Lest We Forget............. June 6, 1944

I was going to post about D-Day, but am glad to see someone else beat me to it.

Parents, ask your school aged kids if they know what D-Day is. If the kids don't know, take some time to explain the significance of today's date.

Agree. That was a generation who really DID sacrifice much, and our children (and theirs) should always be mindful of that era.

Ask a WW II Vet about it, then say

Thank you Sir/Ma'm

Back in 1994, my high school choir had the honor of being selected to go to France to sing for the 50th anniversary of D-day ceremonies. We got to visit Omaha Beach and there was a strorm approaching. It was very dark and ominous. It was the trip of a lifetime. God bless all those who serve(d) our country.:thumbsup2

This day always makes me remember my beloved grandfather who was on the beach at Normandy for D-Day. I'm proud to be his granddaughter for so many reasons but I'm always extra proud of him on June 6.

Today is my birthday. I knew from a young age I was born on D-Day.

I am ashamed to say that until I saw it portrayed in movies, I didn't really understand what our brave soldiers went through.

I honestly feel that generation of Americans was the best generation our country has produced.

Hmmm, I think tonight would be a good time to watch "Saving Private Ryan" again.

Don't have anything new to add to this thread except to +1 all the sentiments already expressed.

My bachelor's degree is in history w/ a concentration in WWII... I've always, always wanted to go to a retirement home or VFW hall and just sit and listen to the vets' stories. Before no one's around to tell them anymore. :(

One of my biggest regrets in life was not getting my grandfather to tell his story. We were never very close & he never really talked to ANYONE... but now that he's gone, his story's never ever going to get told & that just makes me so sad for some reason. My grandmother died a few months ago & when my dad was cleaning out the house, he found a box of my grandfather's WWII stuff. I can piece together details from that, but it's still nothing compared to him recounting WWII from his own POV.
