Laundry/detergent Q

We also packed tide pods. We estimated how many loads we thought we would do, then added a couple extra pods in a ziploc.

FWIW: One tip I learned, and keep using, is to put detergent on some facecloths, zip those up in a baggie and toss one of detergent loaded facecloths in the machine. No fuss, no muss and no worrying about pods bursting. The machines are so small on the boats I find pods are a little overkill. :)

Can you buy laundry detergent on the ship?
Yes.

I usually buy a box of (powdered) laundry soap from my local dollar store. It only costs a dollar and I can do upwards of 5-6 loads with it. Much more economical than buying the individual boxes for a dollar each. Of course, we do more laundry than most, since we tend to take long cruises.

Thanks everyone. Im bringing some with me but was curious in case I end up doing more laundry than anticipated!

We always do laundry on board, usually more than once.

I cant use the detergent that is sold on board (allergies), so we bring our own (previously All Free & Clear Small and Mighty, now Sunlight Sensitive 2x concentrated). Our first cruise we brought pods, but it took 4 entire cycles to get all the suds out (at $2 a cycle... and we had more than one load to do) -- way too much detergent for those little washers.

We now use a small leakproof Nalgene bottle (250 mL or 500 mL) and fill it with liquid detergent. I have a small dual 1 tsp/1tbsp measuring spoon that I use to measure the 1 tsp of detergent that is actually needed; I just drop it in the Ziploc bag that the detergent is in in case of leaks. In the laundry rooms there is a tiny sink I use to rinse the measuring spoon after each use (less mess). This detergent also comes in handy for washing something quickly in the room.

We also bring what we use at home (although we don't use the Pods at home) due to my son's reaction to other detergents. We buy a small pack of the pods and put them in a small rubbermaid container so they don't get squished or leak and then just bring our own dryer sheets and put in ziplock bag. I'm glad I did bring ours last summer on the 11 night cruise as they sold out several times on the dryer sheets I think (might have been detergent but think it was the sheets). I love the poster above who said they put detergent on a washcloth then put in a ziplock bag and then throw that in the washing machine - very interesting :)

The detergent in a washcloth sounds interesting but I worry about security at the airport. We're flying overseas, so we can't bring anything liquid. I don't want to trigger some security alert because they think we're doing something wrong!

Whoa! - I never thought of that! Those washers are pretty tiny!

Can the pods be cut open?

I'm surprised that the machines are small. Anyone have any comparison? Are they like apartment machines, and not like the newer HE large load machines?

We didn't think the machines were tiny (?) and had no issues with the Tide Pods we brought and I'd say we did at least three loads. We brought our Tide Pods with us overseas in our checked luggage and no issues at all.

Well, the pods could be cut, but then you have a bit of a mess until you use the other part.

I'd say they are more a size between small and large. Kinda what washers "used to be".

Don't know if it'll help, but:

If you are using the laundry soap on the washcloth, let it dry out a few days before you pack it. The soap will still be in the washcloth, but it will not be liquid.

:offtopic: A related hack that I learned here:DDo the same thing with dish washing soap on a piece of sponge or a folded paper towel. let it dry and cut up. Use it to wash out cups, etc.
