Leaving to Disney today and DH had Hernia operation yesterday!

I've had two hernia surgeries (and, yes, I'm a woman), and after my last one it took me at least a week before I could walk around without major pain. A DAY after the surgery, there's no way I could cough, let alone walk. So, even in a wheel chair, your DH might be uncomfortable, to say the least.

Now, having said that, my last surgery was 13 years ago and from what I've been reading on this thread it sounds like some wonderful progress has been made (what's this body glue you speak of?! ). I hope that's all true. . . I need to have another hernia surgery -- the third one in the same spot. My lower abdominal wall may be weak, but my spirit is strong! :thumbsup2

I hope you and your DH can figure out the best thing to do! Good luck!! :goodvibes

Thanks for all your advise guys. DH and I have come to a compromise. We are waiting until Thursday to see how he feels and to give him another day to recoup - if all looks good we will head out Thurs or Friday. Right now he is resting and seems to be doing well. He was up and about earlier this evening and said he was feeling better then yesterday so hopefully tomorrow will be an even better day.

OT that thermo bond/glue is amazing.....looks like they just painted it on his skin!

I can answer this question indirectly. Last year my Dad had a double hernia operation 12 days before we left with our 2 small children. We all still went because the doctor said he would be fine 3-5 days post surgery. Everyone I talked to said that that was the standard response and it is NOT accurate. That being said, my dad made it through our 6 days with many breaks, no lifting and a rest each afternoon. I would recommend, however, to ask the front desk of where you are staying to find a room as close to the elevators as possible. We changed our room on the 2nd day and it literally took miles off of our walking throughout the week. Good luck!

Eek! I had a hernia operation last summer and had trouble walking and moving around for about two days. Of course, I guess it depends on how fast of a healer your DH is...that really stinks that he had to get the operation the day before vacation! I hope he has a speedy recovery and if you DO go, tell him to take it easy.

My DH had hernia surgery 7 years ago when he was 28. The docs told us he would be up and around in 24 hrs. NO WAY DID THAT HAPPEN!!! He was in bed a week . If he was up for more than an hour, he suffered greatly during the night. I think your DH is being very unselfish, not wanting to disappoint the family, but I URGE YOU TO RECONSIDER FOR HIS SAKE. I promise you he is not ready to do this. And even if he does muddle thru it, for him it will not be the vacation it should be. He WILL be in pain. He will not be able to sleep well either which will add to his discomfort and slow his healing.

My dh had a hernia operation about 2-3yrs ago. He was told before the operation that he would need 4 weeks off work following. At his followup visit this was extended out to 6weeks...and then he had to go on light duties. He would never have survived WDW so soon.

Emmasmom - thanks for the suggestion - we rented a house off property and it has a garage so that's a plus....

I can't believe how the recovery period varies....my DH's doctor told him he would be ready to go back to work in 3 days and his hospital release form told him him his only restriction was to not lift anything over 30lbs for 6 hrs::eek: I feel like it's drive through surgery!

DH hasn't taken the pain Meds since yesterday morning(he hates medication -doesn't even like to take tylenol) and said he feels good (althought I don't expect that he would say otherwise!)

I think folks are missing a few points

not all hernia surgeries are equal, some are more complicated then others. Obviously, he had a more mild surgery, just based on the info from his doctor.
not all people will be in as much pain as someone else.
I had wisdom teeth out many years ago. I had pain meds..took exactly 2 pills and felt fine, so much so I was on a road trip a day after it. My mom had a fit because she felt SHE would be in terrible pain if it was her that had them out. I am not her and she is not me. I did fine and never had any problems
The very fact the man says he is ok, and is not even taking pain pills tells you he is feeling ok.
I really would stop worrying, you aren't him and unless he is prone to lying why not just accept the fact, he is not in some horrible pain and feels able to do things. Just do them at a slower pace and if he feels tired or something be ready to take a break.

You are right - not all hernia operations are the same and it does seem that his was a milder one......He was out and about today and was doing great....took some breaks when he needed but overall you couldn't even tell he just had a Hernia operation!

We decided to leave a little after midnight. I just finished packing the car and DH has been resting since about 7pm. We will just take it as slow as we need to.
:)

We are back! And had a fabulous time! DH was a trooper - We took our time and plenty of breaks. The first day it rained a bit but after that the weather was HOT HOT HOT with maybe 1 or 2 five min showers. Parks were slightly crowded through Labor day but not unmanageable....after that it was much less crowded.....I think this will be our new week to go from now on! I will do a TR on another thread - but if you have any question ask away!

glad things worked out ok for everyone!!

post a link to your tr when you get it posted.
love to read your adventure, especially since we leave in 9 days

Glad everything went fine for you guys.

I'm behind your DH 100%. DW and I are set to leavein just 50 hours and 10 minutes. We are taking our first trip to WDW without the kiddies, and we have been looking forward to this for months.

Well, I found myself in the ER last Sunday at about 4:30 AM with severe abdominal pain. Long story short, I need my gall bladder out. The surgeon told me to get it done ASAP and postpone Disney. HA!, says I. Load me up with some meds and I'll have the surgery when we get back.

Feeling better now, and surgery is scheduled for the day after we get back. Plus DW is an ER nurse so I know I'll have excellent care, and someone watching my every meal!

50 hours and 8 minutes...

I had hernia surgery on a Thursday, and by Sunday I was able to move away pretty well. If the pain meds are working its great. Walking was never an issue, it was sitting or bending over, so he'll be slow to sit, etc.

go and have fun.
