Let's Talk Remodeling

Crazy Jeff also said that travertine was "so 80's".

That's what I'm thinking of putting in. :scared: What am I SUPPOSED to be putting in?
BTW, I'm always about 10 yrs behind anyways. lol I don't want to start out 20 yrs behind.

I just put a ton of it in! It'd better be in for a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time. :scared1:

How is everyone doing down in Texas and Louisiana???? It sounds like you are getting SOOOOO much rain from Humberto. I hope it is not affecting anyone too bad.

OK I had my first bump in the road on this phase. The countertop color I wanted is no longer being made.

I wanted the EOS Tropic color since it was dark but had some browns and greens on it. When I picked that color the countertop guy said it was the most popular choice. So of course they discontinued it.

Anyway the closest they have now is Acadia. It's not terrible but I'm one of those types who agonizes over every little shading choice and to go from the above to this just throws me off. Besides they don't have the samples out yet for these so I'm just guessing off of the internet picture.

I hope it turns out for the best. I do need to lighten up the space a bit since I've been choosing darker everything so maybe this is a blessing in disguise.

Bill, did you look at Silestones Rainforest?
http://www.silestoneusa.com/colors/colors.cfm?ColorID=61 Samples on their website stink, but I know I've seen something very similar to what you first picked.
http://images.google.com/images?q=s...&ndsp=20&svnum=10&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&start=0&sa=N

Cambria (quartz) Kensington also is green & brown, but not quite the same.
http://www.cambriausa.com/colordetail.cfm?color=6210&colorname=Kensington

Or is it too late? Decision is made. Or they don't handle other brands?

I haven't heard of EOS. Its that quartz?
Oops, nevermind, I found it. Its solid surface. http://eos-surfaces.com/

Thanks for the suggestions. I've gone all over the board about what countertops to get. First I started with the Wilsonart Laminate, then decided on Silestone, then back to the laminate. When I had my contractor decided upon he talked me into the laminate to save some money I was all set on that but when they came out to measure they told me they didn't do the rounded edges because they tend to peal and instead only did the square edge. Now I KNOW I didn't want to see a seam on the edge. I was adamant about that so they suggested the EOS solid stone as a step up from laminate but not as expensive as Silestone or Granite. Since they had a good color I decided to go with it. Of course now that color is gone.

I'm going to stick with the EOS for now. It's not a perfect color but I'm starting to reach that point where I close my eyes point at something and tell them to install it. I'm tired of making decisions that are probably not going to be what I want anyway once I see it installed and full size.

We got nada from it. Not one drop of rain, but I'm wondering about Shovan.

I don't know anything about soapstone counters, but I do have to say how much I love, love, love transom cabinets. I know they're costly, but if you put a glass door on them with lighting, wow...what a statement. Even if you put a regular door on them, still...quite the look! It dresses everything up.

What I've also seen that I like with a farmhouse looking kitchen are those old-fashioned door latches instead of knobs (if you know what I mean).

Your idea of cream cabinets with a black (distressed) island is right on the money. :thumbsup2 Simply beautiful!

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I definately am going with the period drawer pulls; I know exactly what you are referring to! I was thinking of glass inserts for the transoms, although I might have one or two open with inserts for wine. I need to squeek every bit of space I can out of this kitchen!

Bill, I think that the Acadia is a nice substitute. That EOS Tropical color was pretty sweet too, though. Did it come with the bird? :lmao:

Soapstone counters aren't a big thing here, and I've actually never gotten the opportunity to see them in person. I know a lot of people were putting them in, when I was remodeling my kitchen, on here: http://ths.gardenweb.com/forums/kitchbath/

Your selections sound like they're going to be absolutely beautiful! I agree that soapstone would be a better choice for you too. I have granite, but I also have stainless appliances, so I think it's a good match for us.

You might also want to consider honed granite; it'll be less expensive than soapstone. I think it's gorgeous! :)

I checked out gardenweb; it's a great resource, so thanks! If I didn't go with soapstone, I think I would consider the honed granite. I actually can get installed soapstone for $95 sq ft, which is comparable to granite or silestone.

I love the kitchen you posted, and it is similar to the look I am going for. Except for the white cabinets. I currently have white cabinets, with glass fronts on some of the uppers. They are in perfect shape, but they drive me mad because every speck of everything shows on them. I need cabinets that will hide my messy side, so think that cream might be better for me.

Isn't Jeff on "Flipping Out" something else? I have to admit that his homes are awfully beautiful when complete. But, I guess if I put $1 million into my remodel, my home would look beautiful too! :rotfl:

Hey everyone. I know I've been MIA. It's been really hectic here and I still need to catch up on all the posts since the last time.
Our new deck is almost finished. The only thing left is the gate for the stairs which will be done tomorrow. SO exciting. Here are a few pics of the progress-->

That is a great price for soapstone! I would go for it if it were readily available, affordable, and I really wanted it! :thumbsup2

Oh yeah... he's something else all right! I think he's a bit neurotic, but you're right, his homes come out looking awesome! :)

That is a HUGE deck! It's beautiful! I wish I had an interesting lot, so I could do something like that. :guilty:

I always say, you can never have too many spot for wine. :woohoo:

We've had a lot of rain, but not nearly as bad as the weathermen predicted! I don't think we even had any street flooding! I did get soaked to the skin this morning taking my niece to school!

I was glad to hear that Houston had ended up on the "good" side of the storm & missed out on the worst of it!!! :goodvibes

Am I There Yet, We will be heading over to see the Astros two weeks from now!!! We've gone twice before to a suite that DH was able to get invited to, it's so much fun! We'll probably be staying downtown, if you have any suggestions for good Tex-Mex and a good Steak restaurant, let me know!

Now I going back to see what all the pretty pics were all about!

I know what you mean. The new color is still a nice choice.

Okay, this is a pic of one of the latest bathrooms that my contractor has done (I hope it's okay with homeowner to post it here!). Obviously the shower glass hasn't been installed yet, but this is identical to how my bathroom is set up, with the exception of the vanity placement next to the shower.

Do you see where there is granite underneath and on the window sill? I want the granite decking, but I think I'd like the cabinet panels on the tub apron, but mosaic above the decking and on the window sills.

I would like to carry the mosaic as an accent into the shower at the same level, and add another strip of mosaic around where the accent tiles are in this shower. This way, I'd have two accent strips inside the shower, 12" tall.

Would it look better with the mosaic on the tub apron too?

Am I making any sense?

I love this bathroom, but it's a little too monochromatic for me, although I LOVE this granite. I want something to break up the colors to make the granite "pop". Everything I pick will be still be neutral, but will add a little bit of different texture.

I need to decide, because using this much granite could bump me into more than a slab, and that would cost $$$. Mosaic may save me some money.

Here's another shot that shows the granite better. I'm really liking this granite!

Bill, so sorry about your countertop problems! I hate to throw anything else into the mix, but have you looked into Corian?
