I have ALWAYS paid for my entire balance of my room in full prior to arrival and have often "over-paid". I have done it when my trip is two weeks or two years away and it hasn't seemed to make any difference.
When you say that you talked to Disney travel do you mean that you called 407-WDISNEY or that you talked to a local travel agent that sells Disney packages. If the latter is true, I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't know you could do this. If the former is true, I'm surprised that Disney is turning away your money!
I would say that you could call them back and make sure that you explain what it is that you desire to do clearly. I have never done this over the phone. I have always sent a check with a note clearly identifying my name, reservation number, hotel, and dates of travel. Like I said, never a problem.
But I have always booked only the room and never a travel package, I just can't imagine that the rules are different though.
I agree with you all that it helps make the trip more fun to anticipate when I am making regular payments towards it. I have so many regular payments to make that don't bring me pleasure, it's fun to have one that does!
