Lights of Winter - EPCOT archway ??

Hm, interesting, then what is the deal with electricity bill if they own this company, do I miss something?

Electricity isn't free to start with...it costs money in fuel, maintenance, transmission, etc. So owning your own electrical plant may save you money, but it does not make the cost zero.

Plus, I believe they do not provide 100% of the electricity needed by WDW.

But, again, the electricity costs are so LOW, compared to the other costs involved in anything of a creative nature at Disney, they are of little consequence for determining their "savings," if they are cancelled.

Another example:

The "4 for $" quartet that sang as the pre-show at Beauty and the Beast LIVE! On Stage at DHS was terminated last year.

I seriously doubt that even the most miserly Disney bean-counters cackled excitedly about how much they were saving by not lighting the stage for those extra 15 minutes to illuminate the singers' pre-shows.

Electricity is one of the (overall) least expensive components of the entertainment attractions at WDW.

Absolutely...electricity is generally in inconsequential cost, especially when used for lighting. I believe someone did say something about the lights vs. an attraction - motors used to actually move things consume a LOT more power than lights...but still, the cost is a fraction of the overall operating cost of any individual attraction.

I didn't read ALL of the pages of posts on this. I just know that if they truly do do away with this, my family will REALLY miss it. We will not stop going to Disney World. That would be crazy. However, take away things for us to talk about and there are less things for us to tell other people about to convince them that this is a MUST DO during the Christmas season.

Um, Disney profited close to 1 BILLION dollars last quarter. I'm sure a few light bulbs turned on for about 4 hours wouldn't mean a hill of beans to them. It's a fraction of the lights compared to Osbourne light show or Cinderella's castle. They are making more and more cuts while increasing consumer pricing. It's really getting alot of people Peeved!

I'm not sure why it seems like you are arguing with me... :confused3 We're saying the same thing...I was pointing out that the attractions with moving parts consume a LOT more electricity than a bunch of lights...

But again, I'm not sure why we're even debating electricity. It isn't in any way part of the excuse...

My bad. I was getting you confused with Nordkin. There were some Disney apologist on the board about how much it would cost Disney to run the LoW based on kilowatt usage.

My apologies.

Anyway thanks for agreeing!!:thumbsup2

So since we all agreed electricity cost is not a factor in cutting LoW, then what is? Why is this cut? Sorry but I highly doubt nobody checked lights before, they started decorating parks in August. :confused3

I worked during the Holiday season over at Disney back in 2006 and while working at Innoventions, you were also in charge of "EMH, Illuminations and The Tip Board. Every other night, I would work TB and just listening to that attraction was amazing! Even if I heard all the songs repeat themselves for three hrs in a row  It was still amazing.

Epcots decor made me fall in love for Christmas all over again and to hear that they're taking them down pisses me off. Why get rid of the rides that actually make us happy? It makes no sense. Every night I was given the privilege to explain what the LOW were and to take pictures of families big and small in front of it. I hate when Disney does this. What's next? COP?! Now that's the day, I'll strap myself to the metal palm trees outside the attraction :rotfl:

Aww, they have to light the stage anyway because we all sit there expectantly waiting for the mic check that never comes.... :(

Adventurer's Club, The Land, no live narrator; Four for a Dollar, Pocahontas, backlot Tour (don't get me started!), Country Bears Christmas Show, TTA's new narration, can't even remember what all has gone away in the last couple years but it is sad. If we get to Brown Derby next month and there is no grapefruit cake, HEADS ARE GONNA ROLL!

I'm just going to add my 2 cents worth that we really loved the beautiful lighted gateway "lights of winter". We only saw it once but it was one of those jaw dropping awe sticken moments...we were really looking forward to seeing it again. I am still so happy to be going to WDW but I really hope it is there and this is only a rumor. It is kind of like that movie "Lion witch and the Wardrobe" where the children go through the wardrobe into Narnia. It sets the tone for the "Magic up ahead!"pixiedust::sad1:

I just finished reading this entire post and I definitely feel I have to chime in. I have been going to Disney now for 25 years and have missed very few Christmas Seasons. For as long as I can remember the LOW has been there and I have many pictures with those wonderful arches. I'm not going to sit here and quote many of the threads that I wanted to comment on but rather will just comment in my own post. As for the speculation of Disney possibly waiting until the last minute to test the lights and then realize that it isn't working that is not realistic at all considering that a more noticeable change was not performed on Space Mountain due to the fact that actually changing the ride would have kept it closed during the holiday season and that is not something they were willing to allow; and before the comments start I realize that money and other things factored in as well but this was at least a small contributing factor that was mentioned on another thread about space mountain. As for the budgets, considering that Universal had a contract with Marvel which is now being honored to Disney not only are they getting that extra money but I would think that at least some profit from Universal Parks would have to go into Disney and it would definitely make sense for it to go into the "park budget." I can go on all night ranting but I would definitely just like to mention that this whole Holiday in the music instead of Christmas and the Christmas Trees being called Holiday Trees in different parts of the world is just absolutely ridiculous. I am well aware of the separation of Church and State and all about the PC but I'm just sitting here wondering what's next are they going to change the motto of our currency from In God We Trust to In Some Entity We Trust because after all not all religions believe in God (insert sarcasm). Seriously UGH I feel sums it all up. Oh and in case anyone is wondering I am going this holiday season because it has been booked and fully payed for as well as this being my grandparents first trip in a long time to the world during the holiday season however you better believe that an email, snail mail letter, phone call and an in person complain will be made (did I forget any method LOL) Thank you for listening I just really needed to rant.

I know a lot of people are upset to see LOW gone. I'm rather ambivalent about it. I liked the arches well enough at night when the were lit, but during the day I felt they were a sort of cluttered mess - looked a bit like a scaffolding around the monorail track. However, I do wish they would have replaced them with something new, instead of just doing away with them altogether. Epcot used to really decorate a lot. I have a lot of photos from the first few Christmases in the park, and there were lots of decorations everywhere. Little by little, the decorations have been scaled back - it's especially noticeable to me in WS. With all the LED and fiber optic systems out there, they could have come up with something really spectacular that would be decorative day or night. It's a shame they dropped the ball on this one.

Maybe all this "bad press" will prod them into doing something new next year.

Hi!

What happened with the BACK LOT tour? Did they make it shorter??? I also don't remember a Pocahontas attraction/show. Could you possibly give me details? Thank you! Brunette

I had emailed Disney a week or so ago about the LOW. I got a responce today that definetively states that the LOW will not be put up this year due to obsolete technology. This is official and final it sounds like. This is our first holiday trip and we have never seen the LOW but I share the disapointment.
