Hi, my name is ceiligh1 and I can not spell. I work at it but I am not getting better. When I first joined the DIS I would lurk because I didn’t want to risk not spelling a word incorrectly. That lasted about 2 years. Now I post but depending on what I write I will submit with errors or I will use MS word to correct then cut and paste to the board. It takes more time and I always worry about the mistakes I may be including in the post. Sometimes I will even not use the wording or words I would like because I don’t know how to spell them. I deal with it. If other people have a problem with my spelling and grammar then they can just skip my post and move on to the next person. I will not be hurt by that and they will not have to deal with reading all the errors.

Almost all the way down on the left is Toolbar. That includes the spell checker. It's easy to install and has never caused me any problems.

Here's what I find mind-boggling about the DIS:

Apparently it's "too PC" to complain that a white hotel guest mistook you for a maid, because you are black.

It's "too PC" to find offense in an obviously racist joke about blacks and watermelons.

It's "too PC" to prefer that religious observances not take place in public schools.

But apparently it isn't too PC to consider "bad spelling" some kind of ADA-protected special class.

I am pretty sure my grammar is worse then my spelling. I don't care this is a message board and I will type how I talk. Some people can spell/use grammar correctly and others can't spell/use grammar correctly. I don't see why that is such big deal!! Yes I did graduate from college a major university in fact and no I don't think that means I know my english. It not like they taught us grammar in college, I wasn't an english major!

That you'd actually be boggled by this? Seriously - there's gonna be about 1001 points of views on boards such as these. Youre honestly gonna get all worked about it? Why? And I believe any non-spelling fools out here in cyber-land, get your point. You can not stand to see words spelled wrong!! Dont spell wrong around you!!! If youre going to post in a thread youre on, triple check it!!! We get it.

Oooh...I cringed at this! I am not one to play the "disabilty" card, but I'm going to here.

My son has a very high IQ, he's very smart. Unfortunatley he has a learning disability that is called coding and encoding. Ask him a question and he will tell you the answer in such detail, ask him to write it and you won't know what he's talking about, if you can even decipher the spelling.
Is he less intelligent than you or I? Nope, smart as a whip.
It's too bad that that people are still judging a book by its cover.

I have no clue how the PC-ness you are talking about relates to this post.

No one said anything about ADA protection. It just isn't nice to constantly nit-pick people about something they would love to change. It is like making fun of people with bad vision or hearing loss...sure there are glasses and hearing aids, just like we have dictionaries and spell check but they aren't always 100%. Sometimes the perscription is wrong.

I just don't like being called lazy because I make spelling errors on a message board (one that provides NO spell check). And I'm on a Mac using Safari so the Google toolbar is out too.

I just wanted to point out that using a dictionary or spell check seem like easy fixes to people who don't have a problem. When you do have a problem (I have dyslexia and an coding and encoding disability) those seemingly easy fixes aren't that easy.

FWIW - I have 2 college degrees, one of which is in the writing intensive Journalism. In both HS and college I was entitled to learning disability accomidations. Yet, I never took advantage of any of them. Yes, in classes and in professional work I am more careful than I am on an internet board that doesn't have available spell check tools.

I also don't think people realize how insensitive they are being. I would love to be able to spell w/out spending forever combing the dictionary. Or looking up spell check suggestions because I'm not sure what spelling is the definition I want. It just gets very old very quickly. Everyone always has a comment. It's annoying.

No - the best part of Xanax is - you wont CARE if your husband likes the new you / old you / or you at all. You wont care if you can spell, or cant... or if you suddenly develop fat fingers and all your posts look like this:

I guess I can see both sides. I will often put the wrong word down or mistype something because my brain operates at a much faster pace than my fingers do. I'm an excellent speller and the importance of proper grammar has been drilled into me since kindergarten because I went to Catholic school.

I think it is important to make yourself easily understood when trying to get your point across, either by written or by spoken word. Consequently I get irritated by posts that have blatant misspellings that are difficult for me to figure out. I am even more irritated by lack of punctuation and paragraphs. I won't read posts that lack paragraph breaks or periods because it makes my eyes cross trying to figure out WTH the person is trying to convey.

So I guess what I am trying to say is that people can be nitpicky and obnoxiously anal about minor spelling mistakes, but others really need to put some thought in how they are expressing themselves if they expect to be understood.

Crankyshank, lack of paragraph breaks is my biggest pet peeve. And I don't care if the paragraph breaks are in the correct place--just stick them in every once in a while to make it easier to read. It's only to make the posts more readable.

Thank You. I did download it. Can it be used with AOL if you sign on to AOL? I did find it on my web browser but I really like the AOL connection better.

Anyone who knows me on Dis, knows I can't spell. So far most people have been pretty civil about it. Everyone once and while someone is losing an argument and they will start in on spelling. It strikes me as a "I can't think of anything smart enough to say so I will pick on spelling, because at least I can spell" defense.

Lately I have been a bit long winded so I cut and paste into a email and check my spelling that way. The toolbar and Dictionary.com doesn't work too well for me. I might give the google one a try but I am sick of downloading things that don't help.

To everyone who hasn't picked on me for inability to spell, thank you. (Of course if you are Tigger&Belle, then you picked on me for other things, but I love you anyway!)

Oh and I think Dis and other internet type things actually helps me improve my spelling, I have to work at it more. Often with spell check I just try to get close and fix it later. That doesn't actually help you improve.

MAKmom, what you need to do is watch those involved in the thread and catch them in a mistake! It's fun! Then create a thread just for them!

Seriously, I don't get those threads either. As long as I know what someone is trying to get across, I don't care if there are typos or not.

You want to know why?

I'm notorious for totally leaving out words. At first, when I'd go back and re-read my posts, I'd be mortified, then I developed the WGAC attitude. (PM me if you want to know what my acronym means)

The thing is - I try, just like you do. I proof my posts before I send them, but my brain is "seeing" the missing word. For some reason, I catch them later. In the heat of the moment, the word is there. I've even slowed down and proofed my posts, reading them like the village idiot and still, the missing word is there.

But in all other ways, I'm totally perfect. That is my only flaw. Trust me.
