Laundry detergent/softener help

the Gain version of the downy unstopables are my favorite... they smell soooooo good!!

I use Downey for the liquid, if I need to use dryer sheets I will use Bounce. But I always wash in HOT water to help get bad smells out.

I was coming to say this. I always wash my towels in hot water and I switch them to the dryer immediately. I use Tide w/ Downy and a Bounce dryer sheet. They smell so good when they come out, and the scent seems to last.

I tried to post this last night...

We are staying at MIL's house temporarily right now (have been since end January-and the reason keeps changing, LOL but that's another story...)

Well, she has that awful sulfur water. I just don't feel the clothes smell all that great when they come out. She as a rule usually doesn't use dryer sheets but when I do our wash I have been using them just to help somewhat.

Well I found a bag in her cabinet with those Purex 3 in 1 sheets (they have the detergent and softener in them) and on a whim I tried one. Wow! It's the only thing that has made the laundry smell good and fresh and get rid of that weird smell that I think is from that awful sulfur water! I have tried to use them whenever possible.

I haven't minded staying with her (she is great, not like the stereotypical horrible MIL's ) but can't wait to go home and have regular water to shower and wash clothes in. :laundy:

Why nit find a dryer sheet scent you like and throw a couple of the sheets into every drawer and in your linen closet and such so that your clothes absrob the smell afterwards?

My mother used to put bars of soap into our drawers and our clothes always smeeled nice. Just pick something fragrant.

My laundry cocktail:

I use Kirkland (Costco) liquid detergent
1 cup of white vinegar
Softel (again Costco) fabric softener. I use this combo for everything including towels. When I add the softener to the dispenser I also add 1 equal part white vinegar and then the rest is water.

I wash everything in cool water - except bra's which I soak in hot to remove deodorant stains etc.

For all clothes/linens I also use a dryer sheet, Costco brand. I don't use the dryer sheets for towels and I don't use fabric softener on any of the UnderArmour items we have.

White vinegar has become my laundry staple. I discovered it when DS was in high school and I was dealing with the boy funk sweat smell from all his athletics. It also helps darks retain their colors

I have noticed the tags on our Under Armour say not to use fabric softener.....do you or anyone else know why this is? TIA!

I believe it has to do with the fabric composition and the way it "breathes" it is my understanding that for lack of a better way to explain it, the fabric softener clogs up the pores of the manmade fabric that UnderArmour is made out of.

First, we started using the Walmart brand of detergent for HE (Citrus scent) and it's 1/2 the cost of brands and seems to work as well.

We use the Downey unstoppables.... (youtube the commercials, they're great) and I think they work well.

Finally, we clean the washing machine (we use the Tude machine cleaner, but you can make it on your own) and it seems to really help.
