Last minute flight deals? Standby?

My stepdad has to start chemo week after next...and next week he's getting his feeding bag put in, so will be in the hospital for 3 days with that. I'm trying to find a way to go see him next week before chemo, and to kinda help my mom sort through things.. I'll only get a long weekend from work..
but does anyone know of a way to fly standby or get cheaper tickets on such a quick purchase??
Most things I see are at least $600.
It is from Atlanta to Sacramento.

You can check on travelocity.com for "last minute deals" as they may have something there.

Expedia has an option where you can check surrounding airports and sometimes you can save a couple hundred dollars flying into a different airports.

That is where I usually will look. What is hard as I think that is a fairly uncommon route, so you don't have a ton of choices and I'm not sure how much cheaper it gets... The lowest fares I saw at a quick glance was in the $600 range. If you can plan to visit the following week you can save another hundred or so.

Call the airlines and tell them the situation.If you get a nice cust service rep, they might give you a better rate. They have special rates for funerals & medical emergencies. They would also know of any other special deals. Call, be nice & tell the truth, it might help!
