I have to say that in this case the judging a book is really true. No, intelligence has nothing to do with spelling but it has everything to do with knowing that you are a poor speller and doing something about it like using spell check. If you don't take the time to make sure a paper has proper spelling you deserve to have a lower grade. Your son knows he has a problem, just using him as an example, then he needs to make sure something that can spell proofs his paper. This is where intelligence factors into the spelling issue.

He does use spell check when doing a paper at home, but that's not always the case on tests and such at school. No option there. SAT's will be interesting. He has an IEP that helps with these school issues.
He knows his strengths and his weaknesses so thankfully he has chosen a career path (he's 16 now) that does not require alot of spelling and such (he wants to be a chef. A good choice I think).

I do think Cathryn Rose had it right. This is just a message board and not the "real world" so why people feel the need to put someone down here about is just doesn't make sense.

I'm usually good at spelling but when typing I tend to reverse letters a lot. So the word cash will be spelled cahs. I don't do it on purpose, my brain thinks I'm typing it correctly. Sometimes I forget to re-read what I have typed and I have to go back and do an edit. When you see my posts edited that is usually the reason.

Boy,do I agree with Cathryn about the tone of these boards...

I had to understand and keep in mind that spelling and grammar are not related to intellect... it took a lot for me because I'm a maniac about it, it MATTERS to me, but I had to learn that it does not reflect the person.

In real life, looks, height, race, hygiene.. all of these things reflect on how you perceive a person before you know anything about them. In a written relationship, such as this one, we only see their words and the way they convey them and yes, it can give a perception, may it be negative or positive.

As for the OP, I am so sorry if you took this personally. I thought it was a joke. As I found out all too much this week is that so many things can affect perception, and not everyone who has not walked a mile in your shoes can feel or understand it.

Everyone makes a typo now and then, myself included. It's not the end of the world.

"Bad spelling" is not some incurable disease, however. It's extremely easy to fix; just get a dictionary or a spell checker and use it.

I don't think my daughter would get away with telling her teacher "I'm just a bad speller, and you're making me feel bad by giving me a poor grade on this essay."

Or that an employee could say to her boss, "Poor spelling is just a part of who I am and I can't change it, no matter how badly it reflects on the company when I send out error-riddled letters to clients."

I've never posted on a "spelling and grammar police" thread, but when I do see someone make the same spelling error again and again (so it is clearly not a typo), it doesn't make a good impression on me.

On a message board, that may not matter, but there are plenty of other situations in which it will matter very much. I've never hired anyone with a spelling mistake on their resume, for example.

Spelling does count; it shows you can pay attention to details and are careful and thorough.

After reading some of the posts that appeared while I was writing; no, spelling is not related to intelligence. John F. Kennedy was a notoriously bad speller, so they say. Mr. Kennedy, however, would certainly have had a secretary or assistant to proofread for him.

Spelling is not a marker of intelligence, but if a person knows they can't spell, and refuses to use any of the tools available to fix their spelling, that strikes me as lazy.

I know spelling is very important in the real world & it has limited me in my life. On this board bad spelling should be tolerated.

Tell me about the Google spell Check. It will check my post? I have been using the copy & paste into my email to check.

Yes it will check your post, if you go to the Google main page and download their tool bar, they have a spell checker and a pop up blocker. This toolbar does NOT have a bunch of spyware like other downloadable tool bars. I learned about it from Webmaster Alex here on DIS. It works for other chat groups and other online postings (I send basketball information into our paper through their website and it works on that too).

Funny how I came across this post. I misspelt my own screen name now I don't know how to fix. Oh well. Chalk it up to being human, only God is perfect.

OK, you might get the award! You can ask on the tech board if someone will fix the spelling on your screen name. It is against policy to fix it and you might say that you realize that it's against the policy, but throw yourself on the mercy of the tech people and see if they can help you. Hey, it's worth a try and maybe you'll at least get a tag out of it!

I've heard of people spelling something wrong which the tag fairy finds and tags them with.

I'm married to a man who is a high level executive for an international company who couldn't spell his own name if it wasn't printed on his cards. He is surrounded by people who are good spellers(one who routinely checks his emails for him) and he uses Spell Check like an addiction. He is an extremely intelligent man and makes a large salary. He's a good husband and a good lover.

What he lacks in the spelling department, he makes up in other ways

I have the same learning disability that was mentioned earlier. I also have a high IQ. What you posted seems so simple to being who CAN speller but to those of us with learning disabilities it isn't as simple as using spell check or looking something up. Sometimes all I know is the start letter. Try looking something up if you have NO CLUE if it is pre or per or ta/te/ti.

I have a dictionary on my computer. The other day I tried to look up something and it gave me NO choices...that is how bad a butcher things.

Same thing with spell check. I have frequently gotten no 'correct' choices because I haven't been even close to getting the word spelled correctly. Or I get 5 choices and have no clue which one is correct.

Lately I've been using a thesauras and looking up something close I can spell with the hope that it gives me the spelling of the word I want to use.

On a message board it has nothing to do with paying attention to details, being careful or thorough. Term papers, professional documents, ok but internet message boards?

I am tired of the spelling/grammar superiority. I've 'heard' about it my entire life. I know I can't spell. I don't need you to remind me about it.

And what is your point? To try and make someone feel bad? I do sometimes open my trap and hurt posters feelings and when called on it (or when I realize it) I feel bad. It's never my intent (ok, sometimes, but you know when I'm trying to hurt feelings ).

It's not the spelling so much because most of the time it's easy to figure out a mispelled word. Most of the time it's letter reversal or mixed up fingers typing fast.

For me, it's the lack of capitals, punctuation like commas, no apostophes in contractions, that I don't understand. It makes it very hard to read posts when these things are missing. Also, abbrevating words like u, nite, prolly...

And yes, these things to me are important. Sorry about that. I don't care if it is 'just a message board'. That's just an excuse not to take the time. If you don't have the time to look at such things, maybe it's not the right time for you to be posting.

Do NOT let these ridiculous posts bother you!!! I type the way I talk A LOT on here... A LOT!. And "lets" is most certainly the way *most* people talk...

This is not a resume, this isnt a letter to the United Nations, this isnt an appeal for a stay of execution - these are message boards. People need to get a grip on the placement of importance (and peoples feelings, as well! ! ! )

I use wanna, gonna, lets and a gazillion other words IRL and on here - as do many of us. AND I am also aware that many, many words require punctuation... I dont care for typing punctuation... so I dont. You wont see a you're from me, ever...youre, its, theyre, and loads of wanna's and gonna's.

You dont like it? Get yourself all riled up about... it amuses me. HA!

Yep, that's the problem my son has and spell check doesn't always work. Let's say he typed "The see was rough today while we were on the boat." Spell check isn't going to help him because technically, none of the words are spelled wrong. So while spell check is handy, its no a cure-all.

Seriously, I thought this was just a funny thread. I meant no harm. I don't know if there was some history to the OP. Maybe I missed something and now I've hurt feelings. I'm sorry.

Also, a big smile came to my face when you mentioned that I also had "misspelled" my screen name. But that is a long story in which I was required to drop out one of the letters from my first choice (blessedmommy).
