Laundry detergent for excema

DD and grandma has it. we avoid all tide like the plague! if you clothes react to blacklight simply because you used tide... well I stopped using tide after that. :confused3

We use purex. it is cheap, works, and no one reacts to it. However, i agree with bringing just enough to use on the trip. last thing you want to do is have a reaction on vacation! also see about bringing a steroid cream with just in case something else causes a reaction (like the sheets in the hotel room!)

Thanks for your advice everyone he has steroid cream and moisturising cream that will take up its own suitcase. :headache: I will bring a small amount of detergent with me and get some and if he reacts to the stuff I have bought on Garden Grocer I will just wash his stuff in our powder from home.

For my now teen son, tide free is the only one that worked. What really helped him was eliminating some allergens from his diet. We discovered red dye40 was a trigger for his excema. Goodbye Gatorade.

DS7 has eczema and Purex free and clear is the only thing that works for him.

The only kind we use here is the All Free & Clear too. I tried another free & clear brand before, but broke out.

Tide Free and Clear works well for DD. But I agree with PP that you might want to bring along some (or pack enough not to do his laundry). We have found that some sensitive skin products really bother her and haven't figured out why some are fine and some aren't. :( I wouldn't want a flare-up at WDW.

bringing from home for his clothes may not be enough. i have reacted to what the sheets in room were washed in. i have problems with scents. no control over resort laundry. keep this in mind also.

we can only use the free and clear stuff here. I actually hate deft because of the smell and it made DS eczema way worse. My mom and mil would buy it to wash his clothes because it was a baby detergent. I finally had to tell them, not to bother washing his clothes if they were going to use it because I had to rewash it. Once everyone started using the free and clear ones, he has been fine!!

Thanks everyone.
Never really though about detergent making a reaction.
Currently using Ultra Purex Mountain Breeze detergent and Final Touch ultra spring fresh fabric softner.
Will be trying the ALL free and clear and wash her clothes seperately until I use up what detergent I currently have.

DD gets it really bad at the creases of her arms at the elbow and armpits and behind her knees.
Seems to happen during the fall and spring the worse and milder during the middle of winter.
Would make sense since instead of shorts and tshirts she is now in long sleeves and pants.
Being in the sun and pool seems to clear it up quickly ( maybe DH will agree to moving someplace warm all year :rotfl:)
Dr has us using a cream $50 a tube  high deductible insurance
I had it really bad on my hands/fingers when I was little. Would itch them raw at times. Thankfully I outgrew it and hope this is the case with DD.

Keep the suggested coming everyone!!

The chlorine in the pool might be helping it clear in the summer. My ped gave me the suggestion of doing mild bleach baths with my ds. Apparently, it's an old fashioned remedy that's making a comeback. We also try to avoid his eczema food triggers: tomato, oranges, strawberries.

Purex has a Free and Clear as does All.

I use both of these.

I also use Downey Free as my fabric softner.

Free and Clear detergents don't work well for my DS because of the brighteners.

We use Rockin' Green. It's amazing. We use it for clothes, diapers (when he's in cloth), dishwasher, among other things. Check it out. Just google Rockin' Green detergent.

Thanks everyone.

The chlorine can help eczema in some people. My dermatologist told me that it could help but with me, being in the actually makes it worse.

Fall and spring are the prime allergy seasons. Does she have allergies as well because those could be triggering it.

I have allergies (food, chemical and environmental) and eczema and it flares when my environmental allergies are at their worst (fall and spring) or if I eat something I am allergic to.

I react to the detergant at any hotel. I travel with a set of sheets, a blanket, a pillowcase and towels as well as my own shampoo, conditioner, soap, etc. I despise travelling now.

Actually, if the OP contacts guest services, she can request the sheets be washed in a less aggressive detergent - can't remember the name of the service, check the disAbilities forum for more info!

VIP cleaning service.

We did this once...it really depends on the person and severity of allergies if this is worth it.

For me, I still reacted to whatever they used. By day two, I had a full blown eczema flare up/allergic reaction and ended up in the ER on a IV of solumedrol. Also, the room smelled so strongly of bleach or whatever they use to do the deep cleaning that we had to let the room air out before I could be in there because it was bothering my asthma.

So yes, it is definitely an option but I would make sure to have a back up plan just in case.

Thank you everyone for your advice,

I am in two minds on whether the detergent actually affects his excema but would rather have something that others find good for there excema seeing I have to buy the powder anyway.

We are offsite in a house so thank you to the person who suggested the clean but that won't apply.

I am hoping the warm weather and sun will help a bit. He doesn't have the typical excema in the creases etc. His hands and feet are covered in tiny little bubble things and he just scratches them raw, and they are all cracked. As I type he is sitting beside me with his hands and feet slathered in cream and then socks on them, which were put on during the night.

They are always worst this time of year with it being Spring and all.

Once again thank you I have ordered some All Free and Clear with my delivery.

Kirsten

I also do an extra rinse with every load. Will you have a washer in your unit? If so, after the cycle runs, reset it for an extra rinse. It really helps to get all the additives out.

Cerave cream (in the big tub, not a tube) worked wonders for my ds' eczema. Almost like magic, in only a few days. Up then I had tried everything else over the counter. Good luck!

Started using last night. Hoping for the same results.

We also use All Free & Clear. 2 of my kids have issues with eczema and this is really the best thing we have found to use. Also we were told by the Pediatrician to not use fabric softener or dryer sheets of any kind as they will aggravate the eczema as well.

Also be sure to rinse off well after going in the pool. The chlorine in the pool can aggravate eczema as well.

Dreft is full of fragrance is was not good for my son's eczema.

You aren't kidding! That stuff is awful. It's marketed to parents with young babies, but it's very harsh. I bought one bottle, washed all of my daughter's infant clothing in it, then had to re-wash all of her clothing after I saw how strongly scented and dyed the detergent was. Never bought another bottle!

We use All Free and Clear for DD5's eczema. Works well for us!

We use Tide Free, but we have used All Free & Clear before, we just can't get it anymore at our local grocer. Our excema (DD and DH) is triggered by food, so it only flares up when we mess up and give them that food.
