Le Cellier - Excellent!!!!!

...this topic has always puzzled me - I'm right there with Zippidy from Buffalo -absolutely no comparison in beef quality between the two countries -the US is far superior in my opinion...I've come to the conclusion that Cdn taste buds must be somehow different in order to think otherwise.

I'm a very well travelled (both US & Canada - 100+ nights/year) business guy and here are some anecdotal comments -

* restaurant quality of course varies from restaurant to restaurant - considering for the most part the high-end places here (you never know what you may get at a roadhouse or diner)

* for those who think Le Cellier has the best beef in WDW - I would urge you to try Shula's in the Dolphin or Swan (you'll change your mind!)

* best and most popular steakhouses in Toronto are without a doubt - Mortons of Chicago (US chain), Ruth's Chris (US chain) and Harbor House 60 (or similiar) - a local place but uses US beef - in fact, all three of these place advertise heavily that they use US Prime Grade A Beef (the top 1% of cuts)
One visit here and chances are, you'll change your mind about US beef.

* when dining at some places in Canada that are purported to have "great steaks" ...i.e. Bumpers in Banff, the Hy's chain, Gibbys in Montreal - all have met with tremendous dissappointment with me, despite very high hopes for these places to satisfy (and I could tell after the first bite!)

* when taking Cdn sales reps (30 of them) out to dinner in Palm Springs, there was universal raves about the prime rib served at The Chart House on Rt 111 - and I mean comments that were so positive they clearly indicated nothing of that caliber had been consumed before by this large group!

* like Zippidy, I'll pay homage to what is done very well in Canada - butter tarts, Coffee Crisp and Aero candy bars (which I ship in regularly for my New Jersey co-workers), and beer - but I can't endorse steaks (and generally restaurant food quality) compared to America's!

* by the way, if you're in Ontario and find yourselves in Buffal (Zippidy's home base) ...I would urge you to try Fanny's Restaurant in Amherst - the complimentary cheese bread (loaded with cheese, butter, garlic etc...) is a good example of things that I can't seem to encounter in Canada - it's so good you could make a meal out of it! Not something you want to eat every day, but part of the splurge experience that should be part of dining out!!

Jersey Shark

I have eaten at Shulas and I wasn't impressed and I only eat my steaks rare even dissapointed in the Yachtsman at the Yacht club very rubbery bland cuts of beef. Come and try the Keg in London it will change your mind I don't mind the outback but find they use far to much seasoning and you never get teh true taste of the beef just the spices and salt. actually I was doing some research on teh grades of beef for Canada and the US and they are apparently using the same grading systems so anything in the US graded as grade A would get the same in Canada and vice versa.

...saying you like a place like the Keg (stunningly mediocre steaks -clearly mid-tier at best) and at the same time that you didn't like Shula's is a completely incongruent argument based on the quality of meat that they serve.

...as far as the "grading" of beef goes - nothing beats "USDA prime" - THAT's what you want to look for and in Toronto - you'll find it at Mortons, Ruth's Chris, and the HarborHouse 60 (so even the top steakhouses in Canada keep to that rating).

...for interested readers, in todays Wall St Journal Weekend edition, there's a good article that discusses all of this.

Have you eaten at the Keg in London? Just curious because if you had you would see they aren't the run of the mill Keg I have eaten at other Keg's and they weren't nearly as good. As for Shulas I just didn't care for it and all I can chock it up to is what our tastes are Americans prefer US beef Canadians prefer Canadian beef. Nothing wrong with that really just the way things go.

Hi CharlesTD,

It is NOT the debate re the beef, I personally don't care either way as I do not eat red meat. I took offense to Zip-A-Dee-Dude-Da and what he wrote

Do you not find this offensive and excessive a comment for a debate that started regarding the quality of beef?

I don't think this type of talk is appropriate for a disney oriented website.

I feel that most people on this site discuss the "Magic of Disney" and that the above comment by Zip-A-Dee-Dude-Da was unecessary and threatening.

Carol I also took offense to Zippp..whatever's comment. He obviously was not having a Disney day.

As for all food in the states I can honestly say there isn't one thing that I really enjoy - from steaks to chicken wings. I go to Disney for the entertainment not great food.

Don't even get me started on the butter :confused3

It's just a question of different tastes and shouldn't become a case of "beef envy". My beef is better than your beef is a ridiculous debate to be drawn into. I do believe that Canadians have different tastes than Americans and there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Look at Coca Cola...I'm so used to the Coke here that when I go to the States, I absolutely hate it there.

I've eaten some pretty good steak in a pretty good chophouse in Chicago and an amazing place in San Diego but the best steak I ever had was in Ottawa in the restaurant under the National Arts Centre.

As for Zip's comments about blowing us up...it seemed like a comment made by somebody who didn't know what to say when confronted with information that conflicted his. Sort of like, "Oh yeah? Says you!" comment you see on playgrounds. I didn't find it threatening but did find his reaction mildly amusing.

You are perfectly correct in assuming I wrote this because I had lost an aguement and didnt have anything else to write. It was my way of saying you win. I had nothing left to add.

But I will add that people with no sense of humor sadden me. Being as I have spent as much of my life in Canada as the US I know Canadians find Americans to be War Mongers and was playing up that stereotype.

If you took offense to this Im sorry, sorry that life has taken humor away from you. Heck I even wrote "WITH TOUNGE FIRMLY PLANTED IN CHEEK" at the end because I knew some MORALITY POLICE would take offense. Get over it, it was just an attempt at humor.

Actually I didn't take offence to it we are all adults here well for the most part but I am sure my DW would argue the fact in my case saying I am ust a 15 year old boy in a grown ups body LOL. I have no problem with people expressing opinions even of that nature on this site and actually I agree with his comment about the talent from the US it is sub par.

I agree with the americans on this one, if I want a good steak here in Montreal, I go to a place that serves american USDA Grade A Beef and if they use it, they put it well in evidence!

Le Cellier was yucky when I had dinner there. It was too rushed, the cheese soup was nothing special and the filet mignon just bad. It was before they switched to american beef due to mad cow disease.

Yachtsman and Shula's are the real 2 stars for a good steak at WDW. Le Cellier is a normal restaurant pretending its a steakhouse (may be true... after all, it was a cafeteria to start with!).

We ate twice at Le Cellier last week. Food was great both times, but service was slow. On Tuesday, the server was nice, but Thursday's server was terrible.

Hey Everyone...

Not sure that I want to get involved in this thread for fear of having to defend Le Cellier, but I am indeed here in WDW and working in Le Cellier. Actually, I've been outside working in the Canada kiosk for the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival. Today was my last day doing that and now I'm off for the next 4 days and then I start training as a server in Le Cellier. So, if anyone is down, don't hesitate to say hello.

Sandra :)

Hi Everyone;

I've been going through the posts, a little bit, a am glad to see other Canadians on this site. A little back ground on us, hubby is with the Canadian Army and we are posted to Colorado Springs. Let me tell you, when I get home to visit I have a nice Canadian BBQ'ed rib eye steak, some KFC and Tim Horton's (even though the donuts have declined since we left Canada) I also pick up all the Salmon (canned) I can carry home, chocolate bars and Oreos and Fudgies I can stand to walk around with. The steak here in the US has a much different taste, a lot of that is the steroids they use in their meat. I respect everyone's thoughts though and I just like Canadian meat more, that might be an issue that you prefer what you were raised with though.
Anyway, we are heading to WDW in the beginning of December and are cruising on DCL on December 10th. Has anyone heard of Canadians having to surrender their passports on ship? I've seen info on having to present it but nothing on surrendering it, however, some other people have written that Disney keeps your Passports for the whole cruise. Anyone have info on that?

Thanks for the help;

Sandra;

We will definately ask for you when we get there early December, if you plan on being there that long. I can't wait to try Le Cellier.

have a great day all,

Sandra,
Will you be there the week of December 19th? We've got dinner ressies for the 19th!

This is kinda cool...(meeting people in person as opposed to virtually).

:sunny:

How far in advance do you have to make reservations? Should I have made them already for the first week in December? How do you do that?

AAhhhh, there's so much planning to put into this trip. :)

Early December is still pretty light in terms of crowds but as somebody said in another thread, it looks like more and more people are realizing that December in the parks is the thing to do.

To make a ressie (or ADR = Advanced Dinner Reservation), you need to call the WDW Dining phone line. 407-WDW-DINE (939-3463)

http://allearsnet.com/din/dining.htm has lots of info you can look at.

I'd make a reservation so i wouldn't be disappointed if there was a restaurant I wanted to try but had to wait really long to get into or worse, not able to try it.
