So i have decided to get the Nikon D3000. I'm not sure though if i need the 55-200mm lens just yet but i don't want to pass up a good deal. How useful is the additional lens?

It's usually pretty useful to most people to have more options when it comes to focal length. It just depends on what you like to shoot and how good of a deal it is.

*Very* useful, but as mentioned it does depend a lot on your photographic style. A long lens is typically used to bring a subject closer (good for wild animals) but they can also be used to adjust the size relationship between subjects.

If you like the "telephoto look" (which comes from the relative subject distances and not the lens itself) then get this lens. If you want to take photos of wild animals (and don't want to spend a lot of $$$) then get this lens. On the other hand, if wide landscapes are your thing then this may not be the lens for you.

Let me also add to Bob's remarks that the 55-200 will be better at portraits than the 18-55 as you can use the 55-200 at 55mm with a wider aperture(F4) compared to F5.6 of the 18-55mm.
