They started working on Friday pouring the concrete. The pad you see in the background is for a future hot tub, they will frame for it too and we will just cover it with decking untill we are ready to put it in

On monday they started framing and it is moving along pretty well.

This is a close up of where the stairs will be inset into the deck

So far I am very happy with the construction. For you builder types the joists are 2x8 on a 16" centers with an 8' span, well above code!

One thing I thought was very cool.. the builder actually writes children's books... he brought one over for DD.. admitting it was a little young for her, I found it on Amazon!

Look like it's going to be a nice size deck. Love the wide steps.

How cool is that the builder writes childrens books.

I hope this doesn't mean your deck is going to be a raft.

Hey Alex.. it is looking good.. I love my deck, it was the best thing we ever did for the house.. I loved the screened in portion.. we are out there all the time entertaining.. Keep us posted with pics please.. I love watching the progress.. :D

The deck is coming along great Alex!

It's going to be mahogany right? How do they attach the wood to the joists, blind screws?

I hope they used enough nails! Up here they would use 3 1/2" standard spiral ardox galvanized nails. Sounds impressive doesn't it?
What do you call them down there , 10 penny or 20 penny nails? :smooth:

Very cool about the kid's book!! :D

It is going to be mahogany.. I don't honestly know how he is going to fasten them! So far the craftsmanship has been great so I am leaving the details in his hands.
The galvanized screw nails are pretty common around here too.

Skip the screws and the nails.

Let's talk about the hot tub..........and watermelon martinis....... :smooth:

Looks great, Alex!

We are planning a new deck next year. Ours is showing it's age. We're planning on going with vinyl - did you consider that in your plans?

Gina - I like the way you think!!!

We did... actually the big debate was between pressure treated, mahogany and trex... the price was a factor but not hugely so. Obviously maintainence and appearance are the other factors. Mahogany won on appearance. The trex would have been TONS easier to keep up!

I am a big fan of low (no!) maintenance....

Thanks Alex, I'll post ours next year...:D

wow! now thats what I call a deck - thats going to be great!

Alex, that looks very cool! you'll have to post pics when it is done, too.

We have a new house with no deck so it's nice to get ideas from other people.

Lucky you, too! Is that an inground pool I see to the right??

actually it is pretty much done! I have some pics on another thread, I will try to find it and bump it up for you
