With Christmas just around the corner I was thinking it might be time to add a new lens. I have the D40x, 18-55 and the nifty-fifty. I also have the SB-600. I am not pro and have no plans to go pro but I really enjoy learning about photography. I was wondering what lens I should add to my bag. I would like something that can take nice pics of my kids whether that be at home or special events like sports and Christmas programs etc. Also a lens that would be good for Disney! I am not sure if there a lens that can do all that. Plus I have auto focus issues with my D40x so not all lenses work with my camera.

So can anyone rec a good lens for
1) Disney (and other travel)
2) kid pics - events and such and also just to take nice pics of my kids

As I am new to this and still learning so I am not sure I understand what all the lenses do - I just like the way the pictures look! I love the bokeh my 50 gives me so maybe something that can zoom and also has the bokeh? Is there a lens that does both?

You might want to give the Nikkor 70- 300mm vr lens a look. It'll do everything you described and the bokeh is not too bad at all. Here's a link if you are at all interested.

Oh thanks! Ok, I was looking at the Tamaron version of that lens (cost factor) was wondering if this was a good choice.

I am in the process of upgrading to f/2.8 lenses. My first one is the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II LD SP ZL. It does have a built in focus motor so it will focus with the D40x. This lens is very sharp and I am very happy with it. It is much sharper than both my Nikkor 18-70mm and Nikkor 18-135mm.

You may also want to look at the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 AF-S. A bit wider than the 50mm, but it will auto focus with the D40x.

If your looking for something with longer reach, then I too recommend the Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR AF-S. Very sharp for its category. I've used it quite a bit for outdoor sports and also around Animal Kingdom. An excellent lens to be sure.

I have the Tamron 70-300 lens. I love the zoom. I have primarily used it for my kids' soccer games, and it is like I am right there - even when he is clear across the field. I took it with us to Disney and got some great pictures on the Safari. I know I used it other times during the trip, but don't recall where exactly right now.

I have a D40 & a D3000 I use the Tamron 18-270 as my walk around lens a WDW and love the pictures it takes
