Life’s too short...to never sleep in a treehouse! 8/27 TR is up! Link in siggie

I loved this update. You made me feel your pain. LOL. But the wonderful gift of falling in love w/ Disney makes it worth it. I hope that you are going to tell us more of the story.

But when you aren't used to the good, you look for, and expect the bad. It took us both a long time to realize we didn't need to live our lives like that anymore.

I love, love this statement. First of all, it is beautifully written. Second, it is so true how easy it is to assume that life will always be hard. You develop this tough skin and watch out for every speed bump. I used to be this way too, so this really spoke to me.

One last thing. We have decided to go to DL in April too, but I think our dates are different than yours. We are going April 5 - 10. Didn't you say you are going the week after? It would have been fun to be there at the same time.

Ok all you crafty people out there. I am looking for feedback as I get papers created so have set up a feedback site. Feel Free to stop by here and let me know what you like, don't like, what you'd love if it existed...

I will shamelessly run with any ideas!

:)

I LOVE them!!! My fav is the daisies! LOVE THEM!!! I really love that you can personalize them!

Have you thought of doing elements to go along with the paper? Like frames, borders, little dohickeys, etc?

Moving on...

What a great update! I can't believe no one slept! OMG! I can feel the stress through the post!

I think a little disney magic was working in your favor with the room being ready!

Can't wait to hear all about MGM!!

I checked out your site the other day and really love the papers too. The colors are so peaceful and make me smile. :goodvibes

After reading your retro report, I'm ready for a nap. And wow - that IS red!!! That's enough to wake a person up.

Forgot to mention, a couple more sets are up today!

I will be continuing the retro report :) It's about half written :)

RATS! We will be there exactly a week after you, we arrive on the 17th, that would have been so much fun! Where are you staying?

It's a funny thing, you spend so much time in crises mode that it is hard to not only learn how to be happy, accept(and recognize) that you are and then know what in the world to do with yourself now that you don't have to brace for disaster. That it is actually ok to be happy and content! Jeff and I literally were at a loss after the house was done and we moved in. We kept thinking...ok what will hit us next? When nothing did we just weren't quite sure what to make of it. And when it continued to go on like that we realized we needed a serious mind set adjustment. In a good way.

Thanks, I like the daisies too although today I'm loving the sunflowers. I have thought of elements and will probably go there someday but want to just build inventory and sets at this point.

MGM is coming up next!

What a travel day! Looks like that lobby is red enough to wake you up!

I've only done a red eye once on the way to Atlantis - thought I could sleep on the way to Miami - not so much. I'm not sure I want to do it again - when I got there, I spent half the day napping instead of lounging by the pool.

A little bit but not much. With 2 rooms those 3 nights are killing me!I got it down from $311 to $276 a night (saving $210) and can drop it down to $258 (saving another $108 lol) if we change the package to a much larger deposit but we are waiting to do that until we see if we can get a better deal than that.

AAA shows $283 right now.

Our problem is the good rates start on the 15th, our check out date! If I could push our whole trip back 3 days we'd save a ton. I'm really hoping they come out with a buy one get one half off family package which they've offered before, that would make a huge difference. I can downgrade our room if I have to though (another whopping $72 lol), we did book Garden View, which with our All Access Pass "should" get us an upgrade to Pool View or Deluxe depending on what's available at check in.

If for some reason there isn't free dining available I might swap US to be at the end of the trip but FD outweighs what we'd save by moving our US dates. I really want to end our trip at WDW though, not at US!

I keep trying to see if staying at WDW works out better since we have the PIN code and it just doesn't as the cost of a rental car outweighs the savings plus we give up the US fast passes. Unless of course we stay at a mod or value for those 3 nights. We could save a little by switching to RPH as well but....

Given that everyone (including me) is excited about HRH....I just have to keep hoping a better deal comes out! The flight deals out there right now are actually awful, $600 flights! But I am hoping that might be an option as well although my preferred airline doesn't do US packages so we'd have icky flights.

I'm thinking if we did switch, it'd have to be to save quite a lot so would probably be 2 rooms at POP with the PIN code. That's enough of a savings (almost $800 for the 3 nights!) to deal with driving and parking and giving up the fast passes lol. And is my budget back up plan I think. I hope we don't have to go there but if flights are outrageous....it's good to have a backup I guess! Still, it's August. It will be HOT. I want to be able to go to the pool mid day and moving off property just...bleh. Don't want to go there.

I really need to do our taxes to see what we are working with!

Are you thinking of going while you are there?

I hope a better deal comes out for you. It's hard to switch offsite and give up the US fastpasses. If you do decide to stay at Pop for those nights, you can always buy the US fastpasses. I'm not sure how much they cost and if that'll even be a savings :confused3

That PIN makes staying in a Disney resort much more appealing. And I completely understand not wanting to end the vacation at US.

What would a rental be for the US days?

I'm considering going only to see the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. But my nephews will be 6.5 and 2 at the time. I'm not sure there would be much for them. And I'm not willing to give up Disney days.

Does US offer PIN codes like Disney?

Loving your report...

Thank you and :welcome:!

Isn't that something? All that red?

The red eye is brutal, no doubt. I've done it twice. Once to MCO with the kids and once coming back to Seattle from Chicago. That one was actually worse as it was a 2 leg trip through Vegas....with a little bit of a layover there. UGH.

Here's the thing though. Traveling east we lose a whole day and it is really really hard to get everyone onto east coast time. As bad as the red eye was, with the nap (probably 3-4 hours by the time we got to the room and crashed) it let us still be tired enough at east coast bedtime to go to sleep and get in the right time zone quickly.

The big kids were a time zone nightmare last trip and both Jeff and I think it will be better if we force the change this way, we've actually built the trip for a full day of recovery (again). So we will see. If we do it I hope we can check in early but....it's a wild card. If we can't do the red eye I'm going to shoot for a super early morning flight out of here so that again, the kids arrive tired. Problem with that is both big kids will sleep on the plane so it could backfire.

Our hope is we take the red eye, people sleep at least part of the way there, we get in about 6:30 again. Take town car to the grocery store and hotel. Check in (which will just be dumping our bags, room unlikely to be ready), have breakfast at The Kitchen and if room isn't ready by then go pass out by the pool.

If all goes well by about 3pm our clocks will be reset and we will be ready to go play for the afternoon and evening and go to bed on time!

Hey Cynthia-

Just wanted to let you know the new thread is up and running...

An Invasion of a STRANGER Kind...

See you over there!

Oooh oooh! On my way!

I hope a better deal comes out for you. It's hard to switch offsite and give up the US fastpasses. If you do decide to stay at Pop for those nights, you can always buy the US fastpasses. I'm not sure how much they cost and if that'll even be a savings :confused3

A rental car will be in the mid 300's as we have to get a van to fit all of us :sad2:

I think if you buy the express pass it is a per day thing (not per ticket with the room like we would have) and can only be used once on each participating ride whereas I think the room ones are unlimited. Not positive about that though. For our dates the express passes run 26 each on Sat and 40 on the Sunday so it'd be $400 for the 2 days! :scared1:

Guess that's why the park tickets themselves are so cheap.

We took the boys to IOA when they were 4 and 5 and they had a BLAST! Lots of stuff for the little ones. They might not be as into HP but the Seuss area was great and a bunch of other stuff. 3D spidey...the Jurassic Park stuff, etc. I think their favorite things was this hysterical talking fountain by Mythos. We had a great day and have wanted to go back since then but one day is sufficient. We've never done the US side in FL, just in CA so that will be fun but it's more of a bonus, not a must-do. We wouldn't save though by just going IOA as our tickets cover both parks for 7 days and were only $99 each. That part is a steal. As a result we will probably hit them 3 or even 4 days, just because we can.

I'm not willing to give up Disney days either, that's how we ended up with a 10 day trip! Of course my original plan was staying somewhere super cheap for the US days and that's obviously morphed into something completely different. By the time we add in a car, parking, buying the express passes, the only way we save is to stay at POP with the PIN and then the savings comes down to about $300. Not worth it unless we have to go there which I am really hoping won't happen!

They do not offer PIN codes, just different deals either through Universal, or Loews or AAA. Apparently the deals can change quite a bit and be added so just keeping my eye on it. The buy one get one 1/2 off would be perfect but I can't find any information as to when it is historically offered, they don't seem to run the same kind of annual promotions that Disney does so it's a bit of a crap shoot!

I notice another ticker....2 trips coming up? Lucky girl!

We try to do the "force yourself onto the right time zone" thing too, when we fly over the Atlantic. If we stay up til bedtime the day we arrive, and get a good night's sleep, it usually does the trick. Even with doing that though, it takes a good 2 weeks to feel normal again!

Well that's a bit of a bigger time adjustment than 3 hours going east! I try to land in the early evening when going overseas so you can be up long enough to eat dinner and go to bed "on time". First time I went, on that HS band trip, we landed at like 9am and then went on a BUS tour of London. In the rain. Needless to say the entire band of teenagers slept on the bus, didn't see a thing and were out of wack at bedtime.

Hence the visit to that pub....

Hey at 16, I thought it was going uphill! All depends on your POV...

I meant the excesses of fun and rolicking. The debauchery---- Ohhhh, the debauchery. I had so much fun! :rotfl:

Yes. The debauchery!

I have a funny story about that trip and about just how small the world really is. We are in Paris, having just given a concert at the Luxembourg Gardens, cleaned up and are out to eat. Somewhere very fancy, where I think every teen ordered Steak and Pomme Frites.

I go to the restroom. And run into a girl I went to Jr. High with. Who is not on our trip. And of course all I could remember about her (besides her first name) is what she wrote in my 8th grade annual.

"I hope your life is as long as a roll of toilet paper".

Funny what sticks with us!

:lmao: That is hilarious!!

Even funnier that you should choose the word stick with us! All I can picture is toilet paper sticking to my shoe as I exit the opera!! :rotfl2:

When we left All Star Music we were giddy. Like we had a bonus prize of some sort. All of a sudden our lost day was filled with endless possibilities. What would we do? We strolled by the pool. I am not sure but I think it was the Calypso pool. I remember seeing a cute pool bar with exotic looking concoctions thinking that would be good if the night ended early. I also remember thinking the pool looked really fun but it just wasn’t warm enough. Given our late breakfast we weren’t really hungry yet. We did peek at the food court and I do recall being distinctly unimpressed. It looked…like a food court. Overpriced and…like a food court. Realizing that there were buses to take us to the parks for free and we wouldn’t have to deal with a bit of navigation or parking, we headed out to the bus lines feeling very pleased with ourselves and like we were going on an adventure. On a whim we decided to go to MGM. Why not? We knew next to nothing about this park. Scratch that. We knew nothing. Other than the name had something to do with the MGM movie studio. Which for some reason still makes me think of the Wizard of Oz.

It sounded kind of boring but what the heck. Our thinking was that it might be our only chance to go there, we had one day at Kennedy, a water park day , a IOA day which left only 4 for Disney and we weren’t sure how those days would play out, we were guessing we’d want a down day in there somewhere…7 straight days of parks sounded like a bit much. Our agenda was to go wherever my mother told us to, our only rouge activity was the day trip to Canaveral which was a non negotiable for Jeff!

Boarding the bus was a trip. Though I’d been before it is different, driving through the property on Disney transportation. It is also very different going with kids, versus without and this was the first time with the kids and the first real “park” trip that they’d be old enough to sort of remember. It really felt like we were on vacation, in a very different way than when we’d drive ourselves to places. It was fun to see all 3 of the All Star properties; we decided ours was definitely the best (although they all looked like giant motels on the outside, the inside really wasn’t bad at all). Arriving quickly, or so it seemed, we picked up our tickets and entered the park. Charmed beyond belief at the entry. Maybe we are suckers for old Hollywood, maybe it’s the West Coast influence, I don’t know but we just loved it from the get go.

Completely lost, and not really caring that we were….we wandered, reading our maps as we went. Eric was the map king. If Evan’s theme was hugs…Eric’s was maps. He was OBSESSED with maps. Any time we were in line he’d be on the ground, map unfolded, plotting…something. What I don’t know. He couldn’t read. We’d have to take the maps away so the kid would actually walk, otherwise he’d try to read and walk, not a good combo!

If something sounded fun, we did it. No agenda, no plan, just wandered and did whatever appealed when we saw it. First up, Star Tours. Wandering through the Streets of America, ToT. Yes we were those parents. We took a 4 and 5 year old on ToT…Eric was not exactly happy about it and there was deep fear we’d not only scarred him for life but had ruined his willingness to try new things for the rest of the trip. Thankfully that wasn’t the case but the kid really didn’t trust us for the rest of the trip when we tried to tell him “It was no big deal”.

We didn’t really get the whole FP timing thing but the park wasn’t crowded so it wasn’t an issue. We didn’t know about child swap so instead Jeff “tested” RRC while I hung with the boys. In about 3 hours we had a semi decent snapshot of the park and enough to know that we really liked it and we’d be coming back. The park was closing at 8 but we had napped and felt like we could keep going. So we did! Consulting our map to see what was still open and who might have food we hopped to Epcot, giddy with the fact that we could hop, that was a completely new experience too.

The plan was to mosey our way over to the WS. I didn’t know much, scarred for life by the Ex SIL’s margarita march I'd never actually eaten there but I knew there was food to be had! On the way….Mission Space for Evan and Jeff (Eric wasn’t tall enough and again, didn’t know about the child swap), and Test Track for all of us. WOW. What a high. By now it was 9, 6pm back home and we needed dinner. Strolling out to the WS we noticed that there were kiosks everywhere. They weren’t on our map so we were confused but checked them out. They had food and drink from all kinds of countries not listed on our maps. Everything seemed to be a small sized portion and not inexpensive but the array was impressive.

How fun! It was perfect. I had dinner from New Zealand, crab cakes and a to-die-for Sauvignon Blanc. Jeff got pasta in Italy, as did the boys, the servings were small, but perfect, especially for the kids. Jeff found a great beer in Germany and all was well with our world.

As we are eating, we notice the banners.

Epcot Food and Wine Festival.

What luck! Who knew?

If you are going to fall into the category of the blind leading the blind, stumbling to the world without a care, or an ADR, and happen to be traveling with 21 other people may I just say…the Epcot Food and Wine Festival is heaven on earth. I imagine it’s Heaven on Earth no matter what but I can’t imagine how difficult dining might have been on that trip, without it.

Pure.Dumb.Luck.

Jeff and I each went for a second course, mussels and another glass of the Brancott for me, no idea what Jeff had other than I’m sure it was Pasta. Or sausage of some sort! And beer. I actually brought 2 bottles of the wine home with me purchased later in the trip, that's how much I loved that wine. Back in the day when you could carry a bottle of wine on the plane.

The boys found some kind of art center (or so we thought) and colored masks on sticks with Chinese characters on them and then proceeded to hold them in front of their face for the rest of the night, pantomiming with each other, giggling, jousting, full of joy.

As we enjoyed our food, sipped our drinks, watched the boys with their masks, Jeff and I both went on and on and on about how fun (and unexpectedly so) our evening had been. All of a sudden we realized a crowd had begun to form around us. Milling people everywhere. Why? What’s happening?

Cue music.

Illuminations!!!!!!!!!!!!

What a change from our morning. What a moment. How magical. A giant globe all lit up with pictures. Mystical. As if all the stars had aligned and decided we needed, deserved, unexpected fireworks and dining delights, that everywhere we turned we were surprised and delighted. I think our complete lack of expectations, of utter naivete truly was a blessing. We could not have been more open to all that we could experience.

I am sure at that moment I looked nothing like a princess.

I felt like one.

I know two little boys who felt as if they’d been dropped into a fairy tale.

Oh, I loved this update, Cynthia!!! What a way to experience a trip to Disney -- it sounds absolutely liberating to just do whatever as the whim strikes! Not to mention how absolutely perfect it all is to know that you stumbled upon the Food and Wine Festival AND Illuminations!!! I hope all this wonderful luck continued for the rest of the trip! :goodvibes

Great, great updates Cynthia! I love hearing about past trips.

Jeff and I had been dating for about a year and a half. We were getting married 2 weeks after the trip and were in the middle of trying to sell 2 homes and build a new one. To say it was nutty, and stressful, would be putting it mildly. Jeff is from a small family, just he and his brother. My family is a clan. A close knit loud mouthed debate with you to death walk through fire for you but don’t get in our way….kind of clan. A fair amount of opinions and strong personalities.

This sounds exactly like my family. And Scott's family is very quiet, so it was definitely like walking into a foreign country for him, as well!

I left a comment on your shutterfly page. The sample pages are really pretty! Will you be adding more? Definitely send me a link when you get them on Etsy. Or pm me. I don't really have any good suggestions for you, but trying to think of what I look for when I choose scrapbook papers, a few things occurred to me. I tend to choose patterns and colors that will not look too busy, and compete for attention with my photos. So, I lean towards analogous color schemes rather than something with a lot of contrast. I probably pick papers with small scale patterns more often than those with large bold patterens, again for the same reason. Not sure if that is helpful.

I saw your mention on Liesa's tr about a job interview - did you go yet? It sounded intriguing.... Of course, you've got to stick with your business idea too, now that you've told us all about it!

What a great update!
Isn't it wonderful to not have a plan sometimes? Your update makes me miss the days when ADRs and dining plans weren't an issue.

I wish US would have the same fastpass system as Disney. That way, you wouldn't have to stay onsite. But I guess their fastpass system is the equivalent to EMH.

Yup, two trips a month a part :scared1: My friend, Denise, and I are spending 5 days in Disney between our birthdays. She's never stayed onsite and has never been to Epcot, AK, or DHS. I'm excited about playing tour guide. And excited about doing Disney adult-style.
