Life’s too short...to never sleep in a treehouse! 8/27 TR is up! Link in siggie

Where does the line form for orders?

I got Pampered Chef stuff to buy from Glennbo's wife (we need new kitchen stuff)

Now I gotta buy stuff from you! It is definitely a niche market that many larger companies already do and do well. Your POD will be how you are able to personalize your designs and "handcraft" them.

Start up costs....hmmm
Website design....hmmmmm
Advertising/marketing...hmmmm

How EXCITING and scary at the same time!

Kudos to you Cynthia!! :thumbsup2 I have tried to come up with an idea of something I could sell or a business idea for many years. It really needs to be something you enjoy. Good for you for coming up with something and taking that big step! :cool1:

Thanks!

I think it's a balance of enjoyment and actually believing in it. I've always struggled with the last part.

The biggest joy for me has been taking the idea of re-creating something for someone but adding something to it that just seemed fun and cool at the time to make it a little more unique and then seeing that idea just GROW.

Her paper turned into about 4 related projects for save the date cards, save the date stickers, invitations, etc, all which got their own "tweak" and saved her hours of cutting! Not to mention minimizing wasted paper.

WOW!!

I think what you are doing is amazing! As someone who scrapbooks, alot, I think you could really go somewhere with your idea.

Being able to do something you enjoy AND get paid for it, is a wonderful thing.:wizard:

You go girl!! by the way, that is the first, and only time I will ever use that phrase...but I couldn't think of anything else.

I'd like to see a picture of the dress and it's inspiration.

Oh, imagine the disney things you could create!;)

Well sadly I won't be able to really do all that much Disney wise. Everything is copyrighted or trademarked within an inch of its life. There will be some things I can do that will work but it will be more thematic than truly Disney if that makes sense.....

I am definitely going to need feedback so as a scrapper I'll be hitting you up for it!

If that's ok :)

It's one thing to make it for personal use, another to sell it for a profit! It's funny, I don't really scrapbook. I do make a fair amount of cards though and you use scrapbook paper for them and it was the wedding invitation paper that spurred it but what I love about the concept is all the potential extensions of it both in print form and digitally.

I've often been so frustrated with traditional scrapbook paper as well as digital thinking...I like this about it but wish it had.....or I love this design but I want it in xx colors.....I've considered making paper before but there is so much already out there I just couldn't see where it would be compelling enough on its own. I think I have come up with a good way to combine some economy of scale in the design, with the customization aspect in a manageable way.

I'll post pictures of the paper set and the dress. Hopefully the dress will fit and I'll like it in person, it won't be here for about a month but in concept it looks perfect for what I had in mind.

Of course now I'm thinking about the shoes to go with it!

:rotfl:

Wow, good for you!! I am also a scrapper (not big but I enjoy it) I think if you really enjoy what you are creating it comes through in the product! I would also like to see the dress and bag!

Thanks Mary, I hope so! I completely agree that the best products show the passion put in to them in the end result.

Fingers crossed that I can deliver on that promise.

Right now, you remind me of a scene in "You've Got Mail."

"Closing the shop is the brave thing to do...oh, I know, you don't feel that way right now, you feel like a big fat failure! But you are daring to dream that your life could be different..."

Or something to that effect.

Cynthia, you are daring to dream that your life could be different. It is always scary. It will always take a lot of work, and it will always seem a little crazy at first. Until you make it your new normal, you will be heading into the unknown.

I think it's a wonderful idea. I think you're creative and you've got the business savvy to back yourself up. GO FOR IT!!!!

I love that scene!

I am terrified about the financial impact and the fear is more losing ground on the job search than it is about doing this per-se. I am very lucky to have had the business background and have written many a business plan.

Things happen for a reason and they happen when they are meant to and I do feel like a bigger hand is at work.

It really helps that I do feel like I know what to do and have a good feeling for how to do it, and while I am sure some of the details will be new and freak me out I do have an amazing array of resources to use and have (for the most part) what suppliers I will need already lined up and know where I need to look for the rest. I do question whether I can make a living on it but at this point I don't have much to lose by trying and everything to gain!

Of course the fact that I am a huge online shopper doesn't hurt either!

:rotfl:

The perfectionist in me just wishes I knew more than I do on the design side from a trick and tips standpoint but I will get there.

Sounds like a great idea and I know you are the person who can make it work. I wish you all the success in the world! Go for it!

Thanks!

We will see :goodvibes

If nothing else it will be good knowing that I tried! I have always envied people that were doing something they had a true passion for. I love the idea of capturing something special for people in a unique way.

I went back to school to be a teacher in my mid thirties. Now I work part-time teaching Kindergarten and I love it. My hubby quit working for the "Man" and opened up his own business around the same time. He's never been happier. We don't make the kind of money we used to but we are there for our kids, and have learned to scale back and live on a smaller income. To quote Martha "It's a good thing." I hope it works out for you and your family as well.

It is a good thing. I took about 6 months when I was laid off a couple of years ago to write and just be home with the boys. It was, and continues to be "a good thing". I am excited. I think it's been very helpful that it's been gradual. I had a decent severance package, then did some contract work, then went back full time, then the move to commission. So it's been a gradual income decrease and we've been slowly able to adjust a lot of things so it doesn't really feel like we've cut back at all. Even though we have. Hugely.

When I step back and look at the fact that we are surviving on 1/4 of my old income and really don't feel like we've cut back and are ok...it's a darn good feeling!

Wow! How exciting. Well you have to do what keeps you invested, happy and motivated, and while it is a little scary the best things in life have to start with that first step! Good for you!

Well, as my one sister says....she likes me a lot better when I'm not working.

:rotfl:

And she doesn't really mean not working, she means not working in the big company machine....

I'm so excited for you! :thumbsup2 I know it's scary but all the hard work will be worth it. :goodvibes

And TK, you got that quote right on. One of my favorite movies.

Thanks!

Now now, be careful, you aren't supposed to actually try to sell anything on the boards, you (I mean I) will get spanked!

You need custom scrapbook paper? I have a better idea. How about a custom trip binder! Made of course with a custom paper design but on all three sides....

I can just see it in the pictures now...

:goodvibes

Thankfully I can do, and have direct experience with all but #1 and have a pretty good feel for what #1 will be. The site will not be my dream site to start. While I can design it, I can't do the build myself and do not want to pay anyone to do it. With enough time and homework I could probably figure it out, it is something I'd like to be able to do (even though the code makes my eyes glaze I do "get" how it works) but it's just not viable.

I am fortunate to be in a very creative community, have been in sales, marketing and digital media my entire career and do have a few connections that will help quite a bit both from a resource and a "trade" standpoint!

I think so often I take that background for granted and despite feedback from many I shrug it off as being nothing but then I'm at things (like the pta budget meeting lol...) that remind me I do have a clue about a couple of things!

That said I believe I'll be able to do a starter site that won't be entirely lame and heavens knows I've purchased digital papers from many a site that I do think is lame!

We will see....

Cynthia, I think it is so cool and brave that you are starting your own business!!! I just know you are going to be a huge success once you get started!!! :goodvibes

I had an inkling that your news might be something along these lines. Very, very cool! You have the perfect mix to do this, and do it well. Personality, connections, know-how, equipment, it's all there!! :thumbsup2

So fun, so scary, a bunch of hard work!! Are we even going to still see you?!

(And I KNEW the bag had something to do with it.)

Brave? Or desperate?

:rotfl:

Thanks!

I'm just happy Jeff is on board with it.

Yeah Jordan -- be careful. You'll get us all spanked!

perhaps that's what he was aiming for..

:confused3

I will be careful.

I thought I'd save you the trouble..

now now....clean thread, remember?

I actually was "reported" once for trying to sell stuff on the DIS. I had my DISign link (which are clearly free downloads :confused3) which was a banner at the time and somehow, on a different thread and forum someone thought I was trying to sell stuff. Mod had been on vacation, came back, saw the complaint and shut it down and reported me without even checking the site!

:headache:

So I'm a wee bit paranoid. That and I've been fighting with Zazzle this week but that's another subject entirely!

You will see me plenty! Way more than if I got "real" job

the Yurt though, that may have inspired me. It's right next to my computer!

Hi Cynthia...

Didn't read today't post yet, but wanted to stop in and say "HI"! Will stop back tomorrow and see what's up. too tired right now! Last TR to check tonight and then off to bed!

I'm picturing Ving Rhames and Bruce Willis in Pulp Fiction. Hopefully I don't have to describe the scene any more than that.

Nope.

You aren't missing anything.

Then again I am not a Q fan.

I have one word for Mr. Tarentino.

Gratuitous.

and he thinks he's pretty neat. Which never sits well with me.

I'm just happy Jeff is on board with it.

THat's so, so important! Can't be having disgruntled hubby's now, can we?!

That's great to know, that the Little House on the Prairie did something good!! :goodvibes

Not a clue what you're talking about...

EEEEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

I did not know that.
