It has been mentioned in several threads about leaving left over food behind for Mousekeeping. My brother lives in Orlando and films commercials, especially for Disney. He is also a huge advocate for the homeless. He was visiting us on our last day at OKW and I mentioned that we were leaving the food behind for Mousekeeping. He told me they are not allowed to keep it. He has approached Disney (and many other companies in Orlando). He has asked if it would be possible for the unopened, non-perishables to be gathered up and they (the area shelters) would come by daily and pick up the food. Disney has said NO! In all fairness, many other places have also said no. However, I guess there are a few condo's and hotels that do allow this. I think it is a great idea, especially if the housekeeping staff really isn't allowed to keep the food. I wonder why it couldn't be done. I know there is the whole liability thing. But if the package isn't opened, it isn't any bigger risk then buying it at the grocery store. It seems like a ton of food is being wasted.

I hate wasting the food, too. I think it's a liability issue. Even if it's unopened, they don't know where it's been stored or for how long. They'd also have to inspect every package.

I agree that it's not much different than a church holding a food drive where people bring it in from home. I imagine it's the risk of a lawsuit that has caused them to put in this restriction.

We celebrated DH birthday the day before we left BW for home and somhow had two birthday cakes. The whole place was clean except for the one cake which my mom said leave it for the mousekeeping's coffee brake, not wanting to fight & tell her that they weren't allowed I left it. We left earlier than check out so our keys were still active. No sooner did we go down stairs get the car and start loading that I realized I had left something. My DD & I ran back up walked in and there were tow maids sitting at the table having a "snack"! Boy they move fast!

I can understand why Disney wouldn't want to collect the unopened food. As was stated before, they would have no way of knowing if it has been properly stored or tampered with, etc. I suspect that, like the housekeepers who enjoyed the birthday cake, some of the food does get used by cast members. We took some of our unopened cans of soda to the recreation cast members at Hilton Head, and they accepted them with gratitude. Of course, we have no idea if they really used them, but they seemed to appreciate the effort. Maybe because we actually took the soda to them as opposed to just leaving it in the room made it acceptable.

We always leave extra food in the room at VB-unopened cereal boxes, 2 liters, etc.

When we are getting ready to check-out we always clean up and then leave anything out that we haven't opened.

I know housekeeping isn't allowed to take it, but they do and that is okay with us because at least it isn't going to waste.
We often buy things in the little store at the resort that we end up not using and I would hate to see it just end up in the trash.

If people throw it away because they think housekeeping cannot accept it then it does go to waste, so I would just leave any unopened food there and most likely they will take it.
