'd go to a doctor to get it checked out and figure out the culprit. Severe food allergies can develop at any time in life (weird, I know), and you wouldn't want to be caught without an EpiPen in case you suddenly needed it! You might see if Benadryl helps (if it does, it's likely an allergic reaction). Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional; I just play one with my daughter.

I had my lower lip swell up not too long ago. So large it actually made my smile lopsided.
My dentist said it's likely that it was a reaction to biting the inside of my lip the night before (i likely hit a salivary gland). It lasted several hours before the swelling went down

Could be an allergic reaction to a food or spice as someone mentioned. Can you pinpoint something you eat or maybe even a lip product that causes it to swell?

This happened this past Sunday to my daughter! Upper lip, right in the middle swelled up a bit. No redness or other discoloration, just swelled. Lasted overnight and into the morning. She swears she didn't use anything new on her lips and did not smack/hit her lip with anything.

I think it's from taking so many selfie's and doing duck faces, but that's just me! :rotfl2:

Something I just learned the other day......were you taking any blood pressure medications (like ACE inhibitors) some time ago and them stopped? There's a disorder that involved a reaction several months after stopping these meds. Can't remember what it's called though.

Was it after eating? That happens to me if I eat raw fruit.

I asked basically the same question on this thread a few years ago. DH woke up to swelling, redness, chapped looking (like a clown, but far from funny) lips and they would peel, be ok a day, then repeat. He went to allergy Dr. and had several tests run and 'nothing' could be found.

They put him on prednisone, but had to be taken off after a few days, as then he had constant hiccups as a side affect from the med. The 'only' thing that finally brought relief (and 'not' at the hands of the Drs. :( ) was to stop using Blistex ( which he has used for 30 yrs. with no issues). He had begun using it even 'more' to try to heal his inflamed lips.

Can't imagine anything in the Blistex that would have all the sudden caused such a terrible misery, but he had to be his own 'doctor'!! Has been well since!!

He had lots of well meaning advice from friends and family, but nothing worked. His case was so severe that the doctors had never seen it.

The only thing he uses on his lips now is pure petroleum jelly (Vaseline) and has not had an episode since! :confused3

Good luck in finding your cause! :goodvibes

A relative of mine has that happen as a stress reaction; when she gets very upset her lip just puffs up; it can even be that simple.

I had this happen a few years back. Apparently it was both pine nut and crown related. I didn't know I had a crown coming loose , and there was some gapping in the backside of my gum. SIL has made a salad with pine nuts in it. I guess I had never eaten them before, but have no nut allergies so no reason to have it register. Over the next 2 weeks my lower lip would swell off/on, no rhyme or reason. I also had zero pain on the crown issue. Then I noticed swelling in my gum, thought uh-oh and in I went. DDS sent me to the oral surgeon as he thought the post was the issue and thought I may need it to be removed. Oral Surgeon said post was fine (judging from xrays) and sent me to an Endo thinking it was gum related. Get to the Endo, he sees the post has cracked, but understands how the xrays missed it (o.k.?) he will take care of things. After he takes care of things he says there was residue trapped deep in the gum, and it was pine nut. Long story short, after everything was removed swelling never returned. That was one expensive salad for me tho :faint:

Did you perhaps eat take out fried food either of these times? You may be sensitive to MSG. I can tell when I've eaten some MSG; I have small hives.

I had this happen a few years ago and I found out that it was Blistex also - had also used it many times before with no problem. I now can't use Chapstick either - just plain vaseline is all I put on my lips.

My mom has had this happen. She would break out in welts on her face and lips for no reason. It can happen anytime. She always carries prednisone and allegra with her in case it happens. Works like a charm every time.

After using chapstik for years, I had this happen. I woke up one day to the swelling. It would come and go. The dermatologist told me it was the chapstik and most likely an allergy to the spf. Now I've found that if I get any spf on my lips, they swell. I use Vaseline on my lips of just started using Burts Bees.

I've also had swelling when I eat raw tomatoes or some tomato products.

To decrease swelling I use Carmex. It tastes awful but it works.

It could be hereditary angioedema. My sister never had symptoms until reaching college, but has always had the disorder. This applies to anyone who might have what is seemingly random swelling.
