leaving career to work at Disney

I wasn't exactly going to apply for a minimum wage position. I mean this is why I started the thread people - I have no idea what is out there.

Does Disney just promote everyone from within ?
I doubt if anyone on this board knows. We would have to look at Cast member boards, look at listings of jobs etc

Pretty much. They can pay less that way.

DH worked in Burbank and then here in Orlando at corporate jobs. Now he works somewhere else for more money. And he's hired a bunch of those poor IT guys who just got shafted by the outsource.

It's really not the pixie dust people think it is.

Disney doesn't just promote from within but it is much harder to give someone advice about packing up the family and moving to Orlando if one does not know what type of job they would like.

Some Disney parks support jobs aren't even near the parks. Some are as far as Tallahassee and others are in California. Consumer products has locations everywhere, ABC is mostly NYC but there are local station support positions in almost every major city. ESPN is CT/NY. Marvel is in Queens but talks of moving it to LA. So when you say Disney what portion of Disney do you want to work for and do you want another desk job just at Disney which will be the same 9-5 grind or do you want a parks job which can be more like a 5-1 or 7-3 or any other combination of hours ranging from 4-14 hours shifts.

They don't promote everyone from within, but the majority definitely are. That way they're getting someone who understand the Disney way of doing things, which is often very different from other companies. My husband has a manager working underneath him right now who was brought in from outside, and both the manager and his reports have struggled with the fact that this guy just doesn't understand how Disney does certain things.

That won't be the case for everyone brought in from outside, some will be a huge asset, but if they can promote from within, they will.

To piggyback - is there anywhere to see what the pay scale is for the corporate, salaried jobs at Disney (as a company, not necessarily at WDW)?

There is a job within the company that mirrors what I do now and I am just curious as to what they pay vs what I get paid...

Thanks!

No way to know but check glassdoor.com You can search there if you are a member and see what people have reported as their salary range. Membership is free but you have to leave a review or something to open all of it.

Thanks @wilkeliza :) That kind of stinks - I like seeing job postings with the actual salaries offered...or at the very least, the range.

Generally Disney titles are a grade below what they would be elsewhere. Supervisors at Disney would be managers elsewhere. If you are a director now, Disney would hire you as a manager, and so on. The pay would be equal to that level, but it's a job you'd be a higher level and higher salary range at another company.

I would just look into moving my firm to the Orlando area. However, it sounds like you might want to change jobs. Maybe start a part time business as a travel agent for Disney and perhaps it could grow to be successful enough for you to quit your current job?

OK, well it might have helped all of us to know that if you had asked about transitioning a career into one for the Disney company, asked where to look to find job postings for corporate level work, etc
The way you said you would move to Florida and then apply for jobs made it sound like you were planning to quit and then go near the parks and hope to find work (heck not all corporate positions are even there, I don't think) and this "anyone have any experience in leaving a career to work for Disney?" made it sound like you were planning on leaving your type of work all together (to me anyway).

So, in that light, can I ask WHY DISNEY?
You would not be working in the parks or resorts then--so what is it about the company that you think would make them a good employer for you?
Is your main goal to live near the parks? If so, perhaps you can expand your search to look at other companies who might employee you in the Orlando area.
If there is something special about how Disney treats employees which appeals to you, can you both apply to Disney but also research other companies with similar corporate cultures?

etc

ok op. everyone is trying to give you advice and it is all just bogus. get off your butt right now. and make it happen. keep us informed. and if you do it, I will personally haul myself to Orlando and buy you a drink. now get er done.

I have to wonder how someone who has worked his way up in investment brokering to owning his own firm doesn't know how to look for a job.

None of your prior posts (or threads) hinted at a career transfer, only a career change. Do you even know what you want? Do you want ( since you now say you aren't interested in an entry level park job) some kind of executive level position? Where? WDW parks? Disney HQ in California? Somewhere else? Have you even looked at the Disney Careers website? Considered checking out executive employment agencies? What type of job do you think you are qualified for?

Keep your job & vacation more at Disney rather than work for them and vacation with them less!!!

A job is a job and I imagine that like anything they all have their days. Do yourself a favor and become a passholder could be your happy medium. pixiedust:

We are in our 40s and we moved our family from the Midwest to SE Florida last year. We did it not to work at Disney, but to enjoy the warmer weather, be closer to the beach and also be closer to WDW. For us the realization came that you only do have one life and it is what you make of it. I hate to be cold and no longer wanted to live where I would have to drive on ice to get to work. When we made the decision to move, I looked for a transfer with my job and it took about 5 months until one was available and about 8 months from the decision to move. Then even after moving, it took 7 months to sell our house so we were carrying the costs of two homes during that time. The first year was very stressful but definitely worth it. We are 15 minutes from beach and about 2 hours away from Orlando, our weekends usually include one of those options with the beach being the more frequent choice. We have Disney APs this year and try to go at least one day a month with a few extended trips a year. Rather than renew though, we will get APs for Universal next year and throw in a few small WDW trips with Fl. Resident passes. We are planning to alternate every year between the two. The cost of living here is affordable, there are no state income taxes and property taxes are much lower than where we moved from. So it may be a mid life crisis but we did make a major life change and are really happy we did it, it just took some planning and some stressful transition time.
Good luck on your journey

I find it a little hard to take at face value what the OP's career background currently is based on this and the prior threads mentioned. Someone who is in investments and finance would already know how to answer their own questions about whether a job change like this would be wise, and a business owner would be a self starter that would already have gone straight to the source for answers - not solicit a message board.

Plus people are putting a lot of thought and energy into responding, and the OP hasn't really thrown much of a bone into communicating back. Why was this thread highlighted on a Facebook posting from DIS? (Which is what brought me to it)...

That was the only thing that threw me also. My financial planner and another friend who works in banking are ridiculously detail oriented, lol to the point where I want to hit 'em in the head with a book. they would have specific questions about the 50 thousand obstacles they may encounter.

My husband knows someone who quit a decent paying job to go sell shaved ice in Hawaii. He was back in town looking for another job within a year since he didn't make enough money to live on. He still hasn't found a job that pays as much as his old one and is struggling financially.

I believe you would have that problem too working at Disney unless you were independently wealthy.

anyone have any experience in leaving a career to work for Disney? My wife thinks I'm crazy. I am a 46 year old investment broker with my own firm. Been thinking a lot lately about eventually moving to WDW and seeking employment in the next few years. If so, let me know what your experiences were. have no idea what level of employment would be available, how much of a pay cut I would have, etc etc ... what is out there ? thanks !

You wont be able to go to any more games in Tiger Stadium.
