Let's Talk Remodeling

I think we've figured out that we want to go with a slate bathroom :) Since there is already that stone thing around the tub that we want to keep, we think the slate will match well.
I think we're going to put the tile around the perimeter of the bathroom twice then a section of the trim and then the tile on a diagonal for the middle of the floor. The shower will have the tile then a section of trim at the top and one on the bottom (if it isn't too expensive to do it like that. If it is then we won't have the trim on the floor and just in the shower.

Syrreal, I like the slate and the trim! Great choices!

You know what I thought of as soon as I saw your tub? Columns. I've seen some really pretty tubs that have sheet rock arches over them, with columns on either side. It's hard to describe. I want to do it in my bathroom, but I know it would really raise our budget.

I'll try to find a picture. :)

ETA: Like this! I so want to do this in my bathroom!

Columns would be neat but they wouldn't match the style we're going for. Since the house is Tudor and could very easily pass for medieval with all the stone inside it, we want to keep that kind of going in the new bath.

That pictiure is really awesome too. I wish I had windows right next to the tub like that!

I am totally getting a new tub too. We already picked out our sinks and faucets and I think I know what tub I want. I wasn't going to go with a jacuzzi style tub but those were the only ones I found deep enough to make me happy. It's not really a tub I can drown in because the length is normal but at least it has a good soaking depth.

I think it would take a pretty traditional house to pull off the columns. I have the house, I just don't want to spend the money!

Pretty selections! Very clean lines!

Bill, you're awfully quiet? How's it going there Bill? ;)

I'm feeling abit overwhelmed. They've been working every day and getting a lot done but then I see how much more needs to get done. So far they've...

Demoed the kitchen taking it all down to the bare walls.

Removed the wood stove from the kitchen, taking down the brick facing, the stove pipe in the ceiling and the raised platform it was on.

They removed all of the old paneling from the dining room and kitchen.

They took down the pass through area between my kitchen and dining room and now it's totally open.

They took down the outside front wall of my house.

They restuded the water damaged dining room wall.

They put up new vinyl siding to replace the siding taken down.

They installed all new windows.

They put up new sheetrock over the entire dining room.

They put up new sheetrock on 2 walls of my kitchen where they took down the paneling and woodstove.

They took out a door in my kitchen that they're replacing.

They installed a new gas line for my new gas stove.

They moved some wall outlets around and installed a new power line for my new range hood.

They removed all of the old vinyl flooring so they can install new laminate over top of it.

The new cabinets have been delivered and are spread all over my living room.

Today's plans are to prime the walls for painting and start hanging cabinets.

I still haven't picked out my colors yet but I've narrowed it down to 3. I really should decide on it soon.

Speaking of colors. What should be done about the ceiling? I assumed some sort of off white not a real white white. On the other hand maybe it should just be a standard flat white. What have you suys done? I plan on painting the walls a shade of tan.

Sherwin Williams has a line of ceiling paints. I believe they're all on one paint chip, so it should be easy to pick one.

Whew!!! Quite a lot going on over there Bill!!!! Hang in there it sounds like the job is moving along at a really good pace!!

As far as the ceiling color, anything goes these days! Ceilings in accent colors, matching the walls, really anything. So far I've stuck with a regular ceiling white. If we ever get to redoing our den, I think I'm going to match the ceiling with the walls with a buttery gold color.

Overwhelmed isn't the word!! Wow - great progress and fast too!

How does the area look now that the pass through area has been taken out?
Is it hard to get used to?

Took down the outside front wall of your house?

Bill, I'm tired just reading your list. phew! Keep us posted when you can.

I've been wondering some things, that I hope you don't mind me asking. If its too personal, just tell me so. I've been wondering how you deal with all this remodeling disruption since you are in a wheelchair? I'm sure you had everything in places you could get to it before & now who knows where stuff is? Do you live alone?

Are you doing anything in your kitchen that is more handicap accessible that are changes that could help/benefit everyone? I'm familiar with items in a bathroom model that everyone should consider for later on / elderly (like extra blocking in the wall for attaching grab bars later if needed; wider doorways).....but not so much in the kitchen. I was just curious.

We had tried to think of many of these things in the condo we were going to build in case my parents moved in with us. So we thought of the bathroom ones, but never thought of much in the kitchen / laundry.

Thanks guys. I was talking to the painter about this today and he said there was a standard ceiling white and I thought...Great one less decision! :rotfl2: So I'm going with standard flat ceiling white.

Actually they only took down one half of the front wall but all of the siding.

I do live alone and am doing fine so far. Of course I'm living off of the TV dinners I cook in the microwave I set up in the living room or off of carry out food. :rotfl2: The contractor has been really good about cleaning up at the end of the day and making sure I have a path to anything I'd need. All of my stuff that was in the cabinets is in boxes in the living room and it'll stay there until it's time to put it all away in the new cabinets.

I did consider some of the extras to make it easier for me in a wheelchair. Lowering the top cabinets to make reaching them easier sounds nice but then you cut of the counterspace underneath of them and my washer door is also under the cabinets and it wouldn't open then. I considered removing the cabinet under the sink to make it easier to wash dishes but I decided it was better to have the storage space for cleaning supplies. In the end I didn't make any accessibility changes. I figured I've been using a wheelchair for 30 years and I didn't need it before so I wasn't going to worry about it now.

I just got back from the laundromat, I haven't had a working washer and dryer since construction started last Wednesday. I think this is probably the first time in 25 years or so since I've been to a laundromat. :rolleyes1 It'll be nice to have clean clothing and it was great to wash 4 loads of laundry at a time.

Wow Bill! That is a lot of work!! I'm glad that they are doing it all pretty fast for you :) With all the construction that's gone on at the new house, I can't imagine what it's like to actually live in the house where everything is getting done.

In our neck of the woods we've had some pretty good process too.

We've picked out our bathroom vanity cabinets and marble top.

We ordered our sinks, sink faucets, bathtub faucet, and shower. (Which have aleady changed from the ones I posted a couple of days ago)

They already painted DS's bedroom (we picked "Christopher Robin's Swing) as the color. It's a lot like DS's bedroom color now..on purpose :) )

They took down the icky blue not-all-the-way-around trim/chair rail thing that was in the dining room. They also took out the dining room carpet and painted it.

Removed the carpet from the guest bath and the mirrored wall tiles too.

Finished demo-ing the master bath.

Primed the master bedroom.

We've purchased all the big items for the bathroom remodel. We are waiting on a cabana bath door to come in, then the project can begin. Hopefully, it will be here by Friday, so they can start on Monday.

I love the countertops (Kohler) that we bought for the vanities. They are cast iron and quite heavy. The color we chose is Sea Salt.

The vanity (2) American Standard in Tobacco:

We thought about getting one of those whirpool tubs, but heard about possible problems with mildew and so on. I already have enough things to clean in my house. So, we chose a regular tub from American Standard (Americast).

Here is the tile we chose for the walls, the color is Augusta Nut: (9x13 for the walls and 20x20 for the floor in a diamond pattern). It's a richer color than it shows in the pics.

We are going to use "windows & tacos" as decorative accents, along with a coordinating listello.

Toilet from Kohler (Leighton) in white:

As for the shower door, I don't know what to do. :confused3 :confused3 We are going to call the company that did our shower door and go from there. :confused3 I still have to decide on mirrors and light fixtures. I didn't like the mirror that matched the vanities.

We've been in our house for 11 yrs. and we are finally going to have the second bath remodeled. I can't wait! It's gonna look great!!!:cool1:

Man... all this work, and I'm still waiting for my estimate! Ooopppsss... it showed up in my in-box as I was typing that! Pray for me!

ETA: Darn! It was just the estimate for the trim/door painting! That was $2,800!!!!!

ETA II: Oh dear God... never mind, I just got it. I have to supply the cabinets, the toilet, the fixtures, the sinks, and the tile, mind you... and my estimate was almost $14k! I need the fainting smilie.

OMG!!!!! :scared1: So that's pretty much just for the labor & installation! I'm so sorry, that has got to be much higher than you were thinking! I guess with all the laborers getting paid higher wages over here, it's now raising costs for you too!

RitaZ, That is all going to look great!

Bill, A lot of great things happening over there! I understand not doing the HA remodel if it's not totally neccesary! We are still struggling with our bathroom plans trying to find places to gain the storage space we are going to lose!

I think we are getting close to actually getting started on our bathroom remodel. I don't know think everyone on now, knows that we are getting a grant from the state, to help with this handicap accessible remodel. So even though they finally approved our contractor over a month ago, the paperwork is still shuffling around state employees desks! We have been working with the state on this for 11 months now! All the rules, regulations & red tape has been extremely frustrating & we haven't even started the remodel yet! And I'm sure when we get the all go from the state our contractor will be tied up.

Yeah, higher is an understatement! I mean my cabinet guy was going to charge us $300 for demo and the contractor has $1,200 for it! :scared1:

The estimate includes the granite and the frameless shower doors, but other than that, it's labor. And of course, I'm busy and DH is swamped with work, so we can't sit down to figure it out.

If I only knew where to have the stuff hauled off to, I'd tear it all out!

After seeing my estimate, I'm thinking of going doorless! :scared1:

I hear ya!:scared1: :scared1:

On one hand, the glass door will show/accentuate the tile work. On the other hand, the thought of having a bath in a tub that's enclosed by a shower door is weird and kind of claustrophic. A shower curtain would be boring. Unless, there are beautiful ones somewhere, which I've never seen.:confused3 :confused3
