Crankyshank, lack of paragraph breaks is my biggest pet peeve. And I don't care if the paragraph breaks are in the correct place--just stick them in every once in a while to make it easier to read. It's only to make the posts more readable.

Now, this I 1000% agree with!!!!

And I'm not picking on people either. If you know where the keys are, you sure know where the enter button is.

The thing is - I try, just like you do. I proof my posts before I send them, but my brain is "seeing" the missing word. For some reason, I catch them later. In the heat of the moment, the word is there. I've even slowed down and proofed my posts, reading them like the village idiot and still, the missing word is there.

But in all other ways, I'm totally perfect. That is my only flaw. Trust me.

MAKmom, what you need to do is watch those involved in the thread and catch them in a mistake! It's fun! Then create a thread just for them!

Seriously, I don't get those threads either. As long as I know what someone is trying to get across, I don't care if there are typos or not.

I'm notorious for totally leaving out words. At first, when I'd go back and re-read my posts, I'd be mortified, then I developed the WGAC attitude. (PM me if you want to know what my acronym means)

I do the same thing. During college I had to have DH (then BF) or anyone else to proof everything because I know how it should look and read it that way. For some reason when posting I don't catch the mistake until I re-read it when it is posted.

One big mistake I always make is start of using ( and then forget to finish it.

I also tend to run on my sentences while posting.

I agree space is important, caps help (don't do all caps unless you are shouting) and try to use some punctuation. (or at least I try to as a curtisy to others. ) I hate it when I spell check and it replaces a misspelled word (but one you can understand) with the wrong word. Now I admit that is my fault for trying to go too fast, but still I hate it.

I have to tell you guys this has been a weird few days for me. You think you have put your childhood behind you then it all comes back. I had a great childhood but I did have to go to the "special" class for reading & speech. My reading comprehension is great. My spelling is so bad I have to ask my kids for help sometimes.

I never realized how some people see bad spellers. The your lazy, etc., is a slap in the face. As an adult I was Diagnosed as ADD which explained so much of my frustration in school.

I've never made fun of anyone on this board (or anywhere else) for making spelling mistakes and I never will. Anyone with dyslexia has my full and complete respect and sympathy. I am really grateful, however, to a high school teacher who pounded written communication skills into a bunch of kids who didn't have learning disabilities; we just didn't want to learn to spell.

We thought she was the meanest teacher on the planet for flunking any paper, no matter how long or well written, if there were more than three spelling errors in it. I still reach for a dictionary or spell-checker every single time I'm not positive that I've spelled a word correctly, because in high school that was easier than getting an "F" in English. Thank God for teachers who stick to their guns.

That's what I was trying to do, but you had a "C" there. I am a rule follower, and if you said C, all be damned, I'm going to drive myself crazy trying to come up with all kinds of C words. And I did come up with C words, just nothing that made sense.

I teach reading(decoding) and spelling(encoding) to dyslexics. I have a dyslexic daughter. Most kids I work with have above average IQ's. They are stong in other areas but spelling and reading are tough for them. I've never failed to get one reading, but spelling remains a problem for almost all of them.


The DIS is an internet board meant for entertainment. I have never had the desire to belittle another person by correcting their grammar or spelling. I'd much rather people participate with less than perfect spelling then to become so self conscious that they won't participate at all.

I have never been dx with dyslexia, I think I mildly affected by it (as I suspect many people are.) My brother was, (his name is Tim, he used to spell it Mit).

He never really ever got much help with it either. He never finished college and has a much lower opinion of his own intelligence then his actual functioning (He is very smart.)

However, after reading your post I find myself wishing someone "taught" me encoding more. I am starting to think my public school education has done me a injustice (even with 2 undergrad and a post grad degree.) If I had better help younger instead of just being past and never really having anyone help me I might of done much better. I am a great reader and knew how before entering Kindergarden.

I wonder if there is hope for me yet? One thing that has actually helped improve my spelling is I am fluent in ASL (American Sign Language) and I finger spell. Finger spelling helps me spell better. My fingers actually know how better then my mind sometimes (the same goes for typing, I can type much faster and better then hand writing. I hate to write by hand.)

I have no idea if the above word is spelled right, but it doesn't matter, because I have no idea what it means

I thought the thread on spelling was just a tongue and cheek thread. Now I feel bad that I posted on it. I make my fair share of spelling errors and typos, and really felt I was making fun of myself, since the two mistakes I pointed out, had both been recent ones I made.
Sorry if my post made anyone feel bad. It was not at all meant that way. I type fast, in between work, and I'm terrible at looking back and proofing..so if anyone goofs on typo's..I think I'm at the head of the line. (And I almost always put a quote mark, instead of an apostopy and I'm usually too lazy to go back and fix it..and I don't care of anyone makes fun of it either).

i have the same problem.

i've been made fun of for my spelling before here and other places online. i spend a lot of time proofreading my work for school, but obviously i'm not going to get other people to proofread my posts on the dis.

i'm not a lazy person. i am graduating with my MA in may and i got it as a result of three years of hard work in school at the same time i was working a full-time job. in the fall i'm starting a Ph.D. program at a top 20 school in my field.

i have never understood what the big deal is with the spelling police here. sometimes i think it is a way for insecure people to feel better about themselves. at any rate, you will just feel better about it is you can accept yourself for who you are and not worry about other people.

The funny thing is I thought a post & an IM was an acceptable place for all kinds of crazy writing styles. My teenager always used LOL, & phonetic spelling and short cuts like cause for because.

Maybe the spelling police are older. The teenagers I'm thinking of are adults now.

Wow! Have things gotten so slow on the DIS that people need to start threads making fun of how people spell - and their use of grammar?

Sheesh! Some people have legitimate reasons for those difficulties - some people are just bad typists - some people are rushed, for whatever reason - and some people just don't care because they didn't realize they were going to be "graded" on what they post here or how they post it..

For those who simply don't care - or would like to NOT care - I have a little Valium on hand.. Every bit as good as the Xanax...

Lighten up people! It's just a fun place to chat.. Let's not go out of our way to make people feel inadequate - okay?

Oh..and I know that I drive some people here crazy because I always end my sentences with..... But you know what? I didn't care when it was brought to my attention - and I care even less now - thanks to the little "V"..

I'll admit that I don't read all threads on the CB, but I have never seen anyone belittle anyone else for their spelling or grammar.

However, I have posted on other threads how annoying I find it when people get certain phrases wrong - but never as a complaint to anyone and I've never said anything to anyone about their spelling.

I get enough wrong myself, without correcting others! - I do proofread my BF's essay's and projects though.

I just think it would be plain rude to have a go at someone over their spelling.
